OT: For Future Potential Cell Phone Users

If you contemplate getting a cell phone and using it while grocery shopping here's how to acquire the skill by practising at home.

1.Start smack dab in the middle of one end of your hallway (super market aisle) so there is no possibility of being passed.

2. Put one hand to your ear with your feet 13 inches apart, cock your head toward the phone (they must be quite heavy).

3. Waddle very very slowly along swaying side to side taking 3 inch steps being careful to fully block the hallway (aisle). Stare vacantly.

4. Just before the end of the hallway (aisle) stop (block it) and take 2 full minutes to 'finish' the conversation.

5. The phone works by voice power not electricity.

Yep, I have been caught by such users. They must have really practiced to perfect their stance. LOL!

I get the block the shelf space guys in HomeDepot. They shuffle sideways, back & forth with crooked necks, right in front of the item you are trying to grab.
I've learned to look down at their shoes with a funny expression so I can distract them long enough to bump them out of my way.

Does that make sense? Yes and no. Hole in back of drawer; outlet in wall. Okay... open drawer, put phone and charger in drawer, plug charger's cord into outlet (huh? you squiggle the charger's cord through a hole to the outlet?), and then close drawer? No no, that can't be right. Ah... all the recharging cords already run through the hole to the outlet so you just reach into the drawer and grab the right recharger and plug into your phone? Okay that sounds good... but where are those cords when the drawer is being opened and closed? (I'm seeing them squished between the drawer back and the outlet, or else being pulled back and forth through the hole.) And is it okay to leave the plugged-in charger sitting in the drawer unused [but "hot"] while the phone is in your pocket? I guess I'm missing something obvious... please pass the caffeine....

I have the minimum data plan on my phone, with the phone I got, smartphone, you are required to have a data plan, I am with Att. What I do is go into settings and turn off mobile network for Internet. That way I know I am not using up my data plan, but I can access the Internet via wifi with no costs, at home I have wifi so I can use it all I want or any where I have a wifi connection. Now if I am out and about and find I need to access the Internet and no wifi around then I go to settings and turn on the mobile data connection. I can then connect to the Internet to get the information I need then turn it back off. I have an app on my phone that keeps track of exactly how much I have used on both the mobile network and wifi. One thing that will eat up your data plan is if you allow the apps and stuff on the phone to update automatically, because if they all decide to update when you are on the mobile connection that definitely uses up quite a bit. If I turn on my mobile network I always go to settings before that and turn off auto updates, so I know nothing will be using it but me for what ever I am looking up. I learned that fast, the first day I had my phone and checked my data used I already had used over 20 mb and my plan is only 200mb for the whole month. I don't use texting so I don't have it in my plan but I didn't know that at first so I texted a few people and sent pictures in texts I found out those were charged to me individually and the picture ones were quite expensive. I don't do that ever. So if you can do it this way you can get away with the minimal data plan of 200mb if you will be using mostly the mobile network instead of wifi I would go for a larger data plan. You can definitely go up in plan size not sure about down.

From this week's Dear Abby: DEAR ABBY: My husband travels all over the state of Florida as a disc jockey. He provides musical entertainment at weddings, conventions, school dances and corporate events. I recently accompanied him to an evening wedding that was held at an upscale country club. No sooner had the ceremony begun when a young woman entered, crossed the center aisle and sat down. A moment later, her cell phone began to ring. Instead of turning off the phone, the woman took the call! She got up, walked in front of the videographer, and stood next to my husband and me behind our equipment while speaking loudly to the caller throughout the entire ceremony. Although countless guests turned around and glared at her, she never once stopped to consider that perhaps her phone conversation was disrupting the bride and groom as they recited their vows, or that her voice would be the only one picked up by the videographer's microphone. I felt so embarrassed I actually hid behind our equipment in order to avoid the murderous stares from the guests. Only after the ceremony was over did she finally end the call. To add insult to injury, her date arrived right before dinner wearing tennis shoes, shorts and a T-shirt with a nearly naked woman on the back. Our society seems to have lost touch with any inkling of decent conduct. -- STILL SHOCKED IN FLORIDA DEAR SHOCKED: How sad that a guest or someone in the wedding party was not assertive enough to escort the woman out of the room. However, since no one was willing to do so, whoever was officiating should have halted the ceremony and firmly instructed her to either end the call or complete it outside. P.S. It appears she and her date are made for each other.

You can also get an otterbox for your devices if you need to take them into a pool for whatever reason. There is also a way to waterproof any phone by filling it with a silicone filler. The phone will still work but you will void your warranty and make any future repairs impossible. My "favorites" are the ladies who stand yaking in the middle of the aisle totally oblivious to anything or anyone around them. Then they become indignant when you excuse yourself and ask them to move.

I hate, hate, hate it when someone is on the phone in the ladies room. Am I the only one who feels exposed when someone is connected and you are in a private moment?

AND ..... when at the checkout after everything's tallied and bagged, act surprised that you actually have to pay for the stuff while rooting thru all the "gotta have" junk in your purse for that scratched-up card that the card reader may or may not read ....... must be some kinda conspiracy to make sure everyone in line behind you has plenty of time to peruse all that last minute impulse buy junk at the checkout..... and get caught up on all that good celebrity gossip and space alien sightings. On the plus side, I did learn that Elvis is still around.

pkponder I am with you 100% and the worst is when they are saying hello and of course you think they are speaking to you and you start to reply and then they say wait someone in the next stall thinks I am talking to them. Just who do you call while sitting on the john?? I mean do you want to be the person on the other end of that call? NOT ME. ewewww.

Try being in a wheelchair or electric card and getting by those same people that are blocking the aisle. And if you accidentally touch them they look at you like they will sue you. Well get the heck out of everyones way.

and don't get me started on the bluethooth people that appear to be just talking to no one and you wonder are they talking to you? or are they just freaks? And unfortunately my husband now uses his bluetooth at work, I do not allow him to use it when he is with me or in public! Mine has never been out of it's box. I do not use my phone while driving and rarely in stores and NEVER in a bathroom. I guess I just do not need to speak to anyone that badly unless it is emergency related. and for that I have onstar.
