I've owned old homes and have felt their limitations! OK, new tile (though I like the look of what you have now) so limitiation on switch/receptical placement is not an issue. Normal height for switches is 45" to 48" above the floor. Yes, medicine cabinets tend to get filled. Now is your chance to enlarge your space. In my opinion, your medicine cabinet looks dated when compared to the fixtures. Here's a thought, open up the wall and recess a more spacious cabinet (can be wood with wood or glass shelving) with doors on either side of the basin. Projecting into the room maybe 4-6" you would have additional storage (possibly for some extra towels) and a place for electricity. It would appear that you have approximately 2 feet to the right and 3 feet to the left. Remove the existing medicine cabinet and replace with a hanging mirror, installing a convenience outlet below. I believe this would modernize and improve functionality of a small bath. Can you double-hang towels on the wall behind the door - face cloths/hand towels atop side-by-side bath towels, then a robe hook on the back of the door itself? Here's one more thought. I know you like the look of your basin and its' coordination with the water closet. Are you aware that the pedistal is a separate piece from the basin? You could install the basin into a counter-top with a cabinet below. As people are taller now, many are being installed up to 36" high (vs. the old 30" standard). A cabinet below would provide you wilh significant additional storage and a place for electricity. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Hi, I am not a design expert by any means. I'm in the middle of a bathroom remodel started in January. It's going slow, but nearing the end finally. If it were my bathroom, I would want a storage cabinet in between the tub and vanity area that was accessible from the front and perhaps even from the tub itself for towels. But there are those that are more swayed by function and those that are more swayed by the way something looks. I am going to choose function first even if I have to sacrifice what might "look" best. My bathroom that I am remodeling is very small also so I am trying to get storage wherever I can find it including recessing areas in the wall. As far as your tile wainscott, I think if your bathroom is divided into "areas"...the tub area, the vanity area etc, you can do it however you like, especially if you tie things in somehow. I did a tile wainscott and had to stop it on a wall because I have a pocket door for the hallway inside on one end of it (the last 3' of about a 12' wall). Mine will look like a step down from 43" to underneath a recessed towel bar niche and recessed cabinet which is 20", then step down to whatever size tile baseboard (probably 3 or 4"). But hopefully others will weigh in here and help you out because I know there are some very talented people on this site:)

Standard adult towel bar height is indeed 48". For kids, 36" is considered standard. However, you should take into account placement of switches, plugs and HVAC vents. Of course, these heights can vary to taste, or if you want to "line up" with something else in the room. And, if you're renovating, don't forget to put blocking in the walls for a solid mount through the drywall or tile.
