Old film movie camera question

I hope someone here is old enough to answer this question. :-)

Twenty years or more ago my family used a Eumig sound movie camera to take films of the kids. I don't know if it was 8mm or 16mm. I recently discovered that we still have the camera, and there appears to be film in it. Can I just open the camera and remove the film? Or will that expose it to light and ruin it? I can't remember what the deal was with movie film...did we expose it, rewind it, and get it developed, much like 35mm photography? If so, I don't know how I'm going to get the film out, since the camera no longer works. Or do you think the film is ruined by this time anyway? The camera has been in a very dark place.

Thanks for your help!

Susan
