What are you making for the Super Bowl?

Whether you are hosting or attending - what are your favorite foods to make and/or eat on Super Bowl Sunday?

We have bee invited to a couple of parties, but I am leaning towards staying home - it never fails that when we go to a party I never get to see the game (or the ads) and end up disappointed. I decided to fix that this year by turning down all invitations and having our own family party. Needless to say, since there are only 4 of us, I am not cooking 10 different things, so I need to choose the menu very carefully.

Inspire me! I am having a tough time narrowing down the multitude of choices!

Thanks in advance!

We are just staying home, as usual, but the kids expect a fun spread, because I set that precedent years ago and they look forward to it. Must haves for them include:

-layered taco dip with tortilla chips

-cream cheese with cocktail sauce and shrimp on top with crackers

    -cream cheese-pineapple cracker spread.

(I also have some bbqed pork I could haul out, but I'll probably end up saving that for a Valentine's Day appetizer.)

We usually do chicken legs with different sauces (I don't like to do so much work to get as little meat as with wings), but this year I have a turkey thawing, so we'll probably have turkey sandwiches for the 'meal' in between snacks. ;-)

    These are some of the eats we are preparing;

Cheese & fruit tray with Pina Colada dip
    Peach cobbler
    Pound cake
    Ice cream
    Rum punch

    wine
    Sodas

We look forward to the Superbowl each year.

What's Happening at Your House for Super Bowl Sunday?

    Q

    Comments (40)
We'll be cheering for the Patriots!! We are going to a friend's house to watch it on thier tv. I will probably bring aztec bean dip, yum, with tortilla chips. We won't be watching Tom Petty though....a few years ago we started a tradition that a leftover christmas tree gets burned during the half time....let me tell ya, they burn pretty well by Feb. Its pretty funny, the boys all stand around the tree in the snow and make attempts at "lighting" the tree, and then eventually whoosh...and half-times over. GO PATS!!

What are you making for the Super Bowl?

Thank you for the follow-up, Becky. Still, I'm inspired to come up w/ a roasted chicken pasta bake since you mentioned the dish up thread. I've come up w/ a pasta & veggies bake that the family loves and I'm thinking that I can incorporate chicken (maybe chkn tenders) to move it from just a side dish to being an entree. I've been lightly steaming broccoli & carrots and mixing the veggies w/ cooked rotini. Pasta & veggies go into a glass baking dish & gets drizzled w/ olive oil & seasoned w/ grated romano, fresh garlic & liberally doused w/ that no salt seasoning (house brand stuff from Big Lots, of all places!) Pop into the oven for 30 minutes or so. Maybe I could lightly saute some breast tenders and top the pasta dish w/ the tenders & finish in the oven? I doubt I would have thought to expand on the dish w/o your having mentioned the recipe you were going to try. Ci

SuperBowl Party - what should I serve in my steamer?

    Q

    Comments (12)
My first thought when I hear "steamer" is some kind of Chinese dumpling as well! Probably because that's what I use mine for mostly! A good "cheat" for them is to just cook up some ground beef or turkey (I don't eat pork, but the traditional methods use ground pork) flavored with minced garlic & ginger, some sliced scallions and chopped water chestnuts, some soy sauce, sesame oil, maybe a touch of five spice powder - whatever flavors you like - then get a package of those refrigerator biscuits. The regular one's not the huge "grand" ones. Flatten out the biscuit, put a tablespoon or so of your mixture in the middle then bring up all the sides around and pinch it at the top to kind of seal the dough, then steam them. They're more filling than using a traditional dim sum wrapper, but not everyone has access to those. I think the biscuits are a "cheat" that works very well. Have fun at your party! Lisa

Super Bowl Non-Fans, What Are You Doing?

We never watch the Superbowl. Or the Canadian version: The Grey Cup. Unless Calgary is playing and even that's not a promise. It's just another Sunday for me. I need to shower and get my bedding washed. I just took 12 eggs out of the oven. I baked them scrambled with onions and ham in large muffin cups to take one a day for breakfast, to work. They're just cooling on the counter right now before I pop them out of the cups. Other than that, not sure what I want to do. I bought a bucket of paint to paint my hallway, but I need to be in the mood to do that. I'm so not in the mood....

Tomorrow I'm making Artichoke Spinach Dip to take to a party with friends. One person is bringing soup, the hostess is providing salad and beverages and the rest of us will bring appetizers and desserts. Always a good spread!

