Voila - My coloured sugar

I have become addicted to it for decorating as my hand is so unsteady. I am really bad at royal icing and writing on cakes. Anyways, it was my daughter's 7th birthday party and for loot bags we made cookie bouquets for her guests. She did a lot of the decorating and you can't tell if I made it or she did!

To repeat what has been said a number of times before, there are Red Maples (Acer rubrum) in varying cultivars and then there are other cultivars of maples whose leaves turn red in the fall. There are also maples, mostly Japanese maples but other species as well, whose leaves come in red or reddish, some of whose leaves stay red and some turn green. The TRUE Red Maple is the A. rubrum, so called, as far as I know, because the flowers, which are very early before the leaves, are very red, as are the early stages of the samaras. Any other tree, if of another variety of maple (Norway, silver, etc.) MAY have the word red somewhere in its name, or have red leaves all summer or in the fall, but it will NOT BE a Red Maple, although it may be a red-colored maple, for example, the above mentioned Crimson King Norway Maple. Sorry for the lecture, but it's a pet peeve, and so you got the rant....

You're definitely pushing the limits here. The normal range of the Sugar Maple stops in Middle TN and the lower plains states. There is a closely related tree - the Black Maple - which is sometimes called the 'Southern Sugar Maple' that you could also try. Its natural range goes a little further south than the Sugar Maple. (Its called Black Maple because the bark on older trees gets a very dark, sort of sooty looking color.) All that being said, your Sugar Maple will probably survive if you take good care of it. Maples can grow in the shade, and in fact in Tennessee where I am they almost always show up as understory trees. They can grow in full sun, but they seem just as happy in light to medium shade. In your case, I would give it a dappled shade location, if you have one. You could also try one of the red maple / silver maple hybrids, such as 'Autumn Fantasy', which have astounding fall color and are relatively fast growing. heh. im not a fan of pruning the sugar cane but there is this one little corner of my property that looks over to a pedestrian bridge so if I can propagate it over to the left about 10 feet it will block that all out. so im pretty much propping it for privacy but was wondering about the sugar aspect. Right now im soaking some 2' pieces of it for 6 wks.. I heard it works best to do that first. does your husband just put it straight in the ground and keep it wet or soak it first? thanks!

I loved Sugar Moon so much that I bought 3..... however, I am down to one... One died in my flood last fall.... and another one died by growing backwards a couple of years ago. They can get 6 or 7 foot tall here.... but I learned NOT to let them get that tall because of the canker. It seemed to me when we have our gale wind (or even just heavy wind for several days) that SM starts to get canker..... I think when his canes get whipped around it caused them to get it.... not sure, but it sure seemed like it.... I now TAKE extra long cuttings of his flowers to try and keep it short..... my bushes have all been pretty narrow... but I realized that the height of mine is probably due to my all year long growing season. I absolutely love this rose .... but it is hard to maintain. Here in Florida, mine gets just a little over half day sun.

Very nice work! If you ever want to use a bag for icing consider getting a mousepad with the big log/berm on the end to rest your wrist upon, it might be a great help to steady your hand.

Those are just wonderful. I bet the party guests loved receiving them. I think they would be a great idea for Easter as well. They look so Springy. I have a question or two. How did you get the coloured sugar to stick to the cookies and how did you attach the sticks to the back of the cookies? I love the little gumdrop flowers as well. Great job!!

Thanks. They are rolled sugar cookies. The icing I used was icing sugar and meringue powder with water. I'd say I use about 3/4 tsp powder to about a cup of icing sugar. I add the water a tsp at a time until it's very spreadable, almost soupy. Drop a bit on a cookie, spread with fingertips to edges (almost edge - whatever you like) and dip in coloured sugar. They dry within an hour. I even double dip them about 10 minutes later when I want a second colour. I also attach butterfly bodies with the icing. When I bake them I usually lay the stick (whether it's the lollipop stick or a wooden skewer) down first and press the cookie on top (lightly). It doesn't stick as well with the wooden sticks so I will use the icing on the backs to keep them in place. It's super fast too. We can do 20 cookies within 15 minutes. I did a baby bouquet with royal icing and it took me 2 hours with the mixing, spreading and it still looked pretty bad. Cute, if I said I was drunk when I did it or if I said the kids did it. I will try that trick Sands but I think, by nature, I am wobbly.

Any trick we can do that helps you make more beautiful cookies is worth the effort - keep up the great work cookie you make beautiful baked goods girl! My mom has parkinsons so I always look for ways to help her stabilize too. :)

Those are terrific! What a special and clever Mom you are to have gone to all that trouble. I'm sure your daughter and the girls really appreciated it.
