Pantry project finished!

Yesterday I painted, today I am organizing! Here are the before and after pics:

I am weeding things out but still have some space on an upper shelf out not seen in the pic. To the left of the door I have hanging hooks for strainers, the wok, large roasting pan and my aprons. To the right on the floor I have a large wood crate filled with baking sheets and large baking pans with the emergency light on a hook. The two large stock pots are in the right corner on the floor and the onion basket hangs in the left rear corner. The heavy things are low down w/i easy reach and the Foreman grill is in a convenient location so maybe I'll use it more?

It feels really good to have a workable pantry that is better organized with everything easier to get to!

Thank you so much, all, for the lovely compliments, I'm so glad you like it. We're pretty pleased, and the only thing we have that we simply could not fit in is a warming drawer, a Frigidaire scratch 'n dent special, so it wasn't expensive, but it's just sitting in the barn. Maybe I'll put it in CL, but I'm still delusionally holding out hope that I can find a way to use it. To answer your questions, the stuff hanging on the wall is mostly plastic (melamine, I think), the only exceptions are the fish on either side of the sink and one or two of the stuff on the wall over the slider door, they are hand painted ceramic. I know that TJ Maxx is routinely derided on this forum (for good reason), but most everything on the walls is from there, collected over a period of years, some of those pieces are over 15 years old. You can find good quality, unique pieces at the TJX company of stores, you just have to pick through and pounce when you see something you like. There are also several dollar store numbers up there, as well as a few vintage things. I am all about fun and colorful stuff, and while I try not to buy a lot of made in China stuff, I don't especially care about the retail provenance of things. Now to the questions. justgottabeme, below are a few more pics of our house, and I think I mis-typed, we're not almost done, I think that was wishful thinking, we're kinda, sorta almost done with the downstairs, we still have a whole bath and a lot of work in our 2 upstairs bedrooms... amysrq, thank you for the tip on the tile, I may look into it. We really wanted Marmoleum, but I damn near fell off my chair when we got the quote(of course, ahem, it was for a pattern with one of their cool edge treatments). The next day we were at an auction, this tile was there, I paid .25/foot, and we installed it. My first, and last, experience with tile outside of the bathroom, we detest it, it's too hard and cold for us. workinprogress08, I don't think the pears are pewter, they are some kind of milled metal (made in India), and they came from Marshall's (hem). I love pewter and brass and have a few vintage pieces of both, it's common to see them at my fav junque haunts, they aren't popular (at least in these parts), so the prices are excellent. I'm glad you liked the icefishing pic, it's funny, people fish all summer, but 10x as many fish in the winter. One of our dogs roams the ice looking for treats from friendly fishermen. She eats well out there. Here are some more pics of the main entrance and mud "area". We're too organizationally and house cleaningly challenged to have a mud room with a door, it would be a total disaster, so we created the mud area by our main entrance. The wall color is BM Med-evil Times (mixed in Aura matte), trim is BM Navajo Red (Aura semi-gloss) and the white is BM White Marigold (Aura matte). The stuff on the walls is mostly from our local junque shops. Looking from the kitchen: From kitchen, looking up the stairs (just fixed the nail pops, gotta touch the White Marigold, yikes!: Coat areas (yup, we have two), the shelving unit is part of a display, painted in BM Buttered Yam (Aura, semi-gloss): Bench (CL special): Looking down: Yes, that is laundry drying, we have 2 indoor lines set up: Message center (metal office thing, came from Kodak in Rochester, NY, free from my cuz): Entry way to kitchen: Cabs are BM Bainbridge Blue (Aura semi-gloss): My poor topless range, someday I'll get her a lid: What she really needs is a nice Modernaire, but mr. sandyponder won't let me sell the kid: More cabs: Bainbridge Blue outside and Med-Evil Times inside: OK, I think I have bored you all enough for one post. love how it turned out! I remember that kitchen - it had a number of problems to work thru and around! but you did it! I love the stove - it looks like a deep orange on my monitor. and the sink and peninsula - wonderful. love that little platform in the corner of your sink for the faucet. I also love those pull out boards - those have got to come in handy for a number of uses. Wish I had 1 or 2 myself. And the BRASS - love it w/its patina. no matter the use of other metals in there - it doesn't matter. It 'evolved' - lol! yep, great job. Hope you are loving it! oh - and yes so happy you posted it. Great ideas for others to get from it. Not all of us can have or want to have a 50,000 $+ gut of our kitchen. I think the majority of people have to make do and change what they can when they can and if they can.

