I'm gonna do it......14 layer birthday cake

Every year I make a birthday dessert for my DH's co-worker, usually something decadent. Most of you have seen these pics a few times, but here's a few things I've made for her before. We are close friends with her, so I enjoy doing something for her to celebrate her bday. I'm always on the lookout for something a little more involved than your basic bday cake (not that there's anything wrong with that) and when I saw this, I knew I had to try it. Some lovely person on this forum posted about this blog (www.bakerella.blogspot.com) and I sincerely thank you-it's been great fun to read. Anyways, the recipe itself doesn't look too difficult, but more time-consuming. I'm sure mine won't be as pretty as hers, but one can hope :) Wish me luck please!!!!!

Tracey, I'm excited to see how this works out for you! I've actually had this recipe (or something similar) in my files for a very long time, but hadn't really figured out the logistics of making that many layers at one time. That was the point that tripped me up every time, Because...who has that many cake pans? (Now I get it.) Be sure to post a picture; I can't wait to see it! All I can say is This Person must be a very good friend, or you've got a highly competitive challenge going on...

Happy Birthday Ashley! AB, you have a lovely family, and Ashley looks gorgeous with her new hairstyle which goes so well with her oval face. Looks like a razor cut, is it? Jude, the Hot Milk Cake was what I used for my wedding cake, I love the stuff. Here's the recipe I used, both for cake and frosting. The frosting does not contain powdered sugar. Hot Milk Cake - Pixistix Old fashioned, simple, melts in your mouth! 4 eggs 2 cups sugar 2 1/4 cups flour 2 1/4 tsp. baking powder 1 tsp. vanilla 1 1/4 cups milk 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter Beat eggs and sugar well. Combine flour with bk. powder and add to egg mixture along with vanilla. Heat milk and butter together until butter melts; gradually add to batter, beating until well blended. Pour batter into a greased 9x13 pan. Bake at 350 for 30 to 35 minutes. Topping fom the daughter of Cindy NY Brown Sugar Topping 1 cup packed light brown sugar 1/4 cup whipping cream 1 T unsalted butter 3/4 tsp vanilla 1/2 cup chopped pecans Combine the brown sugar, whipping cream & butter in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, whisking constantly until smooth. Remove from heat. Stir in the vanilla. Let stand 10 minutes. Whisk until of spreading consistency. Stir in the pecans. Spread over the brownies or cake. Let stand 1 hour or until set. Serve cold or at room temperature. Makes enough for an 8x8 pan. Just a note, the topping seems pretty runny when you put it on the cake, but it sets right up when cool, so don't worry. Annie

I think this may be it - I've had it in my "want to try" file for along time. * Exported from MasterCook * Praline Carrot Cake with Candied Pecans Recipe By : Serving Size : 0 Preparation Time :0:00 Categories : Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method -------- ------------ -------------------------------- 1 lb. Carrots -- peeled and sliced 6 eggs 3 c. flour 8 oz. Crushed pineapple -- drained 2 c. sugar 1 T. vanilla 2 tsp. Baking powder 1 c. pecans -- chopped 1 tsp. Baking soda c. coconut 1 tsp. Salt 1 1/3 c. oil 2 tsp. Cinnamon Cook carrots until tender. Drain. Chop in food processor or coarsely mash with potato masher (should have 1 Â½ cups) Stir together flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon. Make a well in center. Add oil, eggs, pineapple and vanilla. Beat on low speed until combined. Fold in carrots, pecans, and coconut. Spread into 3 9" round pans. Bake at 350 for 35-40 min. Cinnamon Cream Cheese Frosting 8 oz. Cream cheese Â½ c. butter 1 tsp. Cinnamon 1 tsp. Vanilla 6 c. powdered sugar Beat cream cheese, butter, and vanilla. Add powdered sugar and cinnamon. Candied Pecans Â¼ c. brown sugar 1 T. orange juice Â½ c. pecan halves Combine all. Spread in greased 8 x 8 pan. Bake for 12 min. at 350. Pour out onto a second greased pan, separating into single nuts. Cool. To Assemble: Place one layer on cake plate. Use about 1 c. frosting to make a rim around the outside and a circle in the middle, leaving a tunnel of unfrosted cake (will resemble a bullseye). Fill tunnel with Â½ praline filling. Repeat with second layer. Top with 3rd layer and frost top and sides. Garnish with candied pecans. Boy, Tracey, I admire your courage! The chocolate covered strawberry cake is something, too. I get the idea that your friend likes chocolate. :)

Claire, I have a friend who is a good baker. She freezes baked cake layers, sometimes for a couple of months, then defrosts & ices or frosts. It works well.

That just brought back an angry flashback. I made a layered torte? for my husband out of crepes and by the 15th or so - it collapsed. This recipe looks a lot sturdier. I like the look of your cupcakes. Nice end result with your cake too. I guess you'll be posting a pic when you are done (with a review too please).

Tracey! What you are making is very similar to a Dobos Torte (in Hungarian "Drum Cake") without the Dobos ("Drum") layer. It sounds wonderful!

If I may be so bold, you may want to take a look at the following link ad actually put the "drum" layer on the top. This is an amazing presentation and will knock the socks off the recipient and anyone else who gets a taste.

My mom has made this for me a few times as I was growing up... and I may have to make one jsut because it is unbelievable.....

How absolutely gorgeous that cake looks. But I have a silly question, that nevertheless I feel compelled to ask: how to you cut into that cake without mashing it, or having layers start squishing out from the middle or having it fall apart? The pics show such a beautifully cut 14-layer cake, but what kind of knife do you need to do that? I think even my long serrated bread knife might not be up to the task. Perhaps an electric knife? Any thoughts?

I'm not Tracey, but I do make a lot of layer cakes and I always chill the cake first before cutting it, then let the slices come to room temperature. I've never had trouble cutting a layer cake that way with my bread knife.

Tracey, that just looks amazing, your friend is gonna love it.

I did that apple stack cake from an old recipe of Elery's Mom's and it didn't crumble because the filling kind of seeped into the layers and kept them moist. Mine only had 7 or 8 layers, though, and this looks better because...well...because it's chocolate, LOL.

I want to see pictures when you're done!

Tracey your friend is going to be one lucky person and I would love to see the pictures too. On the link that you provided she also linked to some other places for this type of cake and one is from Smith Island. I love that place and have cooked many things from the cookbook mentioned. How I love the Chesapeake Bay!
