I just want something cooked on the grill. The top of our grill is down about 4' into the snow pile & DH's is not going to dig it out anytime soon! Usually, we don't have snow on the ground so this North Pole stuff is driving us crazy this winter. After we had about 3' on the ground...one night we got lightening, thunder, & downpours turning the already slushy snow into a glacier. Then, it snowed more - and more - and more. We've paid our handyman so much to plow the snow this year he's taking his family to Florida next week for a vacation!!! :(

On a positive note, we've had robins in the yard for a few days already. They're 3 weeks early.

Spring is a long way away here but I am looking forward to anything that didn't spend 2-3 days in a truck or train to get here!

Watermelon. Is that a spring thing or more of a summer thing? It really is more summer but I think they start appearing here sometime in April. I love the stuff. If I had to pick one food which I had to eat every day in addition to whatever else I wanted, it would be watermelon.

Oh Tricia: grilled food sounds so good! I found a chicken kabob recipe the other day - I think it was Ann T's blog - that sounded delicious! Count me in for grilled food too.

I'm a tomato fanatic, but I'm also really missing good zucchini. I keep buying it from the supermarket and then being disappointed with it. Hurry up, Spring!! I swear I smelled it coming the other day.

Here there will be no outside planting on President's Day, we still have 4 or 5 feet of snow on the ground and that's where there aren't any drifts. It's supposed to be in the 30s next week during the day,ll melt, but the ground won't thaw here enough to plant even peas for at least another 8 weeks.

Asparagus would be nice, and fresh strawberries. Of course, here aspaagus comes in May and strawberries after that, so like Sharon/Chase, it's going to be a while before anything is available locally.

We might get the first peas and radishes from MagicLand in May, they plant in hoophouses and so they get a month or so jump on the rest of us.

lowspark - When watermelon is ripe, in season - not Spring, their peak is in late Summer - peel, then whir in blender, sans seeds, and then fill ice cube trays with the juice/pulp. Tuck into the freezer. Mid-winter, when the yucky time hits, defrost to room temp in footed glasses and enjoy with a spoon. Elegant luxury.

I plant watermelon for the future. When they are ripe, lots of other fruits are too. Fresh is great but later - like ugly winter - they taste like summer.

Tomatoes! I can't wait for some good flavorful tomatoes instead of these dirt-tasting red balls we have now!!

I think I look forward to peaches and of course spiced jelly beans. Veggies, it would have to be corn on the cob!

Tomatoes are a late summer fruit here. So I won't be having a fresh local tomato for months. Same goes for corn on the cob.

What I look forward to in the spring is fresh picked asparagus and local spot prawns. The spot prawns are only available for 4 to 6 weeks starting early in May.

I've been eating grilled asparagus for the past two weeks at work. Our cafeteria serves all kinds of grilled vegetables and the asparagus is excellent.

We have a 60" snow pack here so my own asparagus won't be up for a while. I took some from my sister's farm before she sold it. She bought the property in 1982 from a 96 year old woman who had lived there her whole life. The old farmhouse that was there was built in 1870. On one side of the house there was a huge patch of asparagus. At first I thought asparagus that was 1" thick would not taste good. OMG! I was wrong. It is delicious. The woman that sold my sister the property said the plants had been there since she was a little girl. I guess that makes my asparagus plants at least 125 years old.

My spring "foods" I look foward to are a "feast for the eyes" during the Yellow Month (April). Daffodils and forsythia.

I honestly can't think of anything locally that is harvested in April. Or May.

All except fiddlehead fern. It only happens a few days in the spring. What a treat to look forward to!

My jalapeno plant that was badly chewed up and eaten by my cats during the winter is putting out peppers! Habeneras have a nice bunch of flowers but I've not spotted any baby peppers yet. For some reason my cats are not so happy to chew on the habeneras.

I planted asparagus again... hope it took. Mushrooms are on the way in a few weeks. Still a foot of snow on the ground so a couple pages on the calendar left to go... they turn so quickly these days!?!

And we can get most "spring things" all year around too....but it's not the same as that picked a mile away..
Yes, rhubarb....and morels!!

Here it will be spring when the rhubarb and the ramps are ready. I love them both and can't wait!

Hopefully my neighbor will make a haul on the morels this year again, too. He found bucketloads of them on his property last year. (Our land is adjacent to his and we have never found a single one! Go figure...)

Tomatoes, corn on the cob, watermelon and the rest are all summer treats where I live.

Speaking of summer, I am hoping my Nanking Cherries will finally produce more than a handful of fruit this year. It's their third year so I have my fingers crossed!

Peaches. I want to make them into ice cream, candy them, roast them, make a peach-and-garlic soup. I'm dying for a really good peach, that won't have me checking my credit limit.

A lot of what has been listed is delicious, but it only appears in the summer here in Utah.

So "Spring" food I'm looking forward to: RHUBARB! From my garden. I'll be able to pick in May or early June (depending upon when spring arrives), and then it will be rhubarb pies, muffins and sauce.

Oh, Jo, you just changed my answer. I was going to say the Oreos with the green mint filling.... but I change my vote to Cadburry Eggs too!

I too am waiting for rhubarb. I've got strawberries in the garden now, but not enough ripen at one time for a pie, so as soon as I see rhubarb, I'll make a strawberry-rhubarb pie. Yum!

I'm just looking forward to spring. In has snowed here twice in the last 5 days. Unusual for us at this time of year.

I would have added rhubarb to what I am looking forward to but I satisfied that craving last week. I pulled the last of my rhubarb out of the freezer and made a rhubarb pie.

I am looking forward to halibut season opening in the next two weeks.

Ann, Halibut is so expensive here it's insane.

Shaun, it isn't cheap here either. But the price should go down a little bit when the season opens again. Right now it is $17.99 a pound.

I'm looking forward to fresh lettuce, spinach, radishes, green onions. I will plant as soon as I get home which will be the first of April. Should be harvesting by mid May.

Annie - One year I had all of the above planted the end of February and it was a beautiful crop. We garden with raised beds and they do warm sooner, that is if there isn't 2 feet of snow still on the ground.

I will dig fresh horseradish from the garden as soon as I get home. We make cocktail and horserasdish sauce with it. I always look forward to that in the spring.

Fresh-picked anything, but mainly we're craving greens. I have a some mixed greens in a pot under the grow light. Another week or two...

I want fresh beets out of Mom's garden. I LOVE beets.

Strawberries, which have a season that lasts for a nanosecond in June around here.

I agree with Ded, STRAWBERRIES. PA is just NOT a good strawberry growing state. Our springs seem to be either droughty or rainy, too hot or too cold, and neither is good. And rhubarb, if I can ever find any. Wish I knew where I was going to be living from year to year so I could plant some! Asparagus is good too, but it doesn't come in fresh from the fields here like it does in MI!
