Gifts, cakes and birthday girls

OK, so I'm way behind, LOL. Ashley's birthday was June 6 and we went to dinner with Bud and Makayla. Amanda and Dave were allowed to come along to control their children. (grin) About a dozen of Ashley's friends came too but I didn't get pictures.

Here's the birthday girl:

Since our birthdays are so close together, we shared a cake. Dark chocolate with peanut butter fudge filling:

All Ashley wanted for her birthday was cash and new tires for her car. No fun, so I didn't take pictures, that'll teach her. Yeah.....

She bought me flowers, though:

And, in addition to the toaster that I posted a picture of previously, Elery bought me a meat slicer. I wanted one to slice beef or pork roasts, and we used this one to slice our home cured pancetta:

Yes, it was a great birthday but, believe it or not, I threw away the last of the cake yesterday, it never did get all eaten.

What beautiful people! "Monkey Face" and Bud are precious and growing up way too fast. But Ashley is simply stunning! She just gets lovelier as she matures. The cake's not bad either!

Lovely photos Annie!.... and yes Ashley is a real stunner....she is gorgeous!

I can't believe how Bud and Makayla keep growing and changing. Both cute and I'm sure you have a great time being their Um-Ma.

That's some cake too....definitely one for not counting calories...luscious....I'd love just one small piece please.

I'm sure you'll get a lot of use from the slicer too.

Today is my gdtr's fifth birthday. Her parents rented a ballet studio for two hours and invited 20 kids. Afterwards, the family will gather at their home for dinner. The day will cost them at least $500. They have three kids. $1500 a year for birthday parties. Every time the kids go to a party, they spend $15 to $25 on a present. Currently, two of the kids go to at least two parties a month - the third is still a baby, but she'll start going to parties, probably next year! That's an additional $80 or so a month on presents. My gkids have so many toys and junk it's...well, I'm at a loss for words. Personally, I think it's ridiculous. We are always outdoing each other with presents and venues for kids' parties. This started long ago, when my kids were little. We had cake and pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey at home, and parents said things like "Oh, how cute." Then they rented halls for their kids' parties. I know I sound like an old crank, but I like to think that gifts have meaning beyond the WOW factor that lasts a few minutes. You never know what's going to tickle a kid. I am absolutely thrilled beyond words that my 2 1/2 yo gson latched on to the sweater I was wearing one day as his cuddle blanket several months ago. He sleeps with it. I can't possibly give him anything better than that.

Thanks, everybody. I feel real good about the swimming lessons. Last summer, we (sprites and I) were sitting outside chatting about everything on their minds, and she asked me to measure how tall she was. She finally told me that she had been invited to a friend's swim party and the shallow end was so many inches deep. So we compared her height to the depth of the pool. She also wanted a description of what it felt like to be under water, did it hurt to upen your eyes....could you see? As much as I tried to make it sound like fun, I could tell that she was troubled and anxious. Turns out that she faked the proverbial stomach ache so that ahe didn't have to go. Poor thing, she's so athletic and physically fearless in everything I've seen her do. I think that will love learning how to swim and overcoming her fear. About the cake......SHE will decide what she wants to make. We've done layer cakes, buttercream frosting, she's enamoured with pastry tips, etc. I'll pin her down tomorrow so that I can be sure that I have everything.

The last few years since my kids have grown up, I've just taken them out to dinner. This year was different, though. My son was across the country, in tech school for the Air Force, so I asked him what he wanted. I ordered some sweat pants he requested through Amazon and had them sent to him. He lost a lot of weight in basic so needed something that fit. Now my daughter's birthday is this Friday so I told her I'd get her a new pair of boots since her favorite pair are falling apart. She hasn't told me which ones she wants so it may be late.

Plllog, there are no holes in the bottoms of those carriers, the cupcakes sit high enough that you can just grab the top of the cupcake itself and lift it out. The rest of the carrier is a deep plastic bowl with a post in the middle and those carriers fit down over the dowel, three layers deep. The top snaps on and there is a handle, so you can carry 2 dozen cupcakes, stacked 3 deep, without crushing any. It's very handy, and I bought it on clearance last year after Christmas. arkansas girl, my daughter tells me that Madison had some friends over the next day to play and although the cake was all gone, they ate cupcakes, so they did get eaten, they were just second choice for the kids. Too much candy for me, I didn't eat either one, but I just thought it was odd that I was specifically told that people did not eat chocolate and then that's what they ate! Annie

Wow! What beautiful eyes Ashley has. I love Bruvvers new haircut too. And that Makayla is adorable too! Hey, that little pig she's holding; what does it do?