I always make my favorite guacamole which consist of 1 serrano pepper sliced, 2 avocados, 1 and 1/2 limes squeezed, pinch of cumin and coriander, 2 garlic gloves crushed with salt, chili powder, chopped fresh cilantro, finely minced white onion, and add skin of tomato if you need more guacamole. Salt and pepper to taste and refrigerate covered for 30 minutes.

I'll be making Guy Fieri's jalapeno boats filled with Italian sausage and three cheeses. Along with some guacamole and chips. Pair that with a couple liters of wine... Burp.

Well I am not sure if we will have company and hate to make too much munchies;)But will anyways, I have the chex mix made, ranch dip, bacon cheese dip, cheese, meat and salsa dip done and need to get a few more things going. I am not really motivated and need to clean before the week gets going and things get crazy. We have conference basketball this week so will have games at least 3 days a week. We will probably go to at least one game otherwise we won't get to see Dan until late and the kids won't see him at all. Need a kick in the bottom to get up and get things going.

We're just having a few neighbors over for the game. Doing a Mexican thing:

    Beef tacos/burritos
    Turkey tacos/burritos
    Black bean chili
    Salsa
    Guacamole
    Lars' bean dip
    Chips
Salad or some type of veggie (still working on that one)
    Margaritas
    Red Apple Sangria

Don't wanna make too much since it will only be a small group. I am not a football fan, so I'm just here for the party! LOL

Here at my house the Super Bowl is just another day. I don't get excited about it and neither does my family. My hubby doesn't even watch football games. He would rather watch old war movies. I am so glad that he doesn't get excited about football. It makes life much easier to deal with.

Just the two of us non-football fans in this house today. We will have the game on, just because, but its not a big thing for us.

Ken did make a request for a particular dinner tonight, however, so I guess in a way we are celebrating after all! Porterhouse steak, brandied mushrooms, onion/blue cheese gratin, sauteed spinach and well those of you that know me know that of course I'm making a salad for Ken also, LOL. Leftover cream cheese brownies from yesterday for dessert, if there are any left by that time, dang they're good!

We had DS and family here last night to stay overnight because we are close to the airport - they left at 6:15 a.m. to go to Mexico on vacation. Talking about when they get to the condo and meet up with the other 2 families how they'll all be watching the superbowl. 5 y/o Marley says "why would anybody want to watch football when you can wear your new bikini and swim in the nice warm ocean". (She is over-the-top excited :)

We are not football fans either, in fact Daylilly's DH and my Dad coudl be the same guy.

Instead, we are turning on Animal Planet starting this afternoon at 2 PM, central time to watch the Puppy Bowl. they set up a small staduim playpen and dump pups in to play and it is a hoot to watch.

Dinner will be a Giambotta of chicken and hot Italian sausage, so cooking is easy tonight.

    Happy Birthday Mr. Shaun!

We're having bbq chicken wings, nachos, pizza, and ceasar salad...hubby's request!

Unofficial holiday in my family :>(

I volunteered to play with the babies during the game since I don't have a dog in this fight. Pulled pork
Beef Chili with Ancho, Mole, and Cumin recipe offered by RR
    Rum cake
    Mexican Fudge appetizer
    Cheddar & Ale Dip w/chips
Black Bean and Corn Salsa Salad

    Chicken wings
    Nigella's New Orleans Slaw
    BBQ sausages
    Pizza
    Dip and veggies
    Chocolate Cup Cakes
    AnnT's Cream Cheese Danish
    Apples with Caramel Creamcheese dip

Might drop the BBQ on the sausages and make corn chowder with them instead.

I wish the game was in the afternoon - invited to a party but it's just too late for us these days! lol

But, in the spirit we are having:

Buffalo Chicken Wings and Honey BBQ Wings (both BJ's - lol)
    Cindy Mac's BBQ Shrimp
Dishesdone Guacamole Salad (can't wait to have this!)

DH got a selection of Irish beers. I will try one or two:)

Everything sounds great, but I wanna go to Woodie's house! OMG that sounds decadent and save one of those brownies for me! I'll bring the vodka! LOL!

Interesting that a lot of people are serving wings... I heard a clip on the local news that there are TWICE as many wings sold on Super Bowl Sunday than any other day of the year! LOL! I did my part and picked up a dozen for the guys.

I was looking for Guy Fieri's jalapeno boats filled with Italian sausage and three cheeses and got side tracked into the following, which will be just perfect for my family party..... I am doing the beef and the shrimp for tonight, but you can bet this is going in my Football Food file for future use - it just sounds awesome!

