Can Hardwood or Laminate Be Installed Over Brick Floors?

My kitchen has brick floors which appear to be full brick and not pavers. (Original to the house which was built in the mid-1960's). The adjacent family room is carpeted. The rooms are separated by a half-wall, so the carpet and brick meet only at the doorway between the two rooms. I plan to replace the carpet with some type of wood or laminate flooring and would like to continue that flooring into the kitchen (may or may not remove the half wall). However, DH does not want to go to the expense of tearing out the brick floors. Can wood or laminate be successfully installed over brick? (There is approx. 1/4-1/2" height differential between the brick surface and the concrete slab under the carpet.) Thanks for your advice.
