I knew I should have said 'no'. ( s ) Live Update

Here I am asking for help again. I'm not sure what to do...here is what's going on.

My notebook is an ASUS 1005-H

CPU : Intel Â® Atom 280 @1.66GHz

2G RAM

Windows XP

Lately, every time my notebook booted there was a request to do a Live Update. I finally said yes this morning. I think I did know it was a BIOS update and I figured it was important. (Sorry, I know better.... I should have looked into it before I said yes.) It did the update and the computer shut down and rebooted, if I recall correctly.

When I came back later, I opened the notebook and the blue windows screen was there and it said "windows shutting down". I was puzzled.

After it shut down, I rebooted and the following black/white screen appeared...

DO KEEP the power supply on and NOT touch the system while performing BIOS Update.

It finished programming and said to: Press power button to close.

I pressed the button to turn it off. After it powered down, I restarted the machine.

Then this black/white screen appeared:

There was a logo with www.ami.com under it and the words American Megatrends

Phew! You frightened me there. No doubt made you pause too.

You should press F2 to load defaults to at least get back up and running. If need be you can always go into the BIOS and make any adjustment needed at a later time. No doubt you will be asked to confirm that you selected the F2 option.

I do not believe I have ever heard of anyone getting a notice to update the BIOS. I checked the first 4 pages on the Asus forum specifically for EEE computers and see nothing suggesting anyone else had such a notice. The forum is linked below, you may like that for future reference.

Owbist...thanks so much for your help. Yes, my heart sank when I saw the screens. After pressing F2, Windows loaded normally and everything seems to be all right. I'll keep an eye out for anything odd.

I just needed someone to hold my hand while I pressed that key. Thank you for the link...I'll bookmark it.

Whether to go down to counter height with the opening: Are you tidy? Do you leave things around the sink and will it bother you to see the backs of the things you leave around the sink from the other room? If you want to have a bit a screening around the sink I would leave it and you can create a countertop ledge/bar area at the higher level, the seating would have to be bar stools, not counter stools. If you don't want any screening of the sink from the other room, open it down to counter height.

--Where many people have difficulty when just starting out is having too many bills that come due all at the same time, and not enough money to pay for them that pay period. That's where a budget showing the entire month will help. That's where having an emergency fund will help until things get normalized. It usually takes 3 or 4 months to get a budget working smoothly - and that's perfectly normal. --Another problem - bills that come due every 6- or 12-months and not setting aside a portion of that amount each month so you have that amount covered when the bill comes due - things like car insurance, taxes and tags, Christmas..... --And the ever wise, but usually ignored - pay yourself first. If you can get an amount automatically drafted from your pay and added to a bank or savings and loan savings account, that's a good way to pay yourself first. It would be wise to allow this amount of savings to accumulate to 3-6 months worth of expenses as the "rainy day" fund should your job be terminated. This money will also help smooth the way when inflation happens and prices go up -- but you don't get a pay raise. --Another area of the budget people should consider - a cash amount for food, which is spent only on food. Too many times people spend their food budget on too many NON-food items, and wonder why they are living on popcorn by the end of the week. And keep in mind, wasted food is the most expensive you purchase, so plan your meals around leftovers. You can get at least 4 meals from one whole chicken, and I've read articles making even more. If you buy a head of lettuce, plan meals that will include it during the week rather than letting it die of loneliness in the crisper drawer. --With that budgeted amount for food, include a portion for stockpiling. Even if it's as little as $5 per week of your food budget gets used for stockpiling, it will pay you dividends in the long run. If a food staple that you commonly use is on sale that week, use your $5 for buying ahead. Try to accumulate a wide variety of foods from all the food groups (meat/meat alternatives, fruits, vegetables, breads/starches), and try to get ahead enough for at least 3-months. --Buy ingredients (staples like flour, sugar, spices, dried beans/grains/seeds) instead of ready-made, and your food dollars will purchase more food. Choose whole foods over highly-processed foods, which are generally less expensive and better for you. As mentioned above, learn how to cook from scratch and learn how to make your own "convenience" foods, such as a Bisquick-type baking mix, pancake mix, gifts-in-a-jar type recipes are a good example of making your own "convenience" foods from ingredients you have in the pantry. Here's an example: ingredients to make pancakes - milk, salt, sugar, baking powder, egg and vegetable oil. With those same ingredients you can make cookies, cakes, waffles, biscuits, quick breads..... --An inexpensive way to purchase frozen vegetables is to buy the biggest, and least expensive, bag of mixed vegetables you can find and afford. With a little extra work you can quickly separate the bag into the individual vegetables for much less than buying them each in individual bags. --How much for utilities? This is harder to budget because it changes throughout the year. You can check with the electric/gas company to find out how much the highest bill was for where you are living. When it comes to budgeting an amount for utilities, use the highest amount and add $10, and put that amount in an envelope for utilities. When the bill comes due pay the actual amount, and allow any extra to accumulate in your envelope as a cushion against late payments, cost increases, and that record hot or cold spell. After 6-8 months, you may need to adjust your budgeted amount. -Grainlady

