What do you always serve Christmas and Christmas Eve?
Comments (9)My husband's parents used to celebrate the English way, or what they thought was English (they're from Hong Kong). A full dinner at 6p on Christmas Eve, putting up the tree, opening presents at midnight, and then eating a full meal AGAIN at 2am in the morning Christmas Day! This really wasn't very enjoyable for me, and since my MIL worked it was pretty stressful for her, too, doing all that stuff! They would make roast leg of lamb (Chinese will eat meat in huge quantities if they can afford it!), shepherd's pie, several Macanese (Portugese recipes adapted from Macau cuisine) dishes, and one little lonely package of Green Giant creamed spinach for 8 people. Eventually over the years, they stopped doing these parties, due to ill health and just getting tired of all the work involved. I was secretly relieved, although my husband STILL misses opening presents on Xmas Eve, LOL! My family of third-generation Asian Americans, celebrates Christmas Day. We never have a set menu, as all of us, including my now-grown-up nephew and niece, are dynamite cooks and love to experiment. Although we do a mostly traditional Thanksgiving, Christmas is always different. Sometimes we do "theme" ethnic cooking; sometimes we do more traditional stuff. This year it's slow-roasted salmon and prime rib, because my nephew is anxious to try cooking his first Big Piece of Red Meat :)) I make a smoked salmon sushi appetizer that the family really likes, so I offered to do the hors d'oeuvres this time. My BIL is vegetarian so he'll do a Greek salad and we'll have a couple of desserts -- probably a tiramisu and a fresh strawberry tart with lemon curd filling. My sister is in charge of the starch this year, could be pretty wild as she approaches cooking as a science experiment! New Year's we celebrate individually. My sister and her family do a buffet drop-in. My husband and I usually make ourselves a nice festive brunch -- blueberry French Toast or Chocolate Pancakes, and then maybe rack of lamb or filet mignon for dinner....See MoreWhat Plates Do You Serve Your Stew In?
Comments (25)Hey guys (waving my hand cyberspace-style). I just wanted to follow-up with what I ended up buying. I happened to be in Macys, and by chance, they were having a weekend sale on Fiestaware, buy one piece get one free. Their Fiesta display contained a bowl in several colors, called an "Individual Pasta Bowl". This bowl had everything on my checklist - wide enough to manage big chunks of stew beef/potatoes (yet not too wide), deep enough so nothing will slosh out, they stack nicely for storage, and are microwaveable. And of course, the BOGO-free sale. It comes in a perfect yellow color for my kitchen. Actually the "yellow" I chose is what Fiesta calls "Ivory", but it's actually a soft buttery yellow, versus their "sunflower" color which is the bright yellow of, well, sunflowers. The Ivory looks very different on the Macys website than it looks in real life. The website also says it holds 32 oz. which it doesn't--more like 26 oz. if you fill it to the very top rim. I also ended up buying a few bowls in the Cobalt color, cause it'll also look good in my kitchen, and I love how the different colors look together on the table. I've found out that Fiesta makes this pasta bowl style solely for Macy's, and it is not sold elsewhere. I don't know why. Anyway, I'll link them. The customer reviews re-affirmed all the reasons why I like them. Comments (18)We are going to Dear SIL & BIL for brunch & this recipe was requsted: BAKED FRENCH TOAST Cook Time45 min Yield 6 to 8 servings Ingredients 1 loaf French bread (13 to 16 ounces) Butter, for pan 8 large eggs 2 cups half-and-half 1 cup milk 2 tablespoons sugar 1 tablespoon vanilla extract 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg Dash salt Praline Topping, recipe follows Raspberry Syrup, recipe follows Directions Slice French bread into 20 slices, 1-inch thick each. (Use any extra bread for garlic toast or bread crumbs). Arrange slices in a generously buttered 9 by 13-inch flat baking dish in 2 rows, overlapping the slices. In a large bowl, combine the eggs, half-and-half, milk, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt and beat with a rotary beater or whisk until blended but not too bubbly. Pour mixture over the bread slices, making sure all are covered evenly with the milk-egg mixture. Spoon some of the mixture in between the slices. Cover with foil and refrigerate overnight. The next day, preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Spread Praline Topping evenly over the bread and bake for 45 minutes, until puffed and lightly golden. Serve with Raspberry Syrup. Praline Topping: 1/2 pound (2 sticks) butter 1 cup packed light brown sugar 1 cup chopped pecans 2 tablespoons light corn syrup 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg Combine all ingredients in a medium bowl and blend well. Comments (12)Ours is pretty basic, glazed baked ham (NOT spiral cut) & scalloped potatoes for sure. Probably a green salad containing a wide variety of baby greens. Maybe that pineapple casserole made with chunked pineapple, cheese, I forget what else, but it goes so good with ham! A green side dish of some sort. I'm seriously considering introducing the family to the roasted Brussels Sprouts with cranberries in a reduced Balsamic vinegar glaze (Pioneer Woman). Personally, I'd be happy with just that dish, it really is that good! Oh, and dessert is always fresh strawberry pie, even though I decided long ago that there is no such thing as good fresh strawberries in Texas. As no one else here has had fresh strawberries that don't have the hard white center, they think what we have here are good. That's okay, I just make the pie, I don't have to eat it!
