Hi Lyra, we're just starting summer here, which is generally fairly dry. We don't expect any rain until June if we're lucky, July or August if we're not. I think the worst ting about losing everything in a fire is that your personal landscape disappears. Not just photos, but no more, "These were grandma's dishes, that's the picture I bought when we were vacationing in Mexico, here's the letter DH wrote me when we were dating and he was away at boot camp", that sort of thing. You lose all your history. Furniture can be replaced, but it won't be the coffee table Jimmy teethed on, the lamp that was a wedding gift... I would find that paralysingly depressing as I'm an old sentimentalist.

Oh Lydia I think what you're doing is wonderful. I am not sure the people in my DSIL Steve's life knew what a blessing they were to DD and Steve. I think you're doing fine, just be there, help with what you can and listen and pray with her!! Sending my best to your friend and lots of hugs for you both.

I hope she continues to improve. As a vet, I am very careful to give every patient a thorough risk assessment and vaccinate only for those diseases that show high risk. Even so, I still have had a few vaccine reactions. The risk of reaction needs to be less than the risk of actually contracting the disease. I never vaccinate indoor only cats for FeLV, and after a year of age I don't even vaccinate the outdoor kitties for it either. OTOH, any dog who gets groomed or boarded on a regular basis keeps the bordetella vaccine updated every 6 months. Which rabies vaccine was used in Bindi? The recombinant rabies vaccine is considered safer than the killed vaccine because of the addition of adjuvents in the killed vaccine. I am just curious because currently the hospital where I work has only the killed rabies vaccine, and I am pushing to get the recombinant one for cats.

Connie, I will definitely be thinking good thoughts for your son! "Hospitals charge more to the uninsured than they do to insurance companies..." Susan, I respectfully disagree. When I had my first lumpectomy as an outpatient at a very well respected not-for-profit hospital, the procedure was done as a "local with sedation." I had an IV going, through which an anesthesiologist administered valium. He was, of course, also on standby for general anesthesia if the frozen section had come back as malignant (it was benign). When I got the itemized bill from the hospital, imagine my surprise to see a charge for 1.5 hours use of the general anesthesia equipment. I called the hospital's billing department and was told that (paraphrasing), "The general anesthesia equipment doesn't last forever. Someday it will need to be replaced, and it's very, very expensive. So, all insured patients who enter an operating room whether or not they use the general anesthesia equipment are billed for its use. This is because many patients who do have general anesthesia do not have insurance that can be billed, and we have to get the money from somewhere, so we bill everyone that has insurance even if they haven't used the equipment." I called my health insurance company to let them know that they shouldn't pay out anything on the GA equipment charges and was stunned at their response -- "Why should you care? Your policy covers it." When I protested that my policy should only cover it when I actually make use of the service, I was again told that this is standard procedure for hospitals and insurance companies. Sheesh. Having said all that, I agree that Connie's son should talk to the hospital about reducing his bill.

Same here.........my guess is that you'll feel like a new woman after a bit of rehab. Everyone I know who has the surgery now-a-days (as opposed to many years ago) has amazing results and a new joy in life.

Thank you all; I'm feeling the positive vibes.

Surgery is at 8:30 AM and should last about 1Â½ - 2 hours.

I'm a little bit nervous;hope I can sleep tonight.

I'll be back on the boards when I come home.

Again, thanks, it means a lot to have friends wishing me well.

Mona - more positive thoughts and vibes coming your way for your surgery and quick recovery. You'll do very well, everyone I know who has done it wishes they had done it sooner. No pain, no gain, right??? If you didn't get any sleep, it will just make it easier on an the anestesiologist. LOL

Good luck Mona! My dad had hip replacement surgery last Monday. I am amazed that they can cut out an old joint and put in a new one in 35 MINUTES! His surgeon had a group of six surgeries that day - 3 hip replacements and 3 knee replacements. It's really neat how they stay together in a group for their physical therapy (they get some one on one time too), etc. Modern medicine is great!
