Thanks for your concerns. This group is so sweet. I was able to get my GW fix in the ED - but hard to respond on the iphone.
Turns out not as serious as we thought - originally, they said he had 3 broken ribs and were concerned with internal bleeding.
He does have a concussion, so we are tethered together for the next 48-72 hours. And lots of "road rash"
His pedal broke off the spindle - which should not have happened with the high end pedals and no weight limit on the pedals.
The good news - his helmet worked - we will have to replace the "brain bucket" but that is minor league.
In true spirit, my DH wants to ride tomorrow - but he is going to be mighty sore!
So instead, we hope to make it to the Paella fest (take out as he will not want to be around crowds that could bump into his ribs)

Goodness, what a rough couple of months! Glad to hear no very serious injuries. And glad to hear he was wearing a helmet! He's going to feel it tomorrow, try not to make him laugh.

Hope you get a chance to relax a bit soon, you've more than earned it!

Between job, DM long distance, DH, and kitchen - well, I gave up on the thistle, weeds, and poison ivy in the yard... There is always next year...

Glad to hear he is OK too. After losing my mom to a traumatic brain injury from a fall - here one day and gone the next - head injuries and potential head injuries scare the h*$$ out of me. And yet I really don't like wearing a helmet... it was so much more fun to ride in the days of "the wind in your hair." Wishing him well and a speedy recovery.

So glad to hear he will be OK!! The thread title scared me!

Road rash isn't as serious as internal bleeding, but it hurts like heck. Poor guy - he did get pretty banged up. Glad it isn't worse. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Adding in my wishes for a speedy recovery. Don't know if this would help or not, but my mom and stepdad swear by Arnica gel for bruises and aches. May be worth a shot - I'll bet that Mr. A2g isn't going to be feeling any too wonderful tomorrow.

Wow, just now seeing this post and glad to hear that the injuries weren't real serious. I must add though, to be careful with the road rash though and be aware of keeping it clean to avoid infection. What seems like a small thing can develop into a staph infection if not careful. This happened to a friend of ours and since then I am very careful with scrapes and open wounds. Hope you are both out pedaling again very soon! Helmets are amazing!

Arnica is the secret of the Yoga and Pro football worlds.
It helps, somehow, eliminate bruising and some of the pain that goes along with concussion injuries (when someone is hit, not the head kind) and overstretching injuries. It's found at all health food stores and frequently now, in the drug stores. Look for the one that has the highest percentage of actual Arnica. I find the creams are the easiest.

On that note, I'm also sending healing energys. Such a serious drag!!
But I sure love Paella!!

Reiterating the messages about Arnica, it is amazing at reducing bruising and soreness. My kids both have tubes of Arnica gel in their nightstand drawers for applications as needed during football season, the fooball coaches have tubes in their sideline bags for application to injured players during games(the player won't go back in, but it will speed the recovery process).
A word about concussions- monitor his fluid intake- concussions can get the complication of severe dehydration(the kind that sends you back to the ER with vomitting and simply stunning head pain) his body needs extra fluid to heal and he won't feel like drinking.

Sorry to hear about the mishap. I know the pain of having bruised/cracked ribs- very uncomfortable trying to sleep, cough, sneeze or even laugh. And they take 3-6 weeks to heal.
My favorite line to use when someone bumps their head is "so did you knock any sense into yourself." Seriously though, glad to hear he was wearing a helmet and didn't suffer a fractured skull or more serious TBI.
Hope you will both be riding the trails again real soon.
p.s. feed him lots of oatmeal and muffins. Served my house guests your baked oatmeal this morning before they all left for the airport. They loved it and since you don't even get a tiny snack on most flights any more, it should keep them satisfied until they get to their destinations.

Hope he gets well soon! Though maybe riding again today might be too hard with his ribs ie very difficult to turn and being bent over to the bars smooshing his sharply painful ribs together?! Maybe he's trying to "get back on the horse" so to speak??

