Speaking of invitations and gifts...

I was going to ask this on a fairly well know wedding message board, but the members tend to be a bit younger and I'm not sure I want their opinions. I often find myself agreeing with you ladies on matters of etiquette and wanted to run this by you.

My boyfriend (geez, it sounds silly to use that word when you're not in your 20s) and I are planning to get engaged in the next year.

One thing I would love to do is forgo the usual deluge of presents that comes with weddings. I have a stocked kitchen, linens I like, etc. We're adults and we aren't just starting out.

If we told people that their "presence is our present" in some way, do you think that would be appropriate? If so, how is this best disseminated? Word of mouth?

Have you ever had someone tell you this? My sister-in-law put that phrase on a birthday invitation and people brought gifts anyway. Is this standard?
