first event - thanks to all of you

I am doing my first event this weekend - it is really a dog walk/fundraiser, with vendors. I am taking my dog scarves and coolin' ties. Thanks to all of your suggestions, I set out my table and checked the display. So glad I did. I discovered I needed another table and my tablecloth was too big. I am using a small red/white check. It is a small enough check that it can count as a solid, I think.

I am also planning on doing a show Nov. 11 at a church. Thought the table covering would be good for Holiday show, too. Hope to sell cakes in a mug, rice bags and darnit dolls (after all I will be in a church). Will take dog scarves, too. I plan on trying to make a dog hat this week, just to see how it goes.

The dog walk is $30 and the church is also $30.

I agree with other posters who made the important distinction between a performance versus an activity. A school carnival is the equivalent of going to a movie or the mall, and even though the parent whose day it isn't would like to go, they are barging in on the other parent's time with the kid! That said...this is a "do as I say and not as I do" thing for our house, because even though my ex and I always divided things up like that, BM would have none of that, and we gave in. It is such a relief to have both SDs out of high school so there are fewer of those events where it was her, DH and me hanging around, sometimes all day, with the SDs, or even in events where the kids didn't really stay with the parents. And she wanted it that way on her time, too. She would always call DH to invite him to church events or things at her golf club, places we weren't even involved with. He would always say no; eventually she figured out that if she invited both of us, we were more likely to come. Which was true, but we really didn't want to do those things with her, where the three of us (or sometimes her DH too) had to socialize for long periods of time. The funny thing is, in desperation DH and I tried a tactic where I would go without him if it was something on our time and DH couldn't go. At first BM was mad (she chewed him out once in front of the girls) but then it seemed fine with her--DH called me her "new best friend." It was just so uncomfortable and I am so happy it is pretty much over. I feel like a newlywed.

Caroline, I feel your pain. I have a yucky under the sink look as well, oh, I should say "had". I used a non slip mat, designed for bath tubs under there. Looks pretty nice, and made everything lighter, as it is whitisch. I guess, I better keep an eye on it, and see if it gets wet. Thanks for making me think. I just looked, and so far, all is still dry under there. But, I want to report, it is not that hard to take a garbage disposal out, and re do the pipes. I have done it before, and will do it here too, once all other more pressing things are taken care of. Moni

Thank you Maire Cate! It is awful how this is affecting some of our elderly. I have had several conversations regarding this with medical personnel, facility personnel, etc. It is really hard on this group. I am so thankful the restrictions are easing up a bit! Dad has had two psychological evaluations (due to some very confusing conversations, etc. we were worried) once in the hospital and now in the facility he is in. He does not have dementia, but the CONFUSION caused by this pandemic can play havoc with their mental state. Thankfully, in this new facility, the psychologist is the director of a local geriatric program so we are happy for his input. Dad has about 80 more days for rehab and then we will decide what happens. I really do not see him going back to assisted living, but maybe he will prove me wrong! That's another bad thing, with the restrictions, we were not able to visit facilities before we moved him! It all fell into place though, this facility was the only one where we knew someone who had recently had a family member there and the only facility that had a private room open. I think it was meant to be.

Hope there's a great turnout for both events and that you make lots of sales. Kind of exciting, huh? Try to relax and enjoy all the compliments you are sure to get on your creations.

event not very good - none of the vendors were happy - they had us stuck pretty far from the main activity. I managed to only earn back my fee - $25. Really disappointed.

So sorry to hear that! At least you got your fee back. Don't give up, you will find the right one. More people should be out shopping soon now that the weather is cooling some.

this was the dog walk, only had dog scarves. Found out many vendors were unhappy. They told us to set up in one area, we didn't have much traffic. Most of the events were going on on the other side of the small field. But one vendor set up over there, and had a great time. I will learn.

The darn it dolls, mug cakes and maybe corn bag warmers will be on NOv. 11 at a church (hence darnit dolls, not dammit dolls)

Sorry about your first show, but as others have said, more into the fall and nearer Christmas seems to be the best time to sell crafts. Don't give up! Just think, you made your entrance fee back, there may have been some vendors at that show that didn't do that! Keep a postive attitude and a friendly smile on your face at all your shows. It seems that a lot of first shows turn out that way. I know some of mine did! But consider them a learning experience-how to set up, what supplies (scissors, hammer, cord, tape etc) you need to have. When you at least make the fee, then you are on your way! Don't give up, just be more choosy about the show you pick. Some Church shows are pretty good. I was at a garden club/plant show, no fees for me as a member, and took a few garden-related crafts. Sold 3 or 4 painted pavers, but no plant hangers, but it was the plants people were there to buy.
I will take a few next year also, but I don't expect very much. Hey, I had to be there to help with the plant sale, my sales were a bonus! Gave the club a percentage of my sales.

Could you share the instructions on the dog scarves. I agree with everyone else. The ones that are in Oct are usually slower. Not many people thinking about gifts yet. Keep at it and you will have a good one.
