Just jumping over from the Cooking Forum to see how you are doing in this awful heat wave in Australia. It was 125ÃÂ° in some parts of your country.

We miss you and your wonderful recipes.

Thank you so much for your concern. I rarely visit the Cooking forum these days, and only occasionally pop in to Herbs. I cannot cook for myself these days, and while I still have a few herbs in pots, I've transformed my garden by covering it in its entirety with concrete pavers! All because of continuing ill health.

I'm surviving the heat with the help of air-conditioning, but it has been very enervating. I'm lucky that I don't live further inland where temps have soared so much that they've had to increase the map codes!

Glad to hear you are all right. You certainly have "interesting" weather, and don't do things in a small way.

I'm sorry you can't cook or work in your garden any more, I remember how much you enjoy it. Take care and KEEP COOL.

I am a slave to the weather channel. We have it on first thing in the morning, and I always look at the weekly outlook- highs & lows. Once the temps start staying above 40 or so at night, I start the plant-out (this is a personal thing, as I see that recluse uses 30. I don't have enough info to know which ones are hardy enough to take the lower temps, so I just use 40+) If the temps dip after that, I'll toss a cloche over them for the night. I also like to use the 15-day forecast over at accuweather.com, but obviously if the weatherman can't get it right for 2-days out, it's unlikely that they really know the 15-day outlook. But I'm only looking at the temps, so knowing that the earth's orbit is relatively stable (wink), I can rest assured that they may at least have THAT part pretty close. Planting out: It depends how thickly I sowed them. Unlike recluse, I "sprinkle and go" with many many containers. This might mean entirely too many seeds in a container, but I've found that it makes for a good show when planted out HOS. If I got super-good germination and a totally green container because I sowed WAY thick, I'll do WAY small HOSs. Some of my annuals like Marigolds and Zinnias I don't do HOS, but most things I do. They can duke it out after they're in the ground. HOW you plant out is very much relative to how detail-oriented you are. If you're very specific about how you do things, it may throw your whole world into an uproar to try and do a plunk 'n run technique. Of course, depending on how many containers you got out there, you may find yourself plunking, running, and drinking heavily due to the stress of HAVING to do it at some point ;)

Oh Daisy, your garden looks so much like mine, at least the brick and fence and general shape of it. I had my brick walk and retaining wall rebuilt and most of my plantings went to plant heaven, so I am starting over with an almost clean slate. I think I will use your's as a model for mine. I wish I could post a picture but i'm at work and we're restricted from doing that. I'll try to remember to post it later and maybe you can give me some tips. I'm in a much colder climate and could not keep many of your plants going. They would be annuals for me. I've tried Lambs Ears a couple times. They are supposed to grow here, but they shrivel up for me. How fortunate you are to have such good gardening friends. I would love to come and putter in your space. Wish you weren't half a world away. Best of luck with your health and I hope you are back out playing in the dirt one day soon.

It's not the sheet rock that's giving me the problems...it's the baseboards. I think the PO's let their dogs run wild...or something. And then they just painted over the gouges...so I had to sand them before I even started to get the patching compound to hold. (And I am using 120 grit.) Patching with Ace Wood Patch. (two thin coats...not one heavy one.) Used a sanding sponge AND this new tool I found---3M's Sandblaster. LOVE that thing. It has a handle and everything. I have had tendinitis in both wrists for years...(since The Boy was a baby--and he's 20) and something about patching/sanding seems to aggravate it. While I'm not a pro...I'm no newbie. In fact, for serious settling cracks, I don't even use patching compound. I use Krack-Kote. Stays flexible and moves with the house. It can't BE sanded...one has to get it smooth at the start. Linked below...I highly recommend it for houses that have a fair amount of movement. (We have a lot here--clay soil and periodic drought/deluge cycles.) Thanks for the tips...it's good to know I'm not really doing it wrong...it's just my bum wrists. I've decided to farm the painting of the open staircase out...but I've got all the prep work just about finished...so I'm hoping it won't be heinously expensive. I think they would be no more hassle than ones on the outside if I understand the question. Maybe post a pic since I would not like inswing casement windows in most cases. There are retractable screens for casement windows maybe check that out.

Good to hear from you, Daisy. I noticed you were here only on rare occasions and hoped all was well. I wish you all the best with your health and for some cooler temperatures to head your way. Perhaps this photo of sunrise earlier this week will help. I did no photoshopping of the colors - the photo is this blue. It is a winter view from my place with the snow and colors giving it a cold and perhaps for yourself, refreshing look.

Batya, *grin* - it wasn't that hard to be up. Sunrise on the morning the picture was taken was at 7:42 am and I think I snapped the picture around 7:15. We have a lot of darkness and lack of sun here at this time of the year. The day (sunrise to sunset) is currently only a little over 9 hours with most days being overcast and cloudy - no sun to be seen. It can get people pretty cranky and depressed.

So seeing a clear sky and sunrise like this was exceptional and especially beautiful.

I hope all is still well for you, Daisy. We just started winter here - snow last night and temps in the low 20's (F) tonight. It's always a little sad for me when the days get shorter, and here in the Pacific Northwest it stays cloudy and wet all winter whether we have snow or not. I just got my dahlia tubers put away in peat moss for the winter, and I'm ready to start working on next spring's garden in my cold frame. Stay well and let us know occasionally how your life is going - at least you're getting sunny and warm now!

So nice to be thought of, and not forgotten! I'm ploddin' along OK. I look in here from time to time, but I keep a low profile these days.

We've just been through another heatwave - hottest November on record. Thank goodness for air-conditioning! Summer started yesterday, so it should be a scorcher. I don't mind the heat - it's the sub-tropical humidity that knocks me out.

Weather has gotten crazy. You have the hottest November on record, Buffalo (a city only about 2 hours from where I live) got 7-8 feet of snow in a 2 day period in November. Buffalo and the rest of the region get snow pretty regularly in the winter season but not like this. It was crippling and some people died. But after all the snow, temperatures were warm enough in just a couple of days to melt the snow. Wild, wild, wild.
