90% kitchen and need help- how to finish antique cabinet?
Comments (22)You have done a wonderful job! Love your kitchen! I'm in the middle of using milk paint now to paint my cabinets and I can say that I just love it. This is my first experience with it and I want to paint everything in my house with it....but I will restrain myself! I didn't have to prime at all, but you do need to get all the stain and any polyurethane off the cabinet first. Milk paint does the best on wood that has never been painted. There is an adhesive promoter that I bought and added to mine just to make sure it stayed on since my cabinets were stained previously. I have no idea how it will hold up, but so far, so good. I'm not finished with them yet however, so time will tell. Milk paint soaks into the wood, so whatever you do, make sure you will not want it to be stained again, since I think it takes a nuclear bomb to get it off. The company I ordered it from does have a milk paint remover however, but have no idea how that works. I ordered mine from The Real Milk Paint Co. (www.realmilkpaint.com) which is a different place than the link steff_1 gave you, but you can check out both places....See MoreSo now that the kitchen is done - need pantry help!
Comments (9)Thanks riverspots! The floor is already vinyl, so I wouldn't paint it. Armstrong makes vinyl "peel & stick" squares in both black & white that I thought I could put over the existing floor in a checkerboard. I don't know if its really as easy as it sounds though. They also sell it as vinyl sheeting. But I heard that is more complicated to install. We can handle paint, but after that, we are just not DIY people! I like the idea of schoolhouse style lights - I hate those florescent strips!! We had them in the old kitchen also. Yuk! We want to keep the ceiling white & then paint all the walls. Keeping the cabinets/shelves cream (same shade as the kitchen cabinets). I originally thought to keep the green in there also, but DH has his heart set on blue & since he's the one doing the painting.... but I told him I get final say on which blue ;) No - the brick is not glazed - should be able to paint it ok Thanks for the input!...See MoreFinished kitchen - check out the pantry
Comments (43)rtwilliams - Yes, we added the great room, kitchen, a master bedroom with his and her baths, and a large garage. We also remodled some of the rest of the house. I plan to post some bath and laundry room pictures. fouramblues - you made me laugh. labbie - my husband bought the commercial grinder and coffee pot several years ago, and installed them in my itty bitty kitchen where they took up very valuable real estate. They are a dream to have to make coffee, as the water is plumbed in and everything is automatic, but they are large. It was those two pieces though that inspired me to create the whole beverage/butler pantry idea. Ginny20, ppbenn - hey maybe I will start a whole new trend on double refrigerators. walking chick - I am so glad you delurked to comment. You will get great advice and ideas here. Oldbat2be - thanks so much. I am so glad you noticed that picture. My pantry will have a little memorial space for my grandmother. Her picture has been in my kitchen since she passed away. She is the one who taught me to cook and garden. I have her old kitchen dishes in the top shelf of the pantry, and I use her old measuring cups every day. aliris19 - I love the stools, too, and I actually built the island to go with the stools ( I bought them before I built the kitchen), but they may not stay, as they block the view. We will keep them for now, but I don't know that they will make it for the long haul. They are really comfortable and they swivel. Oh, and I do have one more, lol. I decided 4 was too many. camphappy - materials were a real issue here. I just could not get some things I wanted - like soapstone. The granite I originally wanted would come in and get shipped to everywhere but here. I finally went to St. Louis and picked out an in stock granite and the fabricator had to go pick it up. Our fabricator was an hour and a half from us. The internet was my friend for a lot of things. Plumbing and light fixtures were mostly all ordered from the internet. As were many of the appliances. biochem101 - yes, it does feel like heaven. For I while I was rather embarrassed that it turned out so large and grand, but I got over that and now I just enjoy it. gr8day - I am so glad you saw this. I probably would not have posted this kitchen if you hadn't asked about it in another post. Thanks to everyone for all the nice compliments. In regards to being so organized - it is truly easy to be organized when you have a place for everything. The things that tend to create clutter are those that you don't know where they go, or don't have room for them....See MoreNeed help ASAP w/ whether to add pantry to kitchen area
Comments (9)Thanks for all the input, everyone! After taking your ideas and those of our builder and friends/family into account, husband and I ultimately decided to leave the plan as is. We figured the bigger room size will make the space more functional, whether as a dining room, playroom or office. Fingers crossed for a good pantry cabinet design! bpathome, I love the idea of storage banquette in the breakfast area! Had never thought of it but it seems perfect. Not only will it give us extra storage but I think it will allow us to have the table slightly off-center (so as to allow more clearance for the door to the back deck) without looking odd. I'm thinking maybe even a large L-shaped banquette, going under both sets of windows and into corner. I've attached a pic, which is dark (waited until framers left so wouldn't be in the way) but might give a better idea of the breakfast area space. The windows to right will be same sizes as those to left--framers just hadn't trimmed all the OSB yet. ILoveRed, we started with a stock plan as inspiration but needed some changes due to our lot, local regulations, etc. So, we drew out some changes on the original stock plan and had a local draftsman draw the full plans. It is not perfect (had issues with stair placement and a measurement was off on garage) and I wish we'd gone the extra mile and had an architect modify it for us but our builder is great and so far has worked around the issues. Thanks again everyone!...See Moreleboferr
