What a terrible time to lose your job, but it's happening to so many. He might want to check his insurance as it usually lasts a month after termination.

I will definitely keep him in my thoughts and hope he gets the job he's checking out today.

Should have said he lost his good job in August, took a temporary/as needed job in Sept (no benefits) and now is completely not working. He's been without insurance way too long and his daughter needs it too! There is another story there of course but long story short, he needs to get a job with benefits.

Yes, good thoughts. I also want to add that he should do some bargaining about that medical bill, if he hasn't already. Hospitals charge more to the uninsured than they do to insurance companies, and they're almost always prepared to lower the bill when asked. An automatic 35-50% discount is not uncommon. But you have to ask.

I hope he gets/got it! I know how hard it is. My DS went over a year without a job, got a part time seasonal, & when that ended, it was another 3-4 weeks before he got another. He is lucky that he was hired full time, but so far no benefits. It was supposed to be part time deli, but was hired as a shift leader in training, full time! The pay isn't great, but it's the most he's ever earned per hour, so he is happy. I'll keep your DS in my thoughts.

I am adding DS and your family to my prayers. I finally started a new job after being unemployed since September, so I still remember the stress first-hand. With the global economic conditions being as they are now, being without a job can really play with the psyche. I wish the best for DS. Tell him to keep his chin up as the right one will come along - hopefully closer than 50 miles away. If this one is the right one, it will happen. Saying prayers that this one is it, and that all of the things to go with it are in right and perfect order.

Susan, I respectfully disagree. When I had my first lumpectomy as an outpatient at a very well respected not-for-profit hospital, the procedure was done as a "local with sedation." I had an IV going, through which an anesthesiologist administered valium. He was, of course, also on standby for general anesthesia if the frozen section had come back as malignant (it was benign).

When I got the itemized bill from the hospital, imagine my surprise to see a charge for 1.5 hours use of the general anesthesia equipment. I called the hospital's billing department and was told that (paraphrasing), "The general anesthesia equipment doesn't last forever. Someday it will need to be replaced, and it's very, very expensive. So, all insured patients who enter an operating room whether or not they use the general anesthesia equipment are billed for its use. This is because many patients who do have general anesthesia do not have insurance that can be billed, and we have to get the money from somewhere, so we bill everyone that has insurance even if they haven't used the equipment."

I called my health insurance company to let them know that they shouldn't pay out anything on the GA equipment charges and was stunned at their response -- "Why should you care? Your policy covers it." When I protested that my policy should only cover it when I actually make use of the service, I was again told that this is standard procedure for hospitals and insurance companies.

Sheesh.

Having said all that, I agree that Connie's son should talk to the hospital about reducing his bill.

Actually that is true in the sense that almost no insurance company pays nearly what the hospital charges and the hospital will usually write-off the difference. When a patient has no insurance they are charged the full amount so it's worth it to try to bargain the hospital down to what an insurance company would have paid.

Yes, My office visit is $200... but the contractural agreement with my insurance, the insurance company pays $45... and the rest is written off.... but if I didn't have insurance, i would have to pay $200. My blood tests were over 500 dollars... insurance paid 150. yikes!
