Fault Code FE 30 for induction cooktop

Dear experts: My Miele induction cooktop stopped

working after a power outage (possibly a power surge) and gave the above fault code. The technical help forwarded me an e-mail which suggested the following remedies:

1) check the incoming voltage (how do you do this?)

2) check the connection terminal allocation (again...how do you do this?)

It goes on to say that the "secondary voltage of transformer-rectifier may have been too high (primary voltage greater than 300 volts)

Can anyone explain what this means and how I might check out the above remedies. The third option is to buy new control panels which could run me $1000 to $2000!!!

I can't help you specifically, but I really wonder how they expect you to do that yourself? Is it no longer under warranty?

Shortly after (less than 2 weeks) getting my Kenmore induction stove it started throwing fault codes (can't remember the number).

The service technician had never seen the induction model before, spent a long time on the phone and then decided they will replace all the boards in the stove! I said no way -- talked to my salesman, got a replacement stove and have never had a problem since.!

Suggest you repost this in appliance forum including the model number and do a search for that number in the search block near the bottom of the thread list page.

These instructions are obviously meant as starting hints for a qualified technician you might call in for repair work. Miele cooktops usually have special fasteners requiring special tools to gain access to the interior.

The first economical first step would be to find someone with enough smarts to check the power is completely off from the double circuit breaker involved. Then gain access to the junction box where the cooktop wires meet the house wires and check they are all firmly connected.

I don't have a mirrored one. I have the all-black 36-inch induction cooktop. It was installed in 2008. The first 3 years or so, I had no problems. After that, I've had each of the magnetic coils beneath the sides replaced as they either stopped working or started producing error codes. In the past year or so, the control panel periodically does not respond. The board for the control panel was replaced too but the hasn't fixed the problem. This happens at least once a week. Sometimes only one hob responds, Sometimes none. I have a Max Burton plug-in unit (the one recommended by the induction site) just in case I can't get it to work at all. It's pretty random and it continues to happen after all magnetic coils and the control panel were replaced. It's really frustrating. The few tricks that I know are 1. Make sure cooktop is completely clean of all spots/spatters. 2. Remove all items on cooktop. Turn off. then try again. (Nuisance if you've got a few pans in the middle of dinner preps!) 3. Turn off at circuit breaker. (I usually wait at least a minute before turning back on.) 4. Try the powerboost setting to finish your meal prep. Sometimes it works when the other controls don't and you are stuck trying to finish making something. Not ideal if you need low heat but might work. It's driving me crazy and while I used to love it, I hate it now. There's a chance that gas lines will be installed in my neighborhood soon so I'm holding off on making any changes for now. For anyone with a new unit, keep track of your original invoice and review the warranty. Tusseydreamer, Of course you can put a warming drawer underneath an induction cooktop. In terms of the brands Miele vs. Electrolux you should be good with either. I imagine that the Miele cooktop will come in at a higher price, but I believe this model might have less clearance needed when putting other appliances below it (I think Miele comes in at 4 inches). Just to be safe, I'd double check the specs on both units. It sounds like you enjoy "getting down" with your appliances. I'm certainly not trying to talk you out of the Elux Speed Oven, but the thermador as a new steam oven that's really sick. Steam settings, convection, and steam plus convection. Obviously this unit differs from a speed oven in that it doesn't combine both microwave and convection at the same time, but it might be a cool addition to your kitchen. Both Bosch and Kitchenaid make really good dishwashers. I tend to lean more towards Bosch simply because of an internal water heater as opposed to a heating element found in a kitchenaid. Although having said that, I think that the Kitchenaid KUDE70FXSS has an internal heater instead of a heating element. The frig you selected is really cool. Sophie, I think you solved it! I shortened the story in the original post, but actually my nanny was the one cooking this morning. My best guess now is that she must have turned on the wrong hob when she wanted to heat up the egg pan. The tea kettle got so hot the enamel melted and the cooktop turned it off (we saw FE 44 flashing - the signal for overheat/turnoff). Then, as it cooled, the glass cracked. I came in at most 5-8 minutes later and the tea kettle felt mildly warm, but definitely not hot. It's possible that the cast iron had time to cool by that point, though. The confusing part is that she was able to cook eggs on the hob right next to the tea kettle and I can't believe that she didn't notice that the controls for both hobs were activated. She seemed genuinely perplexed, though, and I don't think she was covering up anything. Also, I had no idea that an empty pan on an induction stove can overheat so easily. I think that should be better known if it's such a problem. Lesson learned, even if we don't know the exact sequence of events.

