Which Toaster Oven

I remember a year or so ago there was a thread about toaster ovens. I'm now in the market for one and cannot bring up the thread. I suppose it was too long ago. Was it the Cuisinart that everyone was raving about?

Beverlyal Â This may be overkill for you Â but just in case it is not... I *love* my Breville Toaster Oven. When I purchased it, I only had a single oven and wanted something that could help me when I needed 2. I never dreamed how will this would work or I would have purchased it years ago. I use this oven more than my regular oven.

I'd suggest one that is also a convection oven - more bang for your buck. You'll find more information and choices from the link below.

Goldgirl - We just replaced our 10 yo basic toaster oven (which did fine but was surely showing it's age) with a new Krups FBC1. Compared to our old TO this thing is amazing. It cooks so accurately. I don't know how else to say that. Our old TO just provided heat. It had a basic heating element. This thing seems to caress the food with heat, intelligently.... The heating elements surround the food and alternate giving the food time to 'catch up' Does that make any sense? The controls are intelligently laid out and work exactly the way I would expect them to. We haven't had it long enough to tell you anything about it's longevity but I would surely miss it if it was no longer here. I had no idea I could do so much with a toaster oven. It cleans up easily (for the occasional mishap). It's big enough for most things I would bake for just the two of us (not big enough for a full size chicken but 'parts' in a stoneware pan work just fine). And, by the way, it does a nice job with toast too... Hope this helps, Ken

I also use a puller -- especially when using the lower rack. It lives in the cabinet drawer next to the oven -- hidden -- where only I know where it is! Cathy - good to know about the great customer service you received from Breville. I will keep that in mind when mine gets 'sick'. I use it everyday, so I don't expect it to last forever, but it would be nice! I also splurged and purchased an extra pizza pan so I could make 2 pizzas easily - worth every penny for the convenience. I also have the electric wok made by Breville. I love their products! Your pup looks so content! Pretty kitchen.

We rarely have a need for a microwave, but after doing without for three years I knew I wanted one. We opted for the Bosch speed oven, and use it much more than I thought I would. Use is about 30% speed cooking, 20% microwave, and 50% of the time we use it as a small convection oven. However, the oven that has fully won me over is the steam oven. It is wonderful, and after some glitches with the control board it is working flawlessly (Bosch has been top notch for repair and service). It does everything that a regular microwave does except pop corn. Food reheated in a steam oven doesn't even compare to food reheated in a microwave. I've used all three (speed, steam, full size convection) at the same time on quite a few occasions and love having them all. However, if I had to pick just one of the smaller ones to go with my full size it would be the steam. I'd put a tiny microwave in the pantry for that rare need. Good luck with your new ovens!

So, make a niche(s) with the proper electric service and size to have a built-in put in if you really need it to sell (but I bet you won't)--if you're planning to sell within three years, get the built-ins already, but otherwise, they're going to be just so many used appliances. If yours are truly ratty, you can buy new versions of each. If you WANT a speed oven, and intend to use it as such, that's another story. Go for it! Read through the manuals, etc. But I think you'll find that it's not at all the same thing as your Breville toaster oven. You can use the convection oven settings on a speed oven to perform some of the same functions, but it's a real oven, with limitations, not a toaster that tap dances. I sometimes use my speed oven the way others use a toaster oven--mainly for heating up frozen appetizers or reheating casseroles when other ovens are full, but my old (dead) toaster oven was beloved for making great toast, which a speed oven isn't, and not for other uses. I do zap sandwiches on MW mode, and once in awhile lightly defrost or melt, but if I used a microwave more, I wouldn't have such an expensive machine doing it. I agree with putting enough thought into a remodel that it won't limit resale, because you never know what the future will bring--thus make sure there's place for built-ins to be built into--but unless it's a flip, it should be designed for your own use and enjoyment, and you used the key words "heavily use" and "love".

Bev, I hope you get some good suggestions..I remember that thread.
I am looking too..have tried a few, and I am not happy. The one I have now takes forever to toast.
And I do just want a toaster oven..nothing too big.

I'll be reading!

Based on the feedback here, I decided on the Cuisinart toaster oven. MIL bought it for me for my birthday, then based on my feedback, bought both my SIL's identical ones for their birthdays. All three of us are very happy with them. Since it's just me usuaully, I end up using it more than I do my regular oven.

If you are getting a bigger toaster oven, make sure you have the electric outlet for it.

You may blow your breaker/fuse if you plug it in the same outlet as your microwave or refrigerator.

Several of us here have the Cuisinart brand. Mine is also convection, but actually, I hardly use the convection except when I am high heat roasting in the TO. I LOVE my Cuisinart.

Grainlady, the convection suggestion would be an excellent idea if I didn't already have a microwave/convection oven.

Renee and Teresa, do you know what model Cuisinart you have? I was reading some ratings and some of them do not seem to perform nearly as well as other.

Kathleen, I'm really wanting to research this well before I buy because I'm leary of toaster ovens since buying a top of the line Black and Decker toaster oven a few years back and just as the warranty went out it got so bad I had to trash it. And I never had used it very much either.

Decarch, I'm glad you mentioned the electric outlet. Are some of the ovens 220 instead of 110?

Beverly - I'm assuming you are talking about one of the reviewers comments? She is wrong - the manual clearly says you can use OVEN SAFE glass baking dishes, and foil too. I do it all the time. :-)

Yes. Many units meant for foriegn countries are 220V AC. The problem would be if they have timing electronics. because many countries' AC electric supply are 50 hz (cycles/second) and in the USA it is 60 hz. That can have strange imkplications.

Beverly, Mine is the TOB-160 BCWTM. At least that's what the back of the oven says. :0 It is not the convection one, which is what I think most CFer's who have the Cuisinart have, but I really didn't want convection.

I LOVED my Cuisinart too. I would not hesitate to buy the Cuisinart Convection, it served me well.

But my complusion to upgrade brought me to the Breville which I got for Christmas. Mainly because I got it for $170 with a BBB 20% off coupon and another discount negotiated because the box was abused. And, yes I use foil and glass bakeware, the oven hasn't objected.

I cleaned and gave the Cuisinart to my hermit brother.

I wanted to get the Cuisinart, but it didn't fit in the small space where I wanted to put it, and so I got a Black & Decker that has a rotisserie with it. I've had it for several months and have been completely happy with it, but I don't use it as much as I did when I did not have a good regular oven. I think B&D is about half the price of Cuisinart, but the Cuisinart might have features that you really want. I have rather limited counter space in my new kitchen, although I do have a nice peninsula that of course cannot house appliances. My old toaster oven was also B&D, but it was white, and Kevin wanted to get a black and stainless steel one mainly for looks, and it was not at all expensive. The old white one had a broken leg.

Make sure you get one with a crumb tray that you remove from the front - that makes keeping it clean very much easier, especially if you are using it for toast a lot, which is what I mainly do.
