Building a Step out of Hardwood Planks?? Please Help!

Well this just gets more and more frustrating!

Having finally decided on Walnut floors with a teak finish (as shown in the 'Walnut Teak' post) we have encountered a new issue.

We need one or two steps to go up from the dining area to the kitchen but don't know what to make them out of. As we are transitioning from the dining room wood floor (maple) to the kitchen floor (Walnut) what do we make the step out of??

This is throwing us for a loop. I think it would look best to do it in the Walnut, but is it even possible to make a step out of the wood planks or should we be making the step out of a solid piece of wood? If so, what type of wood do you suggest?