Late to this thread but your BPantry shares a lot in common with what we're contemplating. Can you share dimensions of: 1. width of floor 2. width (i.e., depth) of each countertops 3. width (ie, depth) of cabinets? And do you recommend any changes to those for a de novo project? We're considering: 40-42" for the floor width - do not want it too wide or there is lost efficiency of movement; but of course do not want to be confined when a drawer is opened; 18" deep countertops - this is, after all not the kitchen, but is a clean-up and storage area. But if we do not place the d/w at the nether dead-end of this long room (we may or may not), then at least one counter will of course need be the requisite 24 for the d/w 15" & 18" deep cabinets. Thanks for your and any others' advice...perhaps we will begin a thread of its own.

Wow! What a difference! Mine looks like your "before" picture. What a wonderful accomplishment! How large was your space to begin with? I just may borrow some of your ideas, if you don't mind.

The actual space of the pantry did not change. It is 3'10" wide by a little less than 3' deep. I had some carpenters make new shelves in an L-shaped configuration that were 8" deep on only one side and across the back. These were spaced about 9" apart. Two of the top really deep shelves (out of the pictures) were kept their original size and holds lots of stuff that is only rarely used, like thermoses, sandwich maker, waffle maker, cookie press, yogurt maker, deep fryer, etc.

I've got a coat closet that I use as a pantry. Right now it's got 24 inch deep shelves. The problem is that everything gets pushed to the back & I can't easily locate anything. I like your idea of L-shaped shelves. A much more useful configuration.

It is amazing what some new shelves and hooks will do for a panrty isn't it? It looks wonderfuland the best part is you know where everything is and where it belongs.

I can't keep myself from going to the kitchen and opening the pantry door, turning on the light, and just....lookin'!
LOL - it takes so little to make me happy - but Lord...I'm tired!

Teresa, I love your new pantry so much that I phoned my handyman, Lance, yesterday & told him to schedule me on his list to redo my pantry & a couple other closets that would really benefit from a storage solution. Great job! You must feel so organized & efficient!

Thanks for the motivation. I've needed to get this done for five years.

Wow Teresa I'm impressed. And you gave me an idea of what we can do with a pantry cupboard that we have. Your set up would be perfect. I think I have almost the same amount of space.

Ohhhh, it makes me so happy to know that some of you are motivated to re-do your own pantries! Today that little voice in my head has been saying "WHY didn't you do this years ago?"

Only one thing I would change: I'd make the shelves on the back wall just a little wider - say maybe 10" instead of 8". But no more than that - heck, I can go into my pantry and turn around if I want. I can even go into the pantry and shut the door if I wanted. It's great to walk *into* the pantry to get something.

Ann, my pantry space measures 3'10" wide and 2"10" deep. By leaving the left side wall free of shelves, it seems so much bigger than the actual measurements. Plus, I put in hooks on that wall to hold 2 strainers, 1 stir-fry(wok) pan, 1 bread basket, an oval roasting pan and a ceramic hook beside the door facing to hold 3 aprons. There is room for the broom on that side also. I could still put some hooks up high if I want more.

Another thought, my guys used melamine covered shelves with iron-on melamine stripping on the front edge...no painting and easy to wipe clean when necessary.

Oh what I would give for a pantry! Yours looks wonderful Teresa. Maybe I can convince "himself" to build me something like that downstairs.
