It appears that my family was very concrete when it came to naming food. I did note later on that my mom never got the praise she deserved for giving us the expected meal as part of her duties.

And one more with the story behind it: Samples
When I was a real little child and would go to the grocery
store with my parents, at the end of the first isle was a
woman giving out samples of fried polish sausage (on a tooth pick).
I liked them so much, my Mom bought some and sliced them up
just like they were at the store and fried them. We had
them for dinner and I called them samples. The name stuck.
Now 40 years later we sometimes still have "samples" for dinner.
Usually with mac+cheese and vegetables.
That's how diced polish sausage fried came to be known as samples.

Wow those are bizarre!! LOL I never thought of calling anything other than what it is....especially writing them on a list! I would be holding my list firmly in hand, so it didn't get picked up by a fellow shopper. :)

I used to do day care and had a little girl with a speech issue. She called ketchup "chenchump" and popsicles
"popsarahs". My whole family still references those names and the little girl is now 18 years old! :)

No fancy names for food but sometimes I'm the only one that can understand my grocery list. One time I sent DH to the store for me and I had 2 artichokes on the list. I meant 2 cans and he came home with two fresh artichokes. I couldn't really blame him but I could hardly use two fresh artichokes in the appetizer I was making. I knew what I wanted but how was he suppose to. So I'm very careful when I send him grocery shopping for me. I spell everything out very carefully.....and if I want 3 lemons, I put down six. I'll get 3!

No cutsie names for food or inanimate objects - except I do call DH's Skin milk "White water".

DH loves Watergate Salad, but because of its green color, he calls it "green slime". I make a dish that's like enchiladas, covered with chili - DH calls it "chili slop" (it's one of his favorite meals). He has gotten family members to call them by these names also.

I use the real names for food items, but my dad called eggs "cackle berries" and that cracked me up.

growing up we had "pig peters" which was Polish sausage.

As a toddler I said pasghetti instead of spaghetti, which was amusing, so we still call it that.

Can't think of any others right now, but the ones you all have shared are pretty funny.

I make the small individual meat loaves and my FSIL called them "Meat Wads", so meat wads they are to all of us now!

No, no silly names for food. We just call it what it is.

The GREEN stuff: used to call creamed spinach, so GS wouldn't know what it was. Later he told me, I always knew it was spinach grandmother :o) He loves my creamed spinach.

granddaughter used to call blueberries booberries so that's what we call them ...

I'm the queen of simple, one-pot meals, so we have several varieties of 'Glop'. One is pepper steak. One is shrimp and ham jambalaya. One is beef stroganoff. (You get the picture.)

We like 'abacados' -- DS's pronounciation, age three. (We still use 'binkers' to water the lawn too.)

I don't buy any 'Duck Bread' -- cheap, soft, nutrition-free white bread good only for feeding ducks (and not even good for the ducks).

When I was really little kid (maybe 3) I started calling pretzel rods (at that time sold in candy stores for a penny)"Wee Bows". The name has stuck in my family. I also call frozen fish "Fish Ticks."

One time when I was in high school I came home from school and my mother was sitting in the dining room visiting with my aunt..Mother says, "Richard, why don't you start something for supper?"

When I asked what she said, boil up some macaroni and we'll go from there...

When the macaroni was done I asked her what she wanted me to do with it...

Mother says,"Put it in a baking dish with some milk and cheese", meaing of course that we would have macaroni and cheese, however at the same time my aunt hollers,
Put some tomatoes in it, (she was thinking in the order of chili mac...)

So I did as instructed,,,I put the macaroni in a baking dish and poured in a quart of home canned stewed tomatoes, then I added a bit of milk to cover the macaroni, stirred it well and added a layer of velveta cheese. I then sprinkled it with some Italian seasoning and tossed it in the oven...

Thirty minutes later when I took it out of the oven it looked like macaroni with a pizza on top but when I brought it to the table both my mother and my aunt had a fit..."OMG,,you can't put tomatoes, milk and cheese in the same dish!!!"

Dad says..."I'm hungry and it looks good to me, so lets eat it anyway."

After that about once a week dad would holler at me,,"Richard, how about you go make your macaroni screw up for supper" and to this day I still make it occassionally, and I still call it the "Macaroni Screwup", and nearly everybody I have ever served it to say its different, but they like it.

I didn't think I had any silly names for food, but the other day I found myself telling my cat (I know, I know) that I was going to make myself an "ambigger", the name DD#2 calleld hamburgers.

Well, there is "roast beast" with "bashed topatoes".
And at our table there is, to this day, a little verse that must be sung when asking for the cheese. It is a remembered little ditty from a record (Title 'The Silly Record') that our kids played a gazillion times when preschool age. Drove us nuts!
It goes like this;
Cheese please, Louise
Thank you very, very mush
Your willy wally, wolly welcome

Years ago we watched Eddie Murphys 'Delierious' comedy act.
In it, he talks about as a child wanting McDonalds hamburgers because the other kids had them. Well, his mother ends up cooking him a hamburger with green peppers and onions. He ends up crying because it's not McDonalds.
Ever since then..when I make hamburgers with green peppers and onions, we call them Eddie Murphy burgers. lol

Spaghetti is "piscatetti", and milk is "muk-muk". And hamburgers are "hamburglars". :-)

when our son was little he called water ahung. We dont know where he ever got this. The closest I could ever figure out was aqua in spanish. I think it is anyway. We someetimes spoke german around him but that is vasser in german. When I was growing up we always called hamburger and noodles hot dish GALOSHES because it was Goulash.

Remember that commercial a long time ago for Campbell's soup, where they cooked the soup and called everyone to eat. When everyone was sitting at the table, one last little kid came in from outside and said, "Is it soup yet?"

Well, every time a meal is ready at my house, we holler "It's Soup!!!" That means it's time to eat.

One time DD (about 4 or 5 at the time) was staying at her grandparents and my dad asked her if she wanted some "watchamalcallit" before putting some sausage on her plate. Some years ago she told me that she thought "watchamacallit" was a special kind of sausage until her teens. LOL

I'll ask DH to pick up some "Cackle Berries and Moo Juice" once in a while.

I love the "white wash" name for skim milk, especially since that's what I have to drink.

I make a lot of one-pot dinners, too. I've taken to making "Chicken Stuff." I'll take left-over roasted chicken, add celery, onions, carrots, and anything else that's in the fridge and cook until the veggies are done. Plop it on some brown rice and call it dinner. I've made it several times; each time it's different.

I don't eat meat like I use to. I'm not a vegetarian as such, but I seem to have lost my taste for most meats. So, I tell Wes I'm making "roasted beast" or cooking a "hunk of dead animal" for dinner. Doesn't seem to bother his appetite.

I think Macaroni Screw-Up will be on our table soon!

When Rhiannon was little she would call juice Gee and we still tease her by calling it that. Also Dan's cousin would call strawberries, straw babies so we call it that too. Another one is mee-oos for tomatoes. And when it is time to feed the kitties or puppies we tell them it is time for foodies (which is what my aunt called breakfast cereal when she was little.
