BS & CC users: How do YOU clean your cast iron grates?
Comments (9)Like mojavean states, the grates are coated with a porcelain enamel, almost a glass like substance. It will wear, and it might be susceptible to attack by "some" of the stronger dishwashing detergents that have potassium or sodium hydroxide in them. I quote one sentence from Wikipedia under the topic 'dishwasher'-"glass dissolves slowly in alkaline aqueous solution."... you can read the article yourself. I mentioned before, it's like the porcelain coating on French cast iron ovens, such as Le Creuset and Staub. Having said that, it would probably take years to have much of an effect. Still, I would rather have the bottom of my pans wear out this coating. The grates will take a seasoning, you just wipe them with the smallest amount of oil, and turn the burner back on. Some oils smoke less than others, refined light olive oil is good, this seasoning may burn off and stick to the bottom of your expensive copper pan, especially if it's a fresh seasoning....otherwise, not a problem, and in fact it probably protects the porcelain from wear. The big thing with cast iron, even porcelain cast iron, is to keep it dry. Sometimes you'll see a light 'bloom' of rust on it, just wipe it off. But if rust gets under the porcelain, it will lift it off and chip it. To clean, I use an almost dry scrubby sponge, and leave the bowls on the cooktop. If I spill a mess of flour, or manage to make a complete mess, I do take the bowls to the sink and rinse them there....See MoreCleaning Toto cast iron tub - what do you use?
Comments (9)Actually, it sounds like Toto's customer service was quite helpful when you called, they gave you two specific product names! Bon Ami and Soft Scrub are both extremely mild abrasives (about as abrasive as toothpaste) that won't dull the porcelain enamel surface. By "abrasive cleaners" they are referring to products like Comet or Ajax, which will scratch the living daylights out of that nice smooth porcelain finish. This dulls the surface and the microscopic scratches collect dirt, which leads to a dingy appearance. For routine bathroom cleaning I usually use Oxyclean, which is plenty sufficient for the whole room. The Mr. Clean Magic Erasers also work as well as Bon Ami (wonderful stuff, and very earth friendly) or Soft Scrub (Ecover makes a great nontoxic version) when there's soap scum build-up or a bathtub ring that needs dealing with. Plain old baking soda also makes an excellent extra-mild abrasive that doesn't scratch - make a paste with a little water and apply with a sponge....See MoreHow do you clean your stove top cast iron grates
Comments (7)My grates are black, and when they look a little goey I toss them in the dishwasher. And boy that does the trick they look like new again. I have heard (don't quote me) that this can cause them to rust. I wonder if this would be the case with SS grates. Mine are some black metal, not sure what they are made of. Bosch Range. ~boxerpups This is from Good Housekeeping Magazine Ask Helouise Is there an easy way to keep burners from getting grimy? -- Elizabeth Malvey, Wakefield, MA If you cook, there's really no way around it -- but you can give burners a thorough cleaning. Start by wiping grates and burners with a damp sponge. Remove grates and soak in hot, soapy water for 30 minutes. Add a teaspoon of ammonia to the sink water to help loosen the grime. Scrub them with a stiff brush to remove any remaining gunk. To minimize future messes, keep an eye on pots so they don't boil over....See MoreWhat does your BlueStar cast iron look like after heavy use?
Comments (16)This is my 4 year old 30” Platinum which needs to be cleaned. DH stir fryed in the wok on the front left burner tonight and last night he seared 2 steaks. Usually we do the steaks outside on the grill but we had heavy rain and wind. We cook every day and aren't too concerned with keeping it spotless. I'm sure you can see the grease spots and crumbs which will clean up easily. I'll probably take the grates off tomorrow and wash them in the sink with Dawn. I don't think the cast iron has developed unsightly discoloration. There are some scratches on the stainless front which happened recently. I tried to move a hot, heavy cast iron skillet and could only use one hand - the other hand was sprained and I ended up setting the skillet on the front bib. We also have a 6month old 30" RNB at our vacation home on an island. I'll post a photo but that one doesn't get the heavy use that this one does. Having trouble posting photos - I'll try again....See Morerhome410
