Wedding-warning, lots of pictures

Here we are, it's finally over. Every darn thing hurts, from my forearm which I burned on the oven to my feet from the silver heels. Ashley and kevin are honeymooning in Sarasota, Florida, she's already called to tell me how much fun she's having and how it looks like a Costa Rican jungle and they're going to walk on the beach and watch the sunset, then go back to their place and have fresh watermelon and grilled fish.

Anyway, yesterday was the day from he!!. Everything went wrong, from the beginning. I got up at 6:30 and went to the hall to do food prep because it's a Catholic hall and we couldn't get into it on Friday until after evening mass. So, we worked for a few hours, I left Elery with instructions, the phone rang, it was Ashley. Could I run to Walmart (the only game in town and I HATE the place) and pick up corsage pins, lacy ruffly socks for the little girls, bottled water for the bridesmaids, white ribbon and a pair of scissors? Yeah, sure. I go to the ATM to get cash, it jams, I have to wait for someone to come and fix it so I can get my withdrawal. I do my shopping, check out. Half way home the check engine light comes on in the Jeep. when I get home, I have no water because they are working on a new medical center in town and the water has been "temporarily shut off". No warning, of course. The phone rings, it's Ashley, people need to get into the hall and I have the key, can I come right back (20 miles). Um, no, I can't. I wash up, do my hair, get dressed, run back with the key, the place has already been unlocked by the caretaker.

I go to the church, deliver everything and lunch, it's about 80 degrees and Ashley is about to melt in 30 pounds of tuille. She's also sick to her stomack and afraid she's going to trip and fall. Amanda had Kevin's ring on her thumb and lost it and we searched the church for about half an hour until it was found in a flower girl's basket where Amanda had been filling baskets with flower petals.

Then people start coming in and Sherry (sheshebop) and Roger were there. I felt better immediately. I was sorry that Peppi didn't make it, or Nancy, but the gas prices would probably have required a bank loan anyway! We were still doing pictures outside on the lawn, here is Ashley and all the bridesmaids, that's Amanda right next to her.

Hey, chase, like the Thunderbird? (grin) That's what they took their drive around town in, sitting up on the back, and complete with police escort, lights and sirens, but that was after the ceremony.

Back at the church, we did more pictures, that's Makayla playing with the other little flower girl, Jaylynn. She's Kevin's cousin's daughter.

Ashley made it through without falling down and I didn't catch anything on fire lighting the unity candle. When the ceremony was over and the pastor announced the married couple, she tried to step down the stairs and was struggling. Kevin immediately stepped up the three steps, picked her up and carried her out. No chance of her falling down there, LOL.

OK, now the food related stuff. We had Joey's Killer Lasagna, everyone loved it. We had chicken alfredo with broccoli, not a huge hit, there was a lot left. The spinach/ricotta cannellini was a hit, but I still have about 100 in the freezer, uncooked, because I ran out of oven space. That's OK, we had enough. Meatballs in red sauce, big caeser salads with parmesan and croutons, glazed carrots that worked out very well with Helene's suggestion of just melted marmalade and a bit of butter, and they weren't soft, mushy, or puree! Bruschetta with garlic bread, hummus with pita chips and fresh vegetables trays to start, along with iced tea, coffee and punch.

No pictures, I was a little busy serving dinner, LOL, but maybe Sherry got some.

I did bake the black and white wedding cake. Bottom tier is LindaC's carrot cake. Middle tier is the sour cream lemon that someone posted here. Top tier is pistachio. All with black cake wraps, fondant covering and black and white fondant twisted rope edging.

I also used Colleenoz's chocolate cake recipe to make the police themed groom's cake:

And pixistix' hot milk cake, three layers, for the fire themed groom's cake:

this was the fondant crysanthemum that was supposed to be on the front of the wedding cake. It wouldn't stick with fondant or with royal icing. I even tried putting it on with toothpicks but the petals just folded over. Oh, and the "fondarific" fondant? Eh. It wasn't as bad as traditional fondant, but it sure wasn't good. Most people peeled it off, just like other fondant.