Good advice on the arnica and there's also arnica pills if putting the gel on the road rash isn't appealing. Heh, I still have souvenir college parking lot gravel in my knee and other scars from road rash oh these many decades ago so paying close attention to the healing and scar minimizing truly is important.

It must have been heart-stopping for you to see it happen! Take care of YOU too for stress.

Mr a2g is doing pretty good today. He still has a headache and still doesn't remember the accident but remembers most of the other events of the day.

He realized riding was not an option - mostly trying to deal with the road rash today - I have some bio adhesives but not the larger sizes - so they keep leaking.

Mtnfever - I was not with him - but new something was wrong when his cell phone called me. His buddies on the ride figured out how to use his cell phone to call me.

I have used arnica for years but need to go get some more.

Just catching up on GW - saw this and am chiming in with more good wishes for your husband & relief that he was not more badly injured. Best to both of you.

Oh no - I hope your DH is feeling better soon. The concussion, depending on the severity, can take a long time to get over. The results are often headaches, tiredness, forgetfulness, short-temper, short attention span, etc. Do stay on top of that. Patience will be the key.

My sister was in a biking accident a couple of years ago and along with some other injuries she suffered a concussion. It probably took her 6 months before she was feeling somewhat normal. When the paramedics arrived on scene they told her if she hadn't been wearing a helmet they would be taking her to the morgue and not to emergency. We are very lucky. However where we live helmets are mandatory.

Sorry to hear about your sister and glad she is doing better.

Our hospital has a level 1 trauma center. Initially, DH was classified as level 2 until they ruled out nternal organ damage. They pushed on his abdomen and he yelped but turns out it was due the ribs.
Because of his post traumatic amnesia, he had to be checked by rehab before dc.

By the time he was checked, he could remember everything but up to a couple minutes prior to the accident and everything after arriving at the hospital.

In any case, he has a follow-up appointment with the post head injury clinic. They also went over the problems to expect.

He still is getting episodic headaches but they are getting better!

In any case, not much action on the kitchen this weekend,,,

Happy to learn he will be OK. My DH broke 3 ribs 3 years ago while sailing. Unfortunately he has broken the same ribs 3X since then! Mr. A2 will need to be careful as they will be easier to break going forward.

Most importantly his helmet was on and provided protection. I hope he heals quickly.

Yup he broke 10 bones 7 years ago. 6 ribs,collarbone, scapula and 2 vertebrae! Car jacker ran him off the road!

He rode the Camino de Santiago Pilgrimage 8 weeks later! It was ugly but inspirational!

Goodness, a2gemini, you have been through the ringer lately. I'm glad your DH is okay but how scary! I was run off the road years ago and even though my bike sustained more damage than I did (fall bent the frame) it really shook me up. I wasn't comfortable sharing the road with cars from then on. I'm glad he doesn't share that anxiety. A speedy recovery to him!

So glad he is ok and had his helmet on. I've known of more adults who take bad spills than kiddos. Makes me cringe when I see families out with the kids in helmets and the parents without them! Hope he's back riding soon.

Bahacca - It is a longer way to fall for adults! I cringe when I see people wearing their helmets bonnet style!

I bring DHs old helmet when I fit helmets for kids. They are always impressed with the dent in his helmet!

DH is going to try to go to work today. His headaches are improving. Yesterday we went on a walk together which was quite pleasant.
Still managing his drooling wounds. I put on super band aids (hydro colloid) but he is leaking through them on the sides.

Oh, a2, so sorry to hear bout Mr a2g's accident! Glad to hear he's steadily improving. Take good care of him, but don't forget to take care of yourself! Seems you've been doing a lot of nurturing others lately. A labor of love, to be sure, but emotionally exhausting, too. Hang in there!

Just keep adding things to plate...New job, new kitchen, long distance mom problems, DH, etc!!!
I am not getting my usual exercise so getting a bit out of shape and might need a new wardrobe...
