Equally Nosy about Oneta Home Saffron

Vintage has put out the last of its new offerings and this golden apricot tea rose, small and with rapid rebloom, is one of them. Its color is said to be almost unique among tea roses and of course I had to have it. Does anyone have any information about it? I'm surprised it's still available. I thought a tea rose this unique would have been snapped up very quickly. Another one that caught my interest was ORG (Oakland Rose Garden) Renae Seedling which sounds phenomenal.

It grows at the SJHRG. The color is like a more saturated Lady Hillingdon, or maybe Buff Beauty. The bush is not too big at all (probably around 4') and speading and dense. The blooms are muddled. There is a good tea fragrance. I think I posted a few pictures on the Antique gallery.

Formulas are tough. Individual colorants can have an underlying signature of another color. Like green with blue or black with blue,etc. And in general not all colorants are created equal, i.e. some colorants are far more potent than others and a tiny bit of those colorants go ten times *farther* than others. The actual, crafted and tested mix takes the full aspect of each colorant into consideration to arrive at the final color. If you look the label of a color from Glidden for example, and it refers to green colorant you'd have no idea that green could better be described as a blue-green teal. Not just 'green'. Apply mental color mixing gymnastics using typical color wheel color mixing myths and you'll end up with a hot mess. The average consumer of color is better off leaving formulas alone and dealing with chips and brush-out paint samples. Beware and ignore the peddlers of color "tools". Some claim if you understand the formula structure of a particular brand, then you can predict all kinds of crap about paint colors. Or, my other favorite is when they take apart the fandeck and arrange it in a magical manner that guarantees harmonious color schemes. Which it may very well do -- from a strictly paint chip perspective. But the fact inherent lighting is totally left out of their scheming equations means all bets are off when it comes to deploying their guaranteed harmonious color palettes in the 3D built environment.

Hee! I always read "cow slip" (not that the image is any better). Looks like I can't post links directly in this forum (as in kitchens). Same color, same room, opposite walls. What a difference! Now, I DO like both of these incarnations of Butter. And they look to me like the Rejuvenation and Lowe's photos linked above. But darn that butter! It also gets lemony in my kitchen--both in bright sunlight, and if I use cf bulbs. (I don't have a photo of the butter-turned-lemon for you.) I need a never-lemony butter. Maybe I just need to board up all the windows in my home, and control the yellow with artificial, unchanging lighting? ;-)

I have adopted three dogs over the years from three different rescues. The first required an extensive questionnaire, ( own or rent, fenced yard, vet reference, who takes the dog if I couldn't care for them) followed by a meeting at the foster parents a 1 1/2 hour drive for me, then a final meet and adoption because of how this rescue was set up we all met in a park that was equal distance for all involved the co coordinator, the foster and me. (200-300$ I forget exactly how much it was ) Neutered and vaccinated. After this dog passed from bone cancer broken heart and lonely I started searching for a puppy on pet finder and found Theo. Again an extensive questionnaire followed by a phone interview, some questions similar to the first adoption but they also asked a lot about what would you do if questions and training classes were mandatory to adopt. After being approved to adopt from them I got to meet Theo at the foster family to see if he was right for me. After that the foster mom came to my home to check it and Theo came to stay. This was 350$ including the training classes. The last dog Duncan oh Duncan... ( he was the first dog I got to name the others already had names) He was picked up as stray and at the pound. I had to call before going and let them know who I wanted to see. Took him for a walk and three questions and 50$ later I took him home. First thing the bugger did was jump in the pond :) Theo Duncan and me are happy little family. Love all my dogs like family know I am a good dog owner, completely understand why rescues GRILL potential adopters. They get so many people who are not serious inquiring over the oh so cute animals, others who really are not in the right place in life to own a dog, or understand the responsibilities of owning a dog, and as mentioned above people who just want dogs to hurt them. Rescues just really want to get the adoption right the very best place for the dog and the best dog for you. Yup its a pain in the butt. Would and will go through it all again. Rescues pets come from people who love them, sometimes this causes a little bit of crazy over protectiveness but its usually from a good place. Trust me the love you will get from your pet will be worth the nosiness and annoying procedure to get them. Can you tell Im crazy pro adoption :)

Thanks for all of the input so far. There are a few items that may help save us money on the construction. First, we want the floors to be sealed concrete throughout the house except for the bathrooms. Unconventional, I know, but it earns LEED points and is something that my wife and I are happy with. Secondly, we don't want upper kitchen cabinets. Cabinets are expensive and I personally hate them, and so does my wife. We'd prefer a small walk-in pantry right off of the kitchen instead. We'd like to use SIPs for the framing. Even though they are more costly up front, they allegedly cut about 30% of the labor cost since they are pre-insulated. These are a few examples of some money-saving items that would actually make us happier than the traditional. We're really open to any suggestions regarding materials or cost saving measures and plan to specify as many details about the house before we start getting estimates.

If you search under Oneto rather than Oneta you'll find the picture. The color is pretty but I have to admit that the form, at least in this picture, does not seem to be the greatest. Oh well, I'll just have to see how it does in my garden. Masha, I didn't detect any great enthusiasm in your description above. Have you had this rose long, and would you order it again after having grown it?

I was told to deffinately get the Renae seedling. Another rose on the list that I've wanted for years is the Climbing Ophelia Type. It is very beautiful growing in San Jose. There are a very few each of these things so snap them up!

Here are the pics. A few caveats: the bloom on the pic is the only one I could find with color left - the bush was just done blooming. So perhaps it is not very representative, I don't know. I am not very familiar with the rose. Also, forgive the terrible quality of the bush shot, my point-and-shoot can't do any better than that. As I said the bush was done blooming, so not much color. Hopefully, you can see a fairly short, dense, wider-than-tall bush. That's the best I can do. The blooms were not the biggest of teas (I thought it was another Buff Beauty when I saw it from a distance).
The tag does say "Oneto" on it, I don't know which is right.

Thank you Masha. Having grown Buff Beauty, I'm convinced this is not one. Your first shot does look quite a bit like the picture on Vintage. At any rate it will be an interesting rose to have in my garden. It does seem quite floriferous and Vintage states rapid rebloom.

Pam, I wish I had room for the Renae seedling. If you buy it I hope you'll keep us updated with pictures. It sounds spectacular. I only wish there had been a picture on Vintage.

Thanks Masha, glower AND bush always help for placement even if they are at the end of the flush. I've gotten so many pink OGRs lately, I've been hunting for yellows, so I think I'll be happy with mine. I love the blousy bloom.

Gregg apparently spelled the name wrong when he collected it. It is Oneto Home Saffron, not Oneta.
