A question about using saffron...

Today I'm trying a new bread recipe, Swedish Cardamon Coffee Bread, which called for a pinch of saffron threads. I put about 5 threads of saffron into a warm milk/water/butter mixture and let it sit for several minutes before adding the rest of the ingredients. I expected the threads to sort of dissolve - but they really didn't. Nor did they add much yellow color to the bread.

Did I not use enough saffron? Should I have added the threads to only warm water? Was my saffron (good quality I think) too old?

Any help is appreciated!
