Cell Phone Decorum?
Comments (23)We still have a land-line but we don't have call waiting or caller ID. Imagine this, I just pick up the phone (when I feel like it) without knowing who is calling! I'm a risk taker and a rebel. I recently switched to a pay-as-you-go plan since I so rarely use my cell phone. There is a time and a place and sometimes a need for cell phone. I think most people do use their cell phone appropriately in public. But it's the one's who don't that can drive you crazy. Like the ones making/taking calls at the grocery story & then act like the REST of us are rude for going about our business & making it hard for them to hear. I guess I fit right into that Cornell study. I can tune out 2 people talking, cause I know they're not talking to me, but have more trouble tuning out the one-sided conversation. And the crazy stuff you hear! Personal details that shouldn't be shared while standing in line at Staples or the ever-exciting-so-glad-you-called "what are you doing? I'm in line at Staples". I have 2 phone addicted sisters. One checks her Iphone, texts, surfs the web 20+ times a hour. The other makes calls. I mostly ignore them & go about my business. I guess they wore me down and it doesn't bother me anymore. Texting is better because it's quiet but can still be rude if it means ignoring the person sitting there for texting something like "I'm in line at Staples" versus "meet me at the ER". I worry that texting's prevalence and general acceptance means more teens, those inexperienced drivers, will think it's fine to do while they're driving. And not just teen drivers, of course, but all drivers. I don't think calling & driving is a good idea but texting & looking down at a screen has got to be even worse. Sure, sure you only plan to look down for a second, like when changing the radio station, but what if it's a long text? or long response?...See MoreGrowing up without a cell phone ***language NOT edited
Comments (16)You want spoiled....read this. Our department provides laptops for our students to borrow for a week at a time. They come with a wireless mouse and a flashdrive. I have a student who borrowed the laptop and left the flashdrive in the library. The library called to let me know and I retrieved it. She came in and didn't apologize for losing it. Well, I let her borrow the laptop for another week and she again left the flashdrive in our computer lab. But this time some one walked off with it. She called and told me the day before the laptop was due back. I told her she would have to pay for the flashdrive and replace it. After being quite snotty (again with no apologies) she replaced the flashdrive. I then told her that her privilages were suspended for a month and she again got snotty. My boss finally told her that borrowing a laptop was a PRIVILAGE and not a RIGHT! My point is that she didn't care that she lost the flashdrive twice and she feels she is entitled to borrow the laptop. SamKaren your resident DJ...See MoreCell phone battery question
Comments (7)NiCD batteries, the older ones, had the memory issue. For those, its better to run them down as far as you can before charging or else their cycles become shorter. The newer batteries, NiMH, do not have a memory issue. However, they have a limited amount of times that they can be charged before they die completely. So, again, they will last longer if you run them down before charging. IMO, NiMH is still better, however, because the amount of time between charges does not decrease....See MoreWho's cell phone is umbilically attached?
Comments (39)I LOVE MY CELL PHONE! It is my camera. Video camera. My own private little juke box! My phone and address book. My calender and reminder service! Even my alarm clock! It is my only phone also. Not my internet connection though. If I lost my service I wouldn't really care. I still love my little toy! I have captured moments with grand children that I would have missed, had it not been for my cell phone close. Those videos make me smile anytime I watch them! I tend towards texting more than calling. I can shoot a quick text and get an answer, whenever.... saving me the time of a phone call. But no, we are not tied to one another. I catch flak all the time from people who expect an immediate response to a text or a phone call answered. Because they are glued to theirs, they think everyone is. I am amazed by people addicted to theirs. I worked as a cashier for years, and noted that many people handicap themselves with their phones. One hand is just as well be in a sling. They can't use it, because it holds their cell phone. When I am face to face with people and my phone goes off I silence it. I do not acknowledge the phone until I am alone. I am shocked at how many people think I am RUDE by doing that. I explain I am with them, giving them attention. Do they really want me to ignore them? But they seem more concerned about the fact I might ignore them when they text or call... sometime in the future.... over paying attention to them now. It makes me chuckle... I just don't get it. What doesn't make me chuckle is parents with children, who ignore and neglect their children, for their phones. I am seeing this more and more, and it angers and saddens me. Of course, when you see this, you see children acting wild. Negative attention from their parents is the only attention they get, but it still attention. The kids do whatever they can to get mommy to remember they are there. Here is where I have the urges Caroline has.....!!!! Caroline... the body slam.... LOL.... phone rage...! LOL The stupid conversations don't bother me, as much as amuse me. How people can forget they are not one-on-one alone talking to that person, I can't fathom! They publicize things you would think they wouldn't want to share with the world! High 5 to the young man ditching Miss Verizon!!!! I agree with kfca37... people are afraid to be alone......See Moretrekaren