Ashley had a bit of trouble getting the knife through the fondant, but eventually they prevailed.

did the traditional feeding each other cake. Yup, food fight!

they cut the groom's cake with a fireman's axe. For those who haven't figured it out yet, Kevin is a full time police officer, also on the fire department part time.

Instead of favors (thank goodness I didn't have to can 150 jars of salsa!), they had a black and white candy buffet table:

Lovely black and white centerpieces. Nope, not my idea, you know I am not crafty, but I did buy the spools of black netting for the runners and that's as crafty as I get. They filled the centerpieces with black and white marbles, some water and a white flower, then some silver spirals of some type. The guys later used the centerpiece vases to drink beer, the glasses were not big enough!

Kevin had a little trouble finding the garter under all that dress....

My niece Savannah and Makayla, the Monkey Princess, treated us to some karaoke:

We didn't run out of food or liquor, and we had a good time. This morning I had water again, the check engine light on the Jeep went back off, and I have a big bottle of ibuprofen. Today was DAvid's birthday, so we had ice cream cake from Dairy Queen, I was not going to bake another cake, I just couldn't.

And so, I'm going to go take some of that ibuprofen and figure out why in the heck my right butt cheek aches. Elery says it was because by this morning my butt was dragging. (grin)

Thanks for sharing, I'm sorry to have missed being there, it looked wonderful! The bride and her court were beautiful, however the wedding cake was spectacular! I loved the groom's cakes too-- what technique did you use to make the drawing/writing so precise?

Annie, you're an amazing woman to pull all of this off, but heck, we knew that now, didn't we?

P.S. inquiring minds want to know- What kinds of candy were did they have on that candy buffet? I'm drooling! LOL

Thanks, everyone! MWheel, my Grandmother's china is called Silver Moon and it's by Warwick. I'll attach a link at the bottom, where you can see an example of it. Jazmynsmom, the best compliment I've gotten lately was when a friend came over and was looking at the cabinet when it was only halfway done. She said, "I never would have recognized it's potential!" and I felt flattered. I thought I'd always had a pretty good eye for that sort of thing. :-) Here is a link that might be useful: Warwick Silver Moon

Latest NEW Exc. Heat Warning/Heat Advisory Thru Wed.

    Q

    Comments (8)
Barbara, Hey, you don't have to worry about me---I have neither a heat advisory or an excessive heat warning because our humidity is running much lower than y'all's. Our RH may start out in the 80s in the mornings (last week it was in the 90s) but it drops to the 30s or 40s by mid-afternoon, so our heat index numbers are only going 3 or 4 points higher than our temp at the most. So, I'm better off than many of you because it has been relatively dry here. Having said that, it is hot. I try to get outside around 6 a.m. and lately, back inside, no later than 9:30 or 10:00 a.m. (Before it got insanely hot, I'd stay out until noon.) In the evenings, I'm only out briefly to see if anything needs water. It is just too hot to weed, mow or mulch, I'll catch up on those when the heat breaks. The fruit is coming in hot and heavy so I'm just staying in the kitchen most of the time. I also think I'll be making salsa by the end of the week. As always, when it rains it pours, but this year it is raining plums, peaches, peppers, tomatoes and squash. Last year it mostly rained tomatoes and peppers. You know how a kitchen feels when you're canning all day....just so unbearably hot and steamy. I am SO grateful we have air conditioning. When I think of what women used to go through, doing their endless rounds of canning, bread-baking, cheese-making, etc. in a hot kitchen with no AC, I feel spoiled by comparison. Often, I sort of resent the time I spend canning because it keeps me out of the garden. (Kind of a paradox, isn't it, because you can't do that kind of canning without a garden but then it 'redirects' you from gardening activity to kitchen activity!) Now, though, I am happy I have another week's worth of canning to keep me inside and out of the garden. I couldn't be outside exhausting myself in the garden even if I wanted to right now, because the produce won't allow it. With this heat wave, that's a good thing. I hope everyone remembers to drink lots of fluids, stay in the shade and come inside to cool off inside the air conditioned house. I am concerned this kind of weather will hold for weeks, or months. It kind of reminds me of 2005, which was a horribly hot, dry year. Dawn

