Decorative borders and tile patterns

Hi, I am new to this board and have done a search but can't seem to find what I am looking for. Please forgive me if this has already been addressed.

We are redoing most of our flooring on our main level. When looking at tile I really liked when it was done in 2 or 3 different sizes. Then we looked at a house and they had a decorative border between the kitchen and family room and a matching border around the island. We thought we might like to do this as we will have different flooring in different rooms (office - hardwood, family room - carpet and the entry way, kitchen/dining area - tile) and we thought this might be a good way to transition to the new flooring. At the tile store they suggested a pinwheel pattern with 2 different size tiles for the floor and a border of 3 to 4 rows of 1" tiles between rooms. The colors coordinated really well but I am worried the border will get lost or that it will be too busy. Anybody tried anything like this. I am a "visual" person and just can't picture this... If anybody has any pictures or websites to send me to that might help. Thanks!

It goes wherever you want it to go! Usually, that's somewhere between 36 and 48", but I've seen decorative stripes as high as 6'. The biggest thing to think about is you want it to be as visible as possible. That usually means with the least obstructions possible. You don't want switches and plugs falling into the stripe. You also don't want it cutting out for the vanity, or anything else, if possible, and if it DOES have to cut out for say, something like a mirror, you want it to COMPLETELY cut out, rather than having to cut the stripe around it.

Tile border / towel bar placement

If your towel ring/bar is above your accent tile, then your towel will hang down and cover your tile. (Ask me how I know this.) You'd actually see more accent tile if you mount your towel bar/ring on the accent stripe. Plus, if you crack a tile, it's a 1x1, so easy to replace. I'd decide on a best place for the accent tile, so it won't be obstructed by countertop clutter or cut in half by a window. Then decide on the best place for a towel bar. Then adjust each a few inches if needed. But no, there's no rule.

I think saving the $1000 might make me smile when I walk into the new bathroom. :-) We have no border in the master bath and a vertical stripe on one end wall in the hall bath. In our previous home, we had no border in the master bath even though the tile went up to the ceiling. We did have a border in the kids' bath, but that was done in 1986! I think they're still "in style", they've just changed - no longer just 2/3-border-1/3 -- now the borders are vertical, diagonal, zig-zaggy, horizontal, etc.

Try lestile@nycap.rr.com It's called L'Esperance Tile Works. I found some beautiful tiles on ebay, and found them through that. Their brochure shows beautiful Victorian tile. Some come in1X6 in tiles. They do whole fireplaces, so they could probably help[ you design it, too.
