Sugar Cane
Comments (9)I grow it. It is located on the west side of my duck pen. We dump water from the duck ponds on it everyday in the summer and every other day in the winter. So, it loves water but I'm not sure that it really needs as much as it gets. It gets the afternoon sun and does fine. It has been growing in the same spot for over a year and a half. Last year it got some frost and also was hit this year since I live in an outlying area. While it does slow down it's growth a lot in the cooler months, it comes back as soon as it warms up. My horses love eating the leaves and that along with the shade that it gives my ducks is the reason that I grow it....See MoreSprouting a coconut? And rooting sugar cane?
Comments (8)You'd probably have more chance with the brown dehusked coconuts. I'm not sure if the US treats them differently than the UK but I know they can easily be made to sprout here. Just put the coconut on its side in a deep pot of well drained soil rich in potash. Make sure the coconut is almost fully covered; dehusked coconuts need the weight of the soil around them prevent them from cracking open. Keep warm, but not too warm (this can also crack the coconut). The green coconuts might be able to sprout if you find the biggest most mature one and put it in a warm place in the sun for a while until the outside goes brown. Then plant it like a normal coconut. I think someone else suggested that method too....See Moresugar cane and Halloween traditions
Comments (14)I remember trick or treating in the 90's back when most kids still did it! We used to take pillow cases around and fill most of it. It makes me sad now that I haven't had a single trick or treater since I've become an adult. I recently moved to a new neighborhood though so i'm hopeful they trick or treat here since many houses are all decked out in Halloween decorations. I bought a whole bunch of full sized candy bars because I remember the "cool" house with the big candy when I was a kid, and I want to be that house now. :) We always were lectured about razor blades, etc. We weren't allowed to eat any candy until my mom took it to her room and inspected it all. It took me a few years to realize her "safety inspections" were just an excuse to look at what we got and claim the good stuff for herself, lol....See MorePalm? Red Sugar Cane? Something Else?