I drew up the plan I proposed above, with adjustments as needed based on the additional information you've provided. I assumed that the fridge wall is 144" not 143" and gave the extra inch to the fridge portion. I also estimated the window at 36" wide (based on the photo). If these assumptions are incorrect, you'll need to adjust accordingly. I kept the fridge wall and oven cab in their current locations. Sink is shifted from its current location, which I realize requires trenching into your slab but thankfully, the sink is fairly close to its current location so costs should be fairly minimal. I put the wine fridge in the island. That location is more convenient whether you're in the family room, dining room or breakfast nook. It can be accessed without crossing into the prep zone, which is a plus. I tried to figure out how to get stemware closer to the wine fridge but that was a no-go. I shifted the cook top out from under the window and to the left. This has multiple pluses, IMO. One, you can vent the cook top with a hood, which is more efficient that a downdraft and won't require increasing the depth of the counter to fit a downdraft (that would steal space from the aisle between oven and fridge side, which is already less than recommended). Two, it's less expensive. Pop-up downdrafts are easily over $1K. You can get a nice looking, functional chimney hood for less than half that. An undercabinet hood is even more reasonably priced. Three, having the largest expanse of counter between wall ovens and cook top moves your primary prep zone from one side into the center of the kitchen. You'll take fewer steps going from fridge or pantry to the prep zone. The aisle between table and island is a bit on the lean side, which is why I recommend placing the chairs as shown in the drawing. Mock it up to make sure you're good with this, though. Now's the time to make adjustments. Keep in mind that the recommended aisle behind seating is 44" (see the drawing I posted above). It's fine to have less than that on the window side because that's not a primary aisle. I suspect that the island curve will need to be softened so that you can reach the center to clean it. Again, mock it up and see what works for you. I estimate that you'll have room for 3 stools but the final shape will determine that. Allow 24" per person so that people can sit comfortably with enough room for elbows and legs. If you need another seat, you can reduce the width of the bottom right cabinet and extend the counter overhang towards the pantry. I didn't add uppers above the 12" deep cabinets in the nook area. As drawn, there's a nice balance of cabinets and open space on that wall. It also gives you the option to add a window. I listed suggested kitchen organization - blue for clean-up, table setting, green for prep, cooking, baking - to get you started. Feel free to adjust to suit how you work. I found it helpful to mentally make a meal using a new lay-out to see what worked, what didn't and how I could adjust it to make it function better. Think about how it would work when you entertain, clean-up, make snacks, etc. You can amend the plan to keep the cook top under the window but if you do, I strongly encourage you to go with a hood over the cook top for reasons stated above. See the link mamagoose posted above to see kitchens with this set-up. The dimensions in red show you what you gain with a smaller diameter table,either a 42" round or square table (set at an angle).If you need additional storage, you'd have room for cabinets against the kitchen/family room wall. ETA: Ignore the dimensions and shape of the square table. I don't know where my head was but what I drew isn't a 42" square table. It's much smaller than that. You could probably do a 40" square table and be okay but a 36" square table would work better. Not sure that's a better solution, though. Mock it up with blue tape. I know you have some, lol. I tried a few other ideas but they required structural/slab work and I didn't feel that the trade-offs were worth the additional expense. HTH!

I have the same FE 30 problem on my KM5733 Induction cooktop whenever it's circuit breaker/isolation switch (in my house's fuse box) has been turned off and then on again. I have turned in back on after waiting a day or longer (figuring it needed to reset itself?) and the results have been hit and miss and I have had no idea why it would work sometimes and not others. Needless to say, I've trolled the net looking for answers and Miele online support is useless (unless you're ok with shelling out loads of cash to have a technician come by) and I still haven't heard back from them after lodging an enquiry.

What I have discovered from this and other forums is that these units do not like being attached to a power source which has a voltage significantly above the amount stipulated in its specifications (for my unit it's 230 Volts). After reading this I used a voltage meter to measure the voltage in one of the power outlets in my house (I have a really cheap meter I'd bought a while ago at an electronics retailer). Sure enough it was above 260 Volts which is totally beyond the range it's supposed to be for where I'm living.

The thing is, I know the unit works just fine provided it has been turned on and it doesn't get the initial FE 30 error (it's almost like you have to get past an initial voltage check and then once it's going everything is ok). If the voltage is at an "acceptable" (whatever that may be) level when it's turned on, it will turn on and then stay on even if the voltage goes up afterwards (which it obviously has done during the time from when it was last switched on until recently).

How did I get it to work this time? well I thought of ways to reduce the voltage to the unit and came across all sorts of stuff on the net including powerbox voltage reducers, optimisers, blah, blah... I thought this is total rubbish and I'm going to ring the power company and complain about the voltage being so high when it's not supposed to be. I then thought back to my old high school physics days and remembered that there's a relationship between voltage, current and resistance. I then thought the voltage to the induction cooktop (as well as to all the other power outlets/circuits in the house) is likely to drop if I plug in and turned on a lot of high resistance electrical appliances.

Sure enough, when I turned on the kettle, toaster, clothes dryer, computers, televisions, electric oil heaters, lights and dishwasher, the voltage in the power outlet I'd been measuring went down from 260 to 235 volts.

I then turned on the power to the induction top back on and it turned on and with no FE 30 error!

I boiled some water to make sure everything was working ok (it was) and then I turned off the induction top and all of the other devices I'd switched on.

Still no FE 30 error! Great.

I double checked the unit by turning it back on and boiling water again and it did it with no problems. I then turned the unit off and measured the voltage in the power outlet again and sure enough it was back at 260 Volts. Hurray!

I'm now going to ring the power company and make a complaint...