My son had a pig that looked like that and if you squeezed it, it did something gross. hahahah!

oh my gosh - I'll echo that Ashley is gorgeous - I'm glad she kept her short hair. And I love the streaky color.

I just can't believe those babies are so big! (I think that is my brother in the photo behind Bud...)

wow, does that cake ever look good. Annie, is it peanut better between the layers and then fudge frosting? Is it regular peanut butter or a peanut butter frosting?? - wow, it's calling to me! Did you make it?

Ashley just gets more beautiful. Love her short hair cut.

I can't believe how grown up Makayla is and Bud has always looked pure boy to me. Now even more so with his big boy haircut.

Does Ashley at least acknowledge that she gets her stellar good looks from her MOM, and not her DAD? She really is quite lovely, as are the rest of your family:-) Makayla is looking very much like a 5 year old, ready for kindergarten kind of girl, is she becoming a diva at all? And I'll echo what everyone else said about Bud, with that haircut he looks every bit the "boy" of the family. Thanks for the lovely photo break Annie, it really brightened my day.

P.s. - That cake is what i dream about when calories don't matter. You made it, right?

Ashley has colored contact lenses, LOL. Her eyes are really gray/green but she likes the blue. Of course, she's really a blonde too. she loves her short haircut, but right now it's red already, a different color than on her birthday. She's 20 and I'm not going to tell her everyone thinks she's beautiful, that's for sure.

I did make the cake, the layers are the recipe from the Hershey's cocoa box, I still like that. The peanut butter filling was a mix of peanut butter, butter, confectioners sugar and vanilla, beaten until "fluffy". It was rich and tooth-achingly sweet, just the way Ashley likes it.

Shaun, I bought that pig at Linens N Things, Bruvver got a cow. They don't do anything disgusting, LOL, they are tiny flashlights and when they light up they moo or oink, respectively.

What a fun time, and that cake looks to die for! I am a fan of all things peanut butter, so that cake is about perfect. Everyone looks great and I can't believe how big the kids are getting. How does that happen!?

OH Annie, that's too bad your pig doenst do what ours does. If you squeeze it, a brown bubble comes out of his fanny. It's a beautiful thing.

Cathy! haha! Nope, my daughter bought it. She also found a frog that when you squeeze him, his tongue sticks out. Thats a collectible. NOT!!

Elery bought me a new computer a couple of months ago, Jessica. My old one finally bit the dust, I fried the hard drive AND the mother board, it couldn't be resurrected.

So, I kept the keyboard, monitor, speakers, printer, etc., and got a new processor. It has Vista and I just hate it. I wasn't going to replace the computer at all, but Elery thinks I "need" it. Of course I don't "need" it, but it's my insomnia cure!

David, I did tell Ashley you love her hair, she just smiled and said you have very good taste. (grin)

Annie, we got our new PC and a laptop right before they came out with Vista - so both came with a free Vista upgrade. I sent for them - but now I feel better that I have been too busy(lazy) to install it on either...I've heard so many people who are unhappy with it...:-(

Shaun, darlin, you never fail to bring a smile to my face - and that one definitely was an out loud laugh...a beautiful thing, I bet.

Happy Birthday Ashley!

AB, you have a lovely family, and Ashley looks gorgeous with her new hairstyle which goes so well with her oval face. Looks like a razor cut, is it?
I did quite a few of those cuts during the punk era, and I always wanted to try a similar cut, but was afraid I'd end up in the emergency room if I attemped do it myself, and never trusted anyone else to do it for me.

So Ashley wanted cash for her birthday? If it'll make you feel any better, Sammi wanted a gas card for hers - What Le F?

Makayla and Bruvver are still precious, but growing up way too fast. Quit it.

Annie, was Ashley blessed with those gorgeous teeth or was her Ortho blessed with your checkbook?? She is so lovely. I also have a similar meat slicer, just more plastic shelving than the all-metal one and I rarely use it, unfortunately, bec. it takes at least 1/2 hour to have to break it all down and clean it properly and then reassemble (all the brackets, shelf, blade, etc.). Doesn't this bother you or am I just too lazy?
