Please send good thoughts to Toodyay

Hi all, Toodyay is a small town near me which is similar in its history and "touristyness", to coin a phrase. I enjoy visiting there and it has lots of interesting little craft and antique shops to visit, museums and the like.

They're starting the New Year minus 38 homes, which were destroyed by bushfires in the searing weather we've been having. As far as I know no human lives have been lost, though some livestock didn't make it; the fires went through a hobby farming area so stock numbers weren't as high as they might have been if it had been a commercial farm.

A pretty crummy way to start a new year, so I hope you can send them some good thoughts and get a positive vibe going.

Of course.... A wild fire has to be a very scary thing....
I hope the town soon recovers.

I want to thank everyone for their love and support for our 'kids'. You are all wonderful! Who knew GW would bring us so many friends? Ianna- Thanks, they are cute, but no adoptions, for now :) I'm not really sure what causes colic (I'm hardly an expert) but I know that all vets and horse owners fear it...and it has something to do with the horse's digestion being blocked. If they lay down and roll around, their intestines can twist and they die. Very sad! My mom lost her horse that way, some years ago. She boarded her horse with a friend and it came on very suddenly. So, Mandy is running around a lot, drinking, eating a little and we hope her appetite improves. If it does, she should be just fine! Every day, she looks better :) Oh, the water heater was sparking (or so it seems) because the boys came up to drink and were dipping their noses in really quick....and out again. Not their usual behavior at all. So, we got a new heater the other day and it's much better. We even saw Mandy taking a drink today, so we know they're using it again. Thank goodness the vet suggested checking it! So, take care and I hope you all have a great day! Don't forget tea today (Conversations forum at 4pm ET) if anyone wants to stop by :)

Oh Lydia I think what you're doing is wonderful. I am not sure the people in my DSIL Steve's life knew what a blessing they were to DD and Steve. I think you're doing fine, just be there, help with what you can and listen and pray with her!! Sending my best to your friend and lots of hugs for you both.

Connie, I will definitely be thinking good thoughts for your son! "Hospitals charge more to the uninsured than they do to insurance companies..." Susan, I respectfully disagree. When I had my first lumpectomy as an outpatient at a very well respected not-for-profit hospital, the procedure was done as a "local with sedation." I had an IV going, through which an anesthesiologist administered valium. He was, of course, also on standby for general anesthesia if the frozen section had come back as malignant (it was benign). When I got the itemized bill from the hospital, imagine my surprise to see a charge for 1.5 hours use of the general anesthesia equipment. I called the hospital's billing department and was told that (paraphrasing), "The general anesthesia equipment doesn't last forever. Someday it will need to be replaced, and it's very, very expensive. So, all insured patients who enter an operating room whether or not they use the general anesthesia equipment are billed for its use. This is because many patients who do have general anesthesia do not have insurance that can be billed, and we have to get the money from somewhere, so we bill everyone that has insurance even if they haven't used the equipment." I called my health insurance company to let them know that they shouldn't pay out anything on the GA equipment charges and was stunned at their response -- "Why should you care? Your policy covers it." When I protested that my policy should only cover it when I actually make use of the service, I was again told that this is standard procedure for hospitals and insurance companies. Sheesh. Having said all that, I agree that Connie's son should talk to the hospital about reducing his bill.

Six weeks ago, one of our local police officers was gunned down and died after arriving at the hospital. It was simply a routine traffic stop in the wee hours of the morning. We are a small town in Central Mass. 42-year old father of three and just an all-round wonderful person, so well-liked. The perpetrator was caught and killed in a face-off with police, local, city and federal. He was out on bail for former crime, with a long history of offenses. It devastated our town and the entire area. And "bringing him home" (from Boston's med.examiner) was the same phrase used, which definitely is heart-breaking, as was watching the police escort through town . I still cry.

I saw some headlines about wildfires in Australia, Colleen, and thought of you, hoping you were far away from them.

Of course I'll send good thoughts, to Toodyay and every place affected. Be careful and stay safe.

Yes, I read about the wildfires, too. Sending good thoughts to the people of Toodyay -- Toodyayans? At least they haven't lost the very cool name of their town. I do hope they can rebuild. I thought of you Colleen, and Daisy when I read this. Very sad.

I guess you are already into 2010. I saw pics of your celebration on tv here in the US.

Hi Lyra, we're just starting summer here, which is generally fairly dry. We don't expect any rain until June if we're lucky, July or August if we're not.
I think the worst ting about losing everything in a fire is that your personal landscape disappears. Not just photos, but no more, "These were grandma's dishes, that's the picture I bought when we were vacationing in Mexico, here's the letter DH wrote me when we were dating and he was away at boot camp", that sort of thing. You lose all your history. Furniture can be replaced, but it won't be the coffee table Jimmy teethed on, the lamp that was a wedding gift... I would find that paralysingly depressing as I'm an old sentimentalist.

I'm with you, Colleen. I'm terribly sentimental about things and the memories they hold. I would be devastated to lose the things I hold dear. People say "oh they are just things" but really they are so much more.