Wonder woman Annie does it again! From those pics, it looks like everything just went perfectly, and that's what matters, that it all comes out perfect in the end. I love the look of the bridesmaids - their dress, hair, flowers, etc. And the cakes are marvelous! Ashley is beautiful and Kevin - so handsome. Monkey Princess is adorable but where is Bruver?

You could definitely go into the wedding cake business/catering at any time, but a person would have to be out of their mind to go into the entire business of wedding production!

Wow, what a gorgeous wedding! When my brother got married they had a black and white theme for the wedding party. We got many compliments on the dresses.

When people hear that you're doing ALL the cooking, it's hard to imagine the outcome. It's mind-boggling that one person could do so much, and do it picture-perfect. Your cakes are phenomenal, and the rest of meal would be delectable as well.

Man, I only hope you really do relax and put your feet up and take a well-deserved break. Now's the time to take a mini-holiday!

thanks, everyone! I'm going to print this and the other thread for Ashley's wedding scrapbook. I'm sure someone will make one, but it won't be me!

Rest? Nah, I went home yesterday from Dave's party, started pumping the water off the pool cover, planted some tomato plants in my raised garden bed that Elery built me, made as many trips up and down the basement steps as I could stand, putting away serving pieces and roasters and coolers and babysat with the WonderDoodle. He's with me while they are on their honeymoon and I'm taking him to the vetr tomorrow to be neutered, it's my wedding gift, LOL.

Today, I'm back at work, trying to catch up with the 3 days I took off next week, before I take time off to get my knee surgery on the 13th of June.

Sharon and Woodie, Ashley looks very much like me. The family has long called her my "clone" and "mini-me". (grin) She's much like me in personality too. Dad used to tell me she was my "shot at immortality". She's also sweet and good hearted and kind and smart, so I'm a very fortunate mother indeed.

Linda and Nancy, I missed you both and wish you could have come. Linda, I think half of the fire department would have played the butt quarter game with you, LOL, especially after they started drinking beer out of the centerpiece vases.

Nancy, Ashley says to tell you and Kim she loves you both. She's kind of wanting to go back to school and maybe become a PA, so she'll probably e asking Kim for advice! I can't tell you how useful that cambro has been, and now Elery and I can bring your stuff back. Three weddings in 12 months and now your kitchen is done, we can take a kitchen tour, return your equipment and have a good excuse to head north now the weather is getting good. I could use a break. (grin)

Ellen, the candy on the candy table was peppermint sticks (yes, they come in black and white!), black jelly beans (the only kind of candy that was all eaten, believe it or not), M&Ms, sixlets, malted milk balls, Jordon almonds and the individually wrapped ones were buttermints with bow tie wrappers. Oh, there were some mints in there too somewhere, chocolate mint centers covered with white and black coating, little balls of mint.

Ilana, I did NOT make the dress, thank goodness, I only altered it. It had a zip back and she really wanted a corset type back, so I added loops, a "gusset" and white ribbon lacing.

Three people asked me if I would consider catering jobs and 2 asked me if I baked wedding cakes for other people. I told them they couldn't pay me enough to do it for anyone who isn't related!

Mitch, the cake stand is mine. Now. I bought it on ebay for $28.00. I was excited, they are over $100 new everywhere I looked, so I resorted to second hand. It's silverplate and very heavy, I was delighted with that purchase and won't use it enough to care whether it is second hand.

