Wedding invitation states: 'No boxed gifts' - it this a new?

My son is attending a wedding this afternoon and he mentioned that the invitation specified "No boxed gifts".

I naively thought that meant to refrain from bringing gifts to the wedding. However my son told me that it meant they wanted cash. He's actually in the wedding party so he's probably correct and he said he's had other invitations with the same wording.

I'm still somewhat amazed - I know weddings have changed but I still think it's tacky to request money.
