My Father had a bad fall update

Hi everyone, I don't know if anyone remembers but I posted about my dad who fell off a ladder a week before xmas and had a brain bleed but I thought I'd post an update.

Dad spent 3 weeks in hospital, the first week he mostly slept and just waking him up and getting him to eat a bit of food was difficult. By the second week he was much more awake but a lot of what he was saying was garbled words, almost like he was speaking another language, although I think he thought everything was coming out properly. By the third week he was speaking a lot better and eating well again. There was no further bleeding and so he was transferred to a rehab hospital where he has been for the last week and a half.

He still has a lot of trouble remembering names, and also what things are called, even just remembering that a cup is called a cup is difficult, which frustrates him a bit, and he also has trouble staying focused. They do work with him everyday on his memory and balance, and teaching him how to do basic things like showering etc. It's been a bumpy ride for sure. We don't know how much he will eventually improve over time but he has a long way to go.

I have wondered and hoped you would check back when you had time. Wow he had a significant brain injury. There is a person on Kitchen Forum that also had this from a fall...and then had a 2nd fall that put her in a permanent place as far as no more improvement.

I am sorry that your Dad has had such a rough time. I don't remember what his age is. Is he walking at all alone ? I know they are being careful but....I believe she fell while at the rehab and re-injured . I am a retired RN and had a head injury a number of years ago. It was no where near as serious as your dad's but I know how frustrating the recovery can be.

Please do check back and keep us updated. My thoughts and concerns are with you all. Good wishes to your Dad ! c

Thanks for the update, it must be hard to see him struggle that way but keep up the hope for a good recovery, he seems to be in good hands.

Yea, that's kind of what I thought, and I don't really have time right now to sit down and research what his Rx is. I did move some soil away from the trunk of that one tree, and in the next couple weeks I'll "cage" the trunks just to be on the safe side in case it is varmit damage. He was really informative and a pleasure to talk to, don't mind spending money on that kind of treatment. I really would like another small red laceleaf for the particular spot the deadwood is in (it really is perfect for the design) but he suggested not planting another one there but said I could go the plant-it-in-a-decorative-pot route. I may to that and haul it in the garage over the winter. English Gardens has 50% their pottery this weekend, they've got some really nice pots (and BIG ones), so I'll see what I can come up with.

Finish: Pacific Strong, a discontinued Bona waterbased urethane finish in two coats was applied over Duracraft stain. Chipping: small 1/8th" or bigger pieces of wood individually chip out from the wood floor upon light contact by shoes, full plastic laundry basics, kitchen garbage cans.An opening is left in the floor which is blond, like bare oak. It's not flaking off as I've seen can happen with drums during refinishing, nor are their wavy lines periodically. Rather it's chipping off with contact, as when a tree limb is placed in a chipper/shredder machine outdoors. As to the stairs, well both the stain and the finish are gone on the edges of the steps (the rounded part at the stair end). Bare wood remains and is very slippery compared to the rest of the step, where stain and finish give it a rougher surface texture. You can see the difference on the step and you can feel the lack of any finish on the edges, precisely where it is needed most. We keep the house humidified and run house temp at 64 in the winter. We don't abuse our floors. Thanks for your response. In all my many years owning several homes, I have never encountered anything like this.

missingtheobvious is correct. In New York, the supreme court is the court of general jurisdiction that hears cases. It is the opposite of most states and the opposite of the federal court system. I have a law degree but don't practice law and am not well versed in estate law. THIS IS NOT LEGAL ADVICE. However, as far as I know, she can't come after you personally. She can only make a claim on the estate. I believe if the estate is probated already and sufficient time has passed without her making a claim on the estate, she is out of luck. See e.g. http://codes.lp.findlaw.com/nycode/SCP/18 § 1802. Effect of failure to present claim If any claim is not presented on or before the day fixed in the notice published pursuant to the preceding section or if no notice is so published, within 7 months from the date of issue of letters, the fiduciary shall not be chargeable for any assets or moneys that he may have paid in good faith in satisfaction of any lawful claims or of any legacies or distributions to the legatees or distributees of the decedent before such claim was presented. Such 7 month period shall begin on the date letters were first issued to any fiduciary, including a temporary administrator or a preliminary executor, and shall not be interrupted by any subsequent issue of letters, except that the time during which there is no fiduciary in office shall not be counted as part of such period. and § 1803: Every claim against the estate of a decedent other than claims for expenses of administration and claims of the United States or the state of New York must be in writing, contain a statement of the facts upon which it is based and the amount thereof. In addition the fiduciary may require the claimant to present proof by affidavit that the amount of the claim is justly due, that all payments thereon, if any, have been credited, that the claimant knows of no offsets and no evidence of indebtedness and holds no security, except as specifically described in the affidavit.

Thanks trailrunner, dad is 74 so I guess that might affect how well he recovers? He is walking around really well, and he gets out of bed and wanders around the ward, although last week he did lose his balance and had to be helped back to bed. After that they moved him to a room right next to the nurses station to keep a closer eye on him but he's back out of bed and wandering around again and so far he's been ok. It's really made me realise how fragile our brains are, like in the past I've been teetering at the top of a ladder painting the outside of our house and I've thought "I hope I don't fall because I'll break a bone or something", but I never even considered a brain injury which would be much worse. I'm so glad to hear you recovered from it, it must be terrible to go through.

thanks mitch, he is in good hands and right now it's the best place for him until he gets a bit further along.

trance...I am so glad to hear that they are so conscientious !! Sounds wonderful. I am XXX my fingers for his full recovery. The brain is amazing and develops new pathways when the old ones don't work...so there is great hope for his recovery . Good Luck to you all. c

Trance, it was so thoughtful of you to post a follow-up!

Sounds like both you & your father have been through a lot in the past several weeks! While it must be so gratifying to see his progress, indeed it must be hard to seem him struggle.

You're a wonderful, devoted daughter to offer your support & presence so generously. It is clear that your dad is loved dearly.

I wish your father the best as he & his health care team work together to advance further recovery. I hope that you will take extra care to nurture your own health & spirit at this challenging time as well, Trance.

Oh Trance, my heart goes out to you and your family - and especially to your dear Dad. What a terrible ordeal you've all been through (and why do these awful things seem to happen so often around the holidays?)! I pray that your Dad begins to make great strides with the therapy and that soon he will be as he was before the accident. I wish for you comfort and encouragement as you go through this with him. It's so very hard to see a parent in a helpless state.

Gosh, I have been wondering about your dad. Remember, I went through the same thing with my beloved Uncle who fell out of a tree while picking fruit. He had surgery to drain the blood and repair the bleed.

It is so difficult to watch someone you love go through this. I wish your family the best and hope for a full recovery.

Trailrunner I am so glad to hear you say this! I guess it just takes time for those new connections to happen but it gives me a lot of hope.

Golddust, yes I remember! I was horrified when I read your story and how you had to convince your uncle's doctor there was something wrong, that was just such a scary situation, and he was so lucky to have you there for him. Did he make a full recovery?

Thanks for the encouragement everyone, it has been a stressful time and Dad and I have had many long talks recently as I've tried to keep him positive but at the same time I've had my own doubts and worries about him but as long as he keeps making progress things are moving in the right direction
