Valentine's Day plans?

Do you do anything for Valentine's Day? I usually get flowers from my husband and a nice card, and I give him a card.

I remember how fun it was to make a box in grade school and trade valentines (and helping my kids do that).I also thought the red heart-shaped boxes of candy were so special (I still like them).

We did when we dated and were first married and he always bought me a dozen long stem yellow roses (our favorite). However I had trouble enjoying the roses knowing how much more he was charged simply because of the holiday. So I finally convinced him to skip flowers. We usually avoid going out to dinner near big holidays like Mother's Day and Valentine's Day because the restaurants tend to be crowded and it's not as relaxing.

Now we have a quiet celebration at home - no flowers but a really nice dinner.

We celebrate it with our children for school (valentines/boxes/party for our younger child's class), but DH and I don't get into it. We subscribe to the "we try to show our love for one another each day in various ways, than a spend $$ just b/c a date says so" theory! lol

That said, this year, we will be going out to lunch together, but only b/c he will be traveling for several days for work, leaving that day. So we will look like the love birds at lunch that day I guess!

We never made a big deal about Valentine'a day nor our anniversary. He was usually not home on those days. The first year we were together I sent him roses. He was building a store at Powell & Market in San Francisco. He almost fainted when they were delivered. He really thought there was a mistake. His first wife never did things for him. One year he bought me a crystal heart. As long as his memory was good he always referred to me as his bride (about 23 years). I gave him a surprise birthaday party on his 49th. It turned out that was the first birthday party he had ever had. My "gift" to him was a hard hat. I stenciled "Super Jew" on it. He really got a hoot out of that. I have a picture of him wearing it while building the first house he built for us. His 80+ years old Mother always sent each of us a check on our birthdays. He always told me to take his check and spend it on myself. When he was to select commemorative jewerly for his 25 years with Walgreen's, he selected two diamond pendants for me. I enjoyed using my silver flatware on a daily basis. One Christmas he bought me stainless flatware. He said, I should save the silver for special occasions. I never told him other wise and put the silver away and began using the stainless. When he went the nursing home a counselor asked him what he was proud of, meaning his accomplishments. He looked at me and said, "my bride". It gets no better than that. My favorite picture of us.

Sue: After reading your latest post about your husband never doing things for you on Vday or your birthday, I just had to post about what my then husband did one year. All the guys he worked with were talking about what they were getting their wives for Vday, and when he said "nothing", they started in on him. They embarrassed him so much that on Vday, he brought me a box of chocolate covered cherries. He went to work and very proudly told the guys. He should have just shut his mouth but he had to 'brag' that the candy did double-duty as it was also for my birthday on the 15th. They razzed him for a long time over his cheapness. It was the ONLY time though that he ever got me anything for either day. Ahem, do you think that might be part of the reason he's my ex? lol Shirley

I had originally planned a stay at The Georgian Terrace in Atlanta with a few activities and dinner at Livingston’s but canceled because the restaurant is STILL not open for dinner since their pandemic closing. We substituted a trip elsewhere a couple of weeks ago, and, thankfully, still had the club reservations I made as a backup. As a rule we don’t care for crowds either but over the years have enjoyed looking at all the couples celebrating Valentine’s Day and wondering about their stories and lives. The first timers are usually easy to spot 🙂

I volunteer at a garden in a Southern California park and we try to have red tulips blooming for Valentine’s day. Nailed it this year! We have to refrigerate the bulbs and then plant at three different times to be sure some are blooming.

We're like mpmg46 and her husband. However, on the 14th we meet with the Tax Man...ohoh, the tax maaaann. Sorry, I couldn't resist. lol

I'm a big greeting card sender to family and friends. I got the kids and their kid's some beautiful ones from Papyrus. The cards for kids are sooo neat!

I get mpmg's thoughts, but I guess I am cheesey enough to enjoy a day that celebrates love. We have always done something for V-day. I got my favorite pink roses last week. We will have something special for dinner and probably a dessert, which is a treat for us. I always set the table nice for the day. Cards and maybe a little gift. Haven't picked up anything yet though! Will do something special for my dad and my grandmother.

I usually get DH a fairly inexpensive gift that's meaningful somehow. This year I got him a two funny t-shirts and a gift card to a cheese shop that he's been wanting to check out. I'm a spoiled gal...I see a box on a shelf on his side of the closet that's a telltale shade of aqua blue. ;)

I feel the same as mpmg. Don't need a Hallmark day to show the love. When I worked dh would send me flowers, but it seems silly now. Plus they're so ridiculously expensive. When my mom was still alive I'd do something special for her. She enjoyed that sort of thing.

We're going out to dinner tonight. Guess that can be our celebration. ;) Dh won't be here for V-day anyways.

When it comes to cards, I'm a bit of a cheapster. I think it's obscene to spend $3-$4 dollars on a card . . . but that's just me. I do decorate the dining room table, though, and buy small gifts for DD and DH. I plan a special Valentine's breakfast and dinner. I've pretty much decided that I'm making my all-time fav dessert again this year: Winter Spiced Molten Chocolate Cake with Rum-Ginger Ice Cream. It's actually much easier to make than it is to type (LOL)!