And in keeping with everyone else's sort of Mexican theme, I am also making guacamole using idratherbecooking's recipe above, BBQ Chicken Chopped Salad (another Gur Fieri thang), chili lime almonds, tequila lime salsa (jar from the farmers market), and I got little brownies from the bakery for the kids dessert.

"Just about my favorite thing to do for tailgating: You take some tinfoil and fold it over in four layers, about eighteen inches long by however wide the foil comes in. Make two of these sheets of foil that are extra thick. Then take some quality sliced roast beef, some onions, a little bit of chopped garlic, your favorite barbeque sauce and a little bit of Worcestershire sauce. Make a boat out of one of the sheets of tinfoil, lay all of the ingredients down in it, and then put the other sheet over it and fold the corners up, rolling the sides around tightly. Now youÂve got this little, portable aluminum foil gift. You donÂt have a grill with you? No problem. Throw it on the manifold of your truck when you arrive at the game and in twenty minutes youÂre going to have yourself some nice heated-up barbeque beef sandwiches. Grab some turkey, some lemon juice, throw in some sour cream, onions, sliced jalapenos, a little Pepper Jack cheese and do the same thing. Grab some shrimp, some lime, butter and wedges of potato, add a little Old Bay seasoning, toss in some green onions and cook it a little less than the other two and youÂve got a nice little shrimp boil. IÂll make four or five little tinfoil packets like this. You get them going, then slice them down the top like Jiffy Pop popcorn, put out some nice ciabatta bread or sourdough rolls and let people dig into it. That right there is a winter winner. "

I hope those that are interested in the outcome enjoy the game, those who have bought a box in a pool win a quarter (ot the half or the whole darn thing) and those who dont care have someone intersting to talk to between commercials LOL!

    Let the AD WARS start!

oh wow wow WOW! delicious sounding stuff! DH is traveling, so Will and I are having a "non-superbowl" party...We don't have to put up with hours upon hours of pregame stuff leading up to it - LOL.

So his request? dumplings. I am making peppi's chicken and dumplings and he's requested creme brulee for dessert (i know - he's 10 yrs old!) but I don't know if I will get to the store for creme.

I'm also in the process of painting - after stripping wallpaper - my dining room - the color? Cardamom...:-) It was that or martini olive.

I wish the game was earlier - or that I lived on the West Coast...I think I could get into it more...

    Stacy

Stacy, cardamom - I am imagining reddish soft brownish...? I likie. My DR is Rosemary Spring. LOL

What, is there like a 20 hour pre-game?

Hi Maggie. I've missed you and everyone here. :-)

    How are those beautiful children???

It's kind of a caramely color. yep, reddish soft brownish... a very warm color that should change lots according to the time of day. rosemary sounds beautiful! I would have gone for the marrini olive if I didn't have sooo many green rooms already.

My house is 100 plus yrs old with tons of wide woodwork, and it's all a very warm wood tone - it was kind of challenging to try to find something! I wanted red - but the more I tried, the more it was clashing with the warm tones of all the wood (wood floors too)...I am pretty pleased with this - other than the fact that I wanted to be a bit brave, and I'm not sure that I was...

yeah. from my recollection - at least 20...We finally have a more than single digit temp day - so Will was outside for a long time - and there has been no tv on!

Kids are good, thanks:) I, however, I'm loosing my marbles:D

I love it. Sound yummy and look at you stripping wallpaper! I put that next to a root canal on my list of things I don't want to do! Good Will got to get out!

I'm back on the computer googling how to cut an avocado...teehee I am sure that is a paint color, too!

oh yeah....wouldn't that be the ideal job? naming paint colors. all foodies would do a great job - except me...mine would be "burnt toast" or "flaming pizza" or "dry lasagna" or "basil that I forgot to water" or "pancake turned too late" LOL!

Well just to let everybody know I went to the White House web site and wrote an e-mail asking what the menu was for the Superbowl party. If I get an answer I'll let you all know!

Well, being a Pittsburgher living in Pittsburgh most of my life (except four years of college), I will be eating like a Pittsburger in anticipation of our sixth Super Bowl win!

Just for me, DH, and two 9-year-old girls so I'm not making too much:

Chili cheese dip served with Frito Scoops
Ham Barbeque Sandwiches made with chipped ham
    Salad Bar
Giant Eagle giant chocolate chip cookie that says "Here We Go!"
    Assorted beverages

We're not into the heavy drinking that goes along with most football games and parties aroun here so staying home and making it a family night is ideal for us.

I can't wait for the commercials. DH wants to see Springsteen. The girls are just curious about it all.

The last Super Bowl the Steelers were in was three years ago. DH was at the game in Detroit. The girls were little and we ate hotdogs!

