scorched my soup, please help

I was making split pea soup with the leftover Easter ham last night. I had the stove up too high and it burned on the bottom. I poured the soup into another pan as soon as I realized it in hopes that the burn flavor woudn't come through. The pan I started with had a very thick layer of blackened pea goo stuck to it. I tasted the soup and it had an awful burned flavor throughout. I still have some leftover ham, and I'm going try again tonight. I don't want to ruin another pot... I'm considering buying a crock pot (to add to the list of unused kitchen gadgets and things I don't have room to store) to make the soup in. Is that a good idea? I started with high heat boiling the peas and then when they started to break down, I lowered the heat. It still scorched. I just don't understand!
