Bread Machine suggestions?

I have one now that doesn't work very well. I had a Toastmaster that I killed using it so much. Now I would like to buy another one. One that works well but isn't expensive. Any suggestions? Preferably one that makes multiple weight loaves.

Tami... who got her food processor and loves it! 14 c. Hamilton Beach, cause it was that or a $150 KA that I couldn't afford!

What do you have? I have a cheap Breadman from Target. It's okay but makes a fat vertical loaf that I don't love but otherwise it works fine.

I have a zojirushi and I love it. I make all my bread, I let the machine knead it and then bake it in the oven. It's a workhorse, I've put up to 8 cups of flour in it and it chugs right along. I never bake in it, though.

If you want a cheaper model, the Zo isn't that, I think the model I have costs around $200.00. I know Dad had a Regal and it was a piece of carp, but he replaced it with a Sunbeam and it was OK, I think it made a one pound loaf which was enough for he and stepmom anyway.

If you have not damaged the non-stick surface by using metal on it, or the machine hasn't overheated it, my guess is you just got an example with a crappy or defective non-stick coating. If Crisco won't stop the sticking, there is no way oil will, so don't bother with that. If the machine is new, simply return it to the store and get a different brand or contact the manufacturer and raise hell. If it is old, toss it and get a new one. Trying a different brand is recommended, too. But if you get a new one and it sticks too, then you will have to remove the super-glue from your bread recipe! LOL!

Quick Breads in the Bread Machine?

AM, my Zo has a special setting for quick breads, so I'm assuming it's a quick mix, no rise and a bake cycle. I haven't used it because I just don't bake that many quick breads. I think whether you allow your kids to use an oven and at what age depends on the kids and on your "worry level". I used the stove and oven way before I was 12. Amanda did too, but she was a very responsible and meticulous child. Ashley was/is prone to being distracted. I've come home more than once to find something turning to charcoal in the oven because she forgot it was there and went somewhere with a friend, or (more likely), that she baked something but forgot to turn off the oven and it had been heating, empty, for several hours. sometimes she turns the oven on, gets distracted and decides not to bake, but forgets to turn the oven off. And, because I am a worrier, I worry all afternoon that something is in the oven or on the stove and I'm going to come home to a house full of smoke, which has happened more than once. Anyway, if you have bread machine recipes, I'd try one of those and see how the machine works. I do have a couple of bread machine cookbooks, I can check when I get home tonight. Annie

Hi Mare, I checked my manual that came with mine, as well as online. The AllRecipes Challah got 5 stars from several reviewers, if that's any consolation. Here is the recipe for 1.5 loaf. Bread Machine Challah Rated: Prep Time: 5 Minutes Ready In: 3 Hours 5 Minutes Submitted By: Suzy Cook Time: 3 Hours Servings: 12 "Challah, a yeast egg bread, is made especially easy with the bread machine." INGREDIENTS: 3/4 cup milk 2 eggs 3 tablespoons margarine 3 cups bread flour 1/4 cup white sugar 1 1/2 teaspoons salt 1 1/2 teaspoons active dry yeast DIRECTIONS: 1. Add ingredients to the pan of the bread machine in the order suggested by the manufacturer. 2. Select Basic Bread and Light Crust settings. Here is my Black and Decker Recipe from the manual. This is exactly like my white bread recipe only with eggs. It makes a 2 lb loaf. 2 eggs, room temperature 1 1/3 cup milk 2 tbsp oil 2 1/2 tbsp sugar 2 tsp salt 4 cups bread flour 2 1/4 tsp yeast

The yogurt shouldn't be a problem reacting with yeast. Yeast actually works best in a mildly acidic environment, which is why ascorbic acid is often mixed with dry yeast products. To improve the rise of breads containing wheat germ and whole wheat flour (which contains wheat germ), I always add an acid ingredient to counteract the gluten-damaging effects of glutathione in the wheat germ. Bacteria (in yogurt and also present in bread dough made without yogurt) produces those tasty acids in bread dough that improve the flavors of bread when we refrigerate it. The acidity already present in sourdough starters help sourdough breads keep longer, inhibit mold growth and also slows staling, and you'll see the same qualities in breads made with yogurt. -Grainlady

What I have now is a Sunbeam from Walmart. It also makes a fat vertical loaf. It is supposed to make either a 1# or a 1.5# loaf, but it doesn't switch between them like it is supposed to and I can't tell which one it's set on. I have tried making both sizes, and it still doesn't come out right. It has been a couple of years since I have tried to use is, because I got so fed up with it, so I can't tell you anymore what was wrong with the bread when it was finished.

I'm on my second Oster, this one is at least six or seven years old. Like you, I killed my first one making bread for everyone I knew..LOL. It makes 1 to 2 pound loaves...1.5 too I think. I only use it for kneading though.

Another longtime Zojirushi fan. A fan who makes all the breads they eat and nearly all of them are made in the Zo. So I'm not a hobby bread baker. If I don't make it, we don't eat it - hamburger buns, hot dog buns, English Muffins, sandwich breads, Artisan breads, cinnamon rolls, dinner rolls, etc. Like Annie's, mine is a "workhorse".

The Zo is what they use in the King Arthur Flour Test Kitchens for making their dough. They say it does a better job than a stand mixer (which tends to aerate dough) OR by hand. They used to show a side-by-side test making the same whole wheat bread in the Zo and with a stand mixer in their catalog. The Zo loaf (baked in the oven, not the bread machine) was over 1-inch taller than the stand mixer loaf.

It's also one of the only machines that has the "umph" to make a loaf of 100% whole wheat flour bread, which is the type of bread I make in mine every week with freshly-milled flour. Most machines suggest NOT using home-milled flour and most won't make a loaf of 100% whole wheat bread.

I've adapted my old favorite recipes to the bread machine.
