My mom loved to eat it but hated to make it. The job fell to me. :)

I had it for the first time about 10 years ago - a friend made it for my b'day. Never had it before then, probably because the wafers never lasted long enough (with all chocolate lovers in my family) for my mom to make it!

I've seen the recipe and pics on the box, but use the wafers to make the crust for my choc cheesecake--yum!

This is one of our favorites! Try using rum extract in the whipped cream instead of vanilla....Oh, my, goodness!!!

Easy to make, and a favorite in my house growing up. The whipped cream makes the cookies soften a bit, so they become more like cake than cookie wafers.

Try the same dessert with flavored whipping cream on the inside, perhaps add cocoa, or almond extract, to the whipped cream.

Sorry about that...the hardest part of the recipe is finding the wafers. Look on the top shelf of the cookie aisle.

It's only four ingredients...the wafers, whipped cream sweetened with a little powdered sugar, and vanilla. Or, as I posted above, try rum extract instead of vanilla. Yum!

You have to let it sit in the fridge for several hours before cutting to allow the wafers to soften, become cakelike, then cut it on an angle to achieve the stripes. Very, very easy, no baking. And it will keep for several days in the fridge.

For one of my Thanksgiving desserts, I used the recipe on the box of Nabisco gingersnaps that called for a bit of canned pumpkin mixed with vanilla pudding to be spread between the gingersnap wafers. Then the whole thing was covered with homemade whip cream (the box said Cool Whip, but I wanted to use the real thing). I thought just the kids would eat it, but everyone gobbled it up, quicker than the pumpkin and apple pies. Next year, I'll be making two of the cookie rolls.

We used to call it "Icebox Cake" and it was a favorite. I haven't thought of it in years, but will now be looking for those wafers! And buying two boxes-one for eating, dlm-that was always an issue in our home, too, lol!

Yes, I love it and made it several times in the last year. The last time I made it I followed this recipe and it made a prettier cake.

How large are the cookies? Are they bigger than Oreo cookies?

Is the cake in that photo larger than the recipe makes? The recipe says "7 cookies side by side in a circle, keeping 1 cookie in the center," so that means the diameter of the cake is three cookies.

The original recipe on the package of the Nabisco Famous Chocolate Wafers calls for one package of cookies. The recipe I posted calls for 2. I wouldn't try to substitute Oreos. You would need to remove all the cream filling, and then the cookies are probably a bit thicker and are smaller in diameter.

I'm not suggesting Oreos in place of the wafers, I'm asking what size the chocolate wafers are as compared to an Oreo. Are they the same size or larger?

I googled and supposedly this is the recipe that's on the box:

Recipe: ICE BOX CAKE: from the original on the wafer package
Ingredients
1 package Famous Chocolate Wafers
Heavy Whipping Cream
Vanilla Flavoring
Sugar

Whip the cream in a cold bowl
Add one teaspoon of vanilla flavoring and sugar to taste
Whip cream fairly stiff before spreading cream between the wafers
Lay wafers to form a log
Use remaining cream cover the log
Refrigerate for at least 4 hours

Cut diagonally into 10 to 14 slices so that dessert has the appearance of being layered.
If you prefer individual servings: place four or five wafers together in a smaller log.

Oooooo, this looks yummy! I don't think I've ever had it before. I might have to make this for Valentine's Day!!

The secret of this "cake" is to let it sit in the refrigerator long enough for the cookies to soften into cake by absorbing some of the moisture form the whipped cream.

Terriks, just love your take on the cake, so artistic. This turned out to be a high-caloric thread and Nabisco may have a run on their chocolate wafers. I somehow remember the original recipe called for golden raisins but, since they were not to everyone's taste, got omitted somewhere along the line.

Graywings, the wafers are approximately the size of oreos, but thinning toward the edges instead of straight across.

That wasn't my take on the cake. That picture was from the website that I linked to, but my cake did turn out just as pretty. I failed to take pictures though. Most importantly, it was delicious!

Up north here we used to make a graham cracker one with chocolate pudding filling and then whipped cream on the outside. Gosh they were good, it's been years since I've had one.

It might pay to check with one of your grocery store managers to see if they have these wafers hidden someplace before you go ordering on Amazon.

I looked in the cookie aisle with no luck. When I was at the same store, today, I saw them with the ice cream toppings. huh?