Jasdip, they will live about 15 miles from me, when I move to the farm it will become about 30 miles away. Plenty close enough to visit! The only real problem I had with the meal is that two of my "helpers" didn't show up, so we also had to do all the serving. Thank goodness it was buffet style! I didn't do it alone, though, Elery was right there with me all the time, and my mother. Bless her heart, she's 75 and still can outwork most of us!

Deb, I wouldn't do it again for anyone except you! When your girls are ready in a decade, call me. I'll bring the Magic Mill back to you and start cranking out pasta and garlic bread. We'll have to borrow Nancy's equipment, though. (grin)

Sol, he did nearly get lost. Oh, and that fondant? Fondarific! It is an absolute dream to work with, but it stretches like rubber and doesn't taste any better than the other stuff, I don't think. I put a good crumb coat layer of frosting under it and people just peeled it off...

No, Pam, definitely not a redneck Bonanza, except for the guys emptying the centerpieces and drinking beer from the vases, LOL. My nephew (brother of the redneck bonanza groom) wants me to bake his wedding cake in September, though. Color theme is camoflage, LOL. I think it would look pretty good on that silver cake stand. (grin)

Oh, and the lettering on the cakes? That's something called "edible images" or "cake wraps". It's the decoration on the tiered cake and the toppers for the other two, plus the flames on the side of the fireman cake. Peel off the backing, stick on slightly sticky frosting and it sucks right in and becomes part of the frosting. Entirely eedible and no flavor, I love 'em> And they come in Camoflage!

CC, I think Sherry took some pictures of me, but I know she had something scheduled with the grandkids, so she's probably not gotten to posting them yet!

Jessica, Bruce kind of behaved. He was flirting with the DJ's girlfriend, and ticked off both the DJ AND his girlfriend. He nearly missed the father-daughter dance because he had to take off and go kiss up to his girlfriend, who had left in a huff. (grin) And he's not my problem. She's not the first bimbo, she's actually kind of a nice woman that the girls like, so I felt a bit sorry for her.

They had an "anniversary dance" for married couples and people had to drop out as the DJ announced "everyone who has been married less than a year, sit down", then everyone married less than 5 years, 10 years, etc., until only one couple was left, then they got to give marriage advice. The longest married couple was Bruce's parents, who have been married nearly 57 years. I guess they should have given some of that advice to their own son.....

Gina, that is indeed a "spray on" tan. You know she didn't get that tan in Michigan in May, it's 51F and raining right now, not much beach time. :-)

RR, it was a bit crazy but it all came together in the end, although I only got out of the kitchen long enough to watch the cake cutting, the bouquet and garter toss and I had ONE dance with the groom. Other than that, it was all cooking, serving and cleaning up. Ah well, it kept me out of trouble and it was Ashley's party, not mine. She was happy, so it's all good!

David, I do have a long weekend and I think maybe I'll make Elery take me out for dinner for my birthday. I'm sure not baking a cake...

Oh, and for those who wanted a picture of Bruvver, before he ate cake and lasagna and had punch and ate too much candy from the candy buffet and threw up, while his shirt was still white, here's Bruvver:

Wow, Annie, I stand in awe! I just don't know how you do it all. But I know your kids are sure glad you do. I sure hope you get a few days of "slow" time - you surely have earned it. Kudos too to Elery for being right there beside you. That picture of Bruvver is priceless.

    You done SO good, Mom!

ci_lantro, what makes you think you're safe just because you only have sons? "Thing One" is a son, and his upcoming wedding will be here in our town, not his fiancee's or even where the two of them live.

Annie, come on, there has to be ONE picture of you! We want to see!

I showed Clive the pics and the first thing...and only thing...he commented on was the Bird! LOL

    Just shows our priorities.

I loved all the pictures, but especially ones of the cakes, which were quite stunning! My first thought when I saw the picture of Ashley was how much she looks like you, and so I guess I was not wrong in that assumption.

You got to have great themes as well - I loved the black & white, but the fireman's these was my favorite. I'm very impressed with everything you pulled off!! And you have a wonderful family to appreciate you.
