Food arts by kids - lots of silly pictures

Little man's girlfriend's grandma died suddenly. I have the girl for today so her parents can take care of business. Picked them up at school around lunch time. These two belong to the anti-veggie gang so I had to pick my brain to get them eat a little bit of the good stuff. Came up with the idea of food arts. Gave them each a pesto garlic tortilla spread with cream cheese and mayo, help them cut out some ham, cheese, nori, and vegetables. By the end of lunch, the girl ate a lot more veggies than the boy. Their artwork, wow, very very different!

Little girl's artwork:

Her lunch has yam (the cat), red pepper, carrot, spinach, & broccoli.

Little man's artwork:

The only fresh vegetable on little man's lunch was that one spinach eyeball and the hat. Well, he did eat a lot of nori. LOL

Now I just have to come up with a dinner that both of them will eat. :-)

Sorry, David, it's hard to take a picture of myself, LOL, and I was so busy in the kitchen I didn't even think to take a picture of Mother! Gina, that is indeed a "spray on" tan. You know she didn't get that tan in Michigan in May, it's 51F and raining right now, not much beach time. :-) RR, it was a bit crazy but it all came together in the end, although I only got out of the kitchen long enough to watch the cake cutting, the bouquet and garter toss and I had ONE dance with the groom. Other than that, it was all cooking, serving and cleaning up. Ah well, it kept me out of trouble and it was Ashley's party, not mine. She was happy, so it's all good! David, I do have a long weekend and I think maybe I'll make Elery take me out for dinner for my birthday. I'm sure not baking a cake... Oh, and for those who wanted a picture of Bruvver, before he ate cake and lasagna and had punch and ate too much candy from the candy buffet and threw up, while his shirt was still white, here's Bruvver: Annie Annie

Amazing stuff isn't it? I've been following the ice festival for years after a friend, who lived near Harbin on Sakhalin, a small island off the coast of Russia, went there a couple of times. So, in these pictures I'm seeing three possible paths to KTWLS. First, kitchens that are explicitly and authentically ''period''. In 2010 and 2030 alike, a vintage 1920's period kitchen will look like a vintage 1920's period kitchen. It hasn't been ''in style'' for 90 years, it isn't pretending to be in style, and it can no more go out of style than the historical waxwork dioramas in the Museum of Natural History. Second, kitchens that are well-executed eclecticism. It isn't of a specific era, doesn't have a specific look, is a collection of disparate elements which are each appealing and go together harmoniously. Even as one of those elements becomes over-exposed and then shades into silly, it's just one risible piece in a still-graceful whole. Third, and I suspect this will be controversial, kitchens that are very, very avant-garde. Tastes change slowly. Furniture of the ''Le Courbusier'', Mies Van De Rohr, Marcel Breuer sort - ''modernist'' if you will - that was so stylish in the 1950s and 1960s, was actually created in the 1920s and 1930s. It took decades for the Wassily chair to go from ultra-modern to mainstream. A very perceptive student of cutting-edge modern design might be able to shoot ahead of the bird, as they say, and build a kitchen that might actually look less silly in 20 years than it does today. Maybe. I wouldn't be able to do it. Well, I can see a final approach, which I think would work in theory for a very few people. Simply transplant a commercial kitchen, or as close as you can, into the house. I think a restaurant kitchen in 2030 will look much like a restaurant kitchen today, save perhaps for more induction, because they are designed for function, not fashion. You'll have a kitchen that is equally institutional and graceless in 20 years as today. I really like seeing the pictures. I hope they keep coming. I'm getting some ideas.

I'll ask DH to pick up some "Cackle Berries and Moo Juice" once in a while. I love the "white wash" name for skim milk, especially since that's what I have to drink. I make a lot of one-pot dinners, too. I've taken to making "Chicken Stuff." I'll take left-over roasted chicken, add celery, onions, carrots, and anything else that's in the fridge and cook until the veggies are done. Plop it on some brown rice and call it dinner. I've made it several times; each time it's different. I don't eat meat like I use to. I'm not a vegetarian as such, but I seem to have lost my taste for most meats. So, I tell Wes I'm making "roasted beast" or cooking a "hunk of dead animal" for dinner. Doesn't seem to bother his appetite. I think Macaroni Screw-Up will be on our table soon!

I was just thinking the same thing, rachelellen, funny she made the pig out of ham, LOL.

Be careful your guy doesn't get too much spinach. (grin) Makayla's wouldn't even have that much spinach on it!

Thanks everyone! They did have fun playing and eating at the same time. The ham was my idea because there was no "meat" on the tortilla. Then they took my idea and ran with it. They didn't like spinach at all. I added the spinach eyeball on and the two of them went "Oh no! The evil spinach!" But both of them ate everything including the spinach! We had fun.

Now someone tell me that there is really no "basic" difference between boys and girls! LOL

You can't generalize about boys and girls from a single sample, but I do think that the boy's art show much more artistic expression and talent than the girl's. Check them out again ten years later and see what they will be doing then. As a designer, I am much more drawn to the boy's expression than the girl's, but then I am also much more appreciative of abstract art. The girl's expression looks folksy and primitive, whereas the boy's art is much more daring and original. I would say that the boy is more of an artist than the girl, whom I would describe more as a decorator than an artist. Individual differences are much more important than one's sex IMO.
