I had a very pleasant day. It began with a visit the day before from a friend who brought with her some delicious chocolate profiteroles for morning tea and a pretty gift. Then on the day itself, I woke to an email from a friend who wished (amongst other things) that my Meals on Wheels would be edible! It was.

A quick call from my son, several calls throughout the day, then a long chat with my son in the evening. The parcel from him hasn't arrived yet, but I expect it today. Better still, he's coming up here for a brief visit in 2 weeks.

It's been a busy week.We have a scheme in my part of the world which helps the elderly and disabled to cope with living alone - keeps us out of the nursing homes a bit longer! They do an assessment of each client's needs for security, safety and general well-being, and do their level best to fix things. The client pays for any parts, but the labour (the most expensive bit) is free up to a certain yearly limit.

I had a leaky tap, so they sent someone to fix it, and he fixed 3 other taps as well. It cost me the grand total of $12! All week I've had men come and go, and there are more expected in the near future, including today. Lots of little jobs I can't manage for myself: cleaning out the guttering; fixing the toilet cistern; checking the smoke alarm; replacing screening on the security doors; attaching lock guards on the doors; fixing a wonky seal on the freezer door; replacing sponge on my mop. And the list keeps growing longer. They'll even come out to change a light globe whenever needed.

Having all these men call on me has set my little old heart all a'flutter, and I've enjoyed the company - though they work at a rate of greased lightning. My life is so dull, since I'm pretty much housebound except for regular trips to and from hospital, so this has been a quite an exciting week for me!

Happy birthday Daisey! It sounds like you have had a good birthday far! I wish I had a bunch of men coming in to fix stuff for me! It's a lot more fun to watch a handyman fix stuff than to do it yourself.It's wonderful that they offer that type of service to help. And it is even better that you only pay for parts. I paid $100 to have two leaky shower faucets fixed last year because I could not figure out how to get the darned things apart! Now I know how.

Oh Compumom, you made me laugh! It could be a while yet before I start cooking.

I got some things called Toasties from a coffee shop a while back. They're simply fancy sandwiches, cut extra thick, with interesting fillings like Chicken and Guacamole, which are served to you toasted. I bought a couple to freeze, and toast myself at home.

Well - it worked just fine the first time. I put the Toastie, frozen, into my small cast-iron frypan on a fairly low heat, and with a lid on, to allow time for thawing before it browned. It took a while, but it was nice. So I tried it a second time.

This time, I walked away and clean forgot about it. (This happens frequently, since my short-term memory is shot to pieces. I get side-tracked so easily that I often forget where I'm up to in making a cup of tea!)

I only 'remembered' the Toastie when I noticed black smoke permeating the study, far from the kitchen. Exit one Toastie.

So much for my return to the kitchen, m'dear! I am definitely NOT to be relied upon to work in there with absolute safety. So I'm still getting Meals on Wheels. Sigh.

And yes, one of these lovely men has replaced the battery in my smoke alarm!!