Triple, ever since the first day I ever planted anything (a rose...and about 200 years ago), I've been obsessive about my plants. So if something ate anything, I would know. I recall an ongoing battle between me and one squirrel that to this day, I did not find a way to kill, LOL. (Another "bug" if you ask me.) Out of hundreds of tomatoes, we actually ate about 20 total thanks to that demon. Speaking of demons, I have one resident squirrel here. He is eyeing my bushes and I am eyeing him. I'm older since that last battle and have less patience--let's just leave it at that for now. LOL But on GW/Houzz, I've seen so many people post about hornworms and I shudder each time I see one, praising sweet baby Jesus that I never, ever had one. Until this year. It just obliterated big stems of all the leaves and growth. I feel like I am down to about half the potential tomatoes I had--and this poor thing is a determinate plant so it's not like I can wait for the next round. Very strange, too, because I have 7 total tomato plants here and only this one, which was technically the most robust one, is the one that got hornworms. It is, of course, the only one where I have one plant of this variety, too. Ain't life grand? :) (Meanwhile, it was two tomato hornworms that came back to triple's backyard six times each...Haha.)

We had one of those neighbors for a couple of years. You couldn't tell her anything, she knew it all. She alienated each neighbor in turn with her antics. She even had the nerve to call my landscaper (she used a different one every year, no one wanted to work with her again) to tell them to ask me to move my back yard gate to the other side of my house, because she felt the lawnmowers went over "her grass." I guess she didn't notice when her landscapers lawnmowers went over "my" grass. Couldn't be helped...I don't know how she figured it would be any different with my gate on the other side...the grass still needed to be mowed! Thank goodness she moved...

I am pleased you are back to normal now Pam. You may need to go into the setup windows to adjust any particular setting. Just be sure of what you change before pressing F10 to save and exit. For example you may have heat or fan speed sensors which might be disabled by resetting to factory defaults. This means those warnings will not happen.

Making changes in the setup screens is a normal process, flashing the BIOS is far different and extreme caution is needed.

A BIOS flash is usually a 'last straw' attempt to fix a problem - and not the normal run of the mill problem either. It can be used when it might be the only answer. The user needs to understand too that any power failure during the process will kill the motherboard.

Hi owbist,
Thanks for your note. I must say I would have no idea how to make changes to the BIOS...and only a vague idea of even how to find it. :)

This morning everything still seems normal. I was reading your message and did a search via the START button for "live update" to see if I could see what is different, if anything. My notebook when into sleep mode and when I pressed the button to wake it up, there was a window titled: ASUS Eee LiveUpdate. There are tabs at the side for Update, Event, History, Configuration, Setting, Help and About. I clicked on the History tab and there is one entry that has three headings....File Name, Version and Size

File name: 1005HA BIOS
Version: 0905
Size 389.3KB

At the bottom it gives me the option of two buttons...Remove and Exit.

When I clicked Update, it says "Update complete! There are no new updates. Last update 2009/12/8

So, maybe when I chose do the "Live Update" yesterday, it installed the LiveUpdate program and I'll get periodic reports? I have googled ASUS Eee 1005H + Live Update and find very little.

So, whatever I did, it does seem to be all right at the moment and I will watch for any messages about fan speed, heat problems or anything else that looks odd.

Asus releases the new BIOS version of Asus Eee PC 1005HA supported for Linux, Windows XP and Windows 7 that will be launched on October 22.
The latest BIOS version, BIOS 0905, will improve battery performance of Asus Eee PC 1005HA.

So it seems your little foray into the unknown was a valued trip. Your battery life if nothing else might be improved. As for any other settings I would not bother until you find there is a definite need to change any particular setting. Changes are quite simple really, the issues arise when a user gets carried away and changes other things.