I just now opened this thread - I thought the Superbowl was NEXT week! I got a clue that it was going on when I heard yells from my next door neighbor. I had my kitchen window open because it was too warm inside, and the neighbors have their door wide open. Their door opens into a patio that is exactly opposite my kitchen - they do not have a door that faces the street.

I made waffles this morning, and I was thinking of making crêpes for dinner, but then I realized that they would be too much like the waffles. I'm not watching the game, but I might turn it on at half time, although I don't know if there is a good reason to do that.

    Lars

Lars, Bruce Springsteen is playing at half=time. That is a good reason to tune in. That is about all I care about. Bruce is about my favorite performer and I remember the 4 hour concert I went to in Ann Arbor in 1980 or thereabouts. Unbelieveable show. I will never forget it.

OMG! I love the Budweiser commercials that just aired i.e. the Clydesdale fetching then the Clydesdale going after Daisy.

Just me here...not a pro ball fan.
So far the menu is Scotch on the rocks...I had a huge lunch after a church meeting, so dinner will be whatever I dredge out of the refrig....likely a big salad as there is lots of that stuff....and one ripe avocado.
Not a fan.....but being in Iowa, I can't help but root for Arizona and Warner....the Iowa boy.
    Linda C

Personally, my fav commercial so far is the Doritos one..... We all cracked up at that!

And Bruce is rocking the house!

    Alexa

Alexa, That's DH's fav too. I missed it and onlt saw the guy on the windshield.

I like the conan o'brien commercial best so far.
We had grilled maui maui and tuna, lemon walnut pasta with sugar snap peas and grape tomatoes and goat cheese bruschetta. Hubby is grateful in a duh! way, that we didn't have wings, chili or nachos like the rest of the regular world. As though I would make that kind of food - but I don't make that kind of food becuase he doesn't like it!

We just finished our superbowl dinner of Ann's high heat roast chicken (my first ever!), rice pilaf and corn. Certainly not your usual football food, but for the two of us it was great! We had our nachos earlier in the afternoon, so we didn't miss out on ALL the junk food! :)

    Enjoy the fourth quarter everyone!

    Bri

We had cheese! Aged Vermont cheddar, baby wheel of munster and monterey jack. Tortilla chips with salsa con queso, mango and peach salsa and spinach ranch. We followed with little neck clams and giant king crab legs with clarified butter. Finished with Honey BBQ wings and chix nuggets for the kids. Had beers and Limoncello [ I bought in Sin Maarten last October]for the grups. Have dishes to do for mom at midnite.

Had a bunch of mex ready to go but the small crowd was satiated. It was just my inlaws and my dad. Dad wasn't into having too much fun without my mom. Anyway inlaws are asleep upstairs as is DH so I should boogie!

    I Love Appetizer parties!

What an ending! I was actually dozing during the last quarter and then BOOM! Wide awake!

Congrats to the Steelers and their fans and condolences to the Cards.... but it was one of the most exciting 4th quarters of the season!

    Alexa

Well, we had a few people over and hubs and I made Shaun's "Pattie's Baked Chicken Wings" and they were a huge hit! Very good! I made a batch of Tropical Wing Sauce from Tricia's "Tropical Hot Wings" and that went with the wings wonderfully.

I also made Southwest Egg Rolls (can't remember who's recipe) and they were very good too.

The rest was the usual...chips & dip, hummus & veggies and Ann T's Sangria!

The kiddo asked for pigs-in-a-blanket and that's what he ate. There was popcorn and root beer. And I had Triple Mocha Brownies (with almonds (toasted and sprinkled with sea salt) instead of walnuts). Those were good.

We have steamed and spiced blue crabs, steamed and spiced shrimp, coleslaw, etc. All good.

It was an excellent game and a very exciting 4th quarter!

We are huge Steeler fans - we made sure that we were done eating by 4pm because our stomachs were so nervous, we couldn't eat after that :) We had:

    Vegies/dip
    Cheese/crackers
    PA Dutch ring bologna/Pepperoni
    Cold Crab dip
    Shrimp Cocktail
    Clams Casino Spread
    Hot Artichoke/Spinach Dip
    Homemade pita chips
    Roethlis-burgers
    Homemade pierogies
    Fudge Brownies with PB frosting

Everyone stayed overnight after that emotionally draining game and got up early this morning to go home - oldest DD had to drive over an hour to get to work from here and youngest has a 3 1/2 hour drive back to college. We are glad that they are still big fans - it's something that gives us an excuse to do a lot of things together as a family :)
