Good grief. I know better..it's navigation with an "i", not navagation. Wish we could edit our boo-boos. Sorry Miss Curry (my English teacher)...I won't do it again. - June

Seen something with a little search re: GPS (Garpin) as ebook readers..but havent seen the reverse..never looked too deep

XP will look more familiar than Vista coming from W2K. I think Dell can still supply XP, you may want to consider XP Professional as an upgrade, otherwise XP Home and Media is what I have familiarity with. Microsoft is about to release (when? don't now) SP3 for XP, so I'd expect it to be supported for some time. Vista has not been well received and I think it still has some driver problems. Best I can remember Dell, is set up on-line for you to pick a computer, desktop, one that looks about right, perhaps a little less than you want, because as you place you order you have a chance to upgrade every item from CPU to RAM to I/O... another though if you have a lot of bulky storage, consider adding a drive just for that purpose, but I'd opt instead for a USB connected external drive. This drive will have a lot less run time on it and should last "forever". I'm not trying to sell Dell, but can say I am happy with the 2005 Dell Desktop serving my wife, and I liked the ordering process on-line, you can now buy Dell from a brick-and-mortar store, Walmart, maybe Best Buys, still I think the on-line gives you more choices and customization. I also have in running shape, an HP notebook, and a Gateway notebook, both are good machines, the Gateway being my newest. I always buy on price/value, no brand loyalty in my mind, I've owned many, including a build you own from the motherboard up, and all have worked well.

Hmm, I had not read the whole MS page but basically you only need to follow the first 2 instructions. I have never had to use those other instructions myself. Remember that if you get flustered just click the Cancel button to get out of where you are. There is nothing to be afraid of when using System File Checker. You It simply goes through your computer checking all the operating system files and replaces those which are corrupt or missing. The need for the CD is so it can get the needed files to install for you. The slight downside is that it takes the computer back to when your particular CD was created which means you will be behind on security updates and possibly a service pack. No big deal there either, you simply go to the windows update site and the computer grabs whatever it needs. You are doing nothing wrong. Who knows why those files went missing. Perhaps/probably it was due to the power outage. You can of course extract and install each of those files if you wish to avoid using SFC. Follow the instructions here to do that for each file. You do not have to do them all at one time. Try one, see how it goes then do others as you feel up to the task.

the main things you need to consider do you want a reader that can handle many types of formats so you can get books from multiple websites, if you do then you should consider ones that use epub format that is the most common format and also what the library uses. For example kindle uses one specfic format(azw) that is more limited, you can get it from amazon and there are a few other free sites that offer that format. If you have one that uses epub you can get a copy of anyones epub, I have shared some of mine with others, you just email it to them and they put it on an sd card and into their reader, Amazon is more protected and they do have a lend feature now as do a few others. For free books you will find many many more free books in epub format since it is the most widely used format. You can of course buy them also at many online book sites. The android tablets which have ereader applications on them can be used for pretty much the same things you use a pc for, surfing the net, email, read magazines, watch youtube, listen to music and view pictures all of that plus you have a ton of games and other applications you can download for free and some for pay. IT is very easy to download books, most of them you just use the browser to go to the site you want to get the book from and choose to download it and it goes right to the device, I prefer to download all of my books to a folder on my computer then from there put them on my SD card and use the SD card in my tablets, that way I can move the SD card to which ever one I want to use. I keep all the books on the sd card and leave the memory on the device for the apps. I have put up some reviews on here and the computer help forums on a few different tablet/readers. I currently own a Pandigital Novel tablet, a Sylvania tablet and a lookbook color ereader. I enjoy them all. this is a very good blog I recommend to those looking it has a lot of good info. The eBook Reader Blog Plus they list places for free books quite often Prices vary dramatically, the sylvania tablet I have was just on sale for $99, a very good price for a starter that does a lot. You do not have to invest a lot of money to get a good tablet that does what you want.

The short answer is that's highly unlikely. The USB connection on the Nook is for power in, not power out so I doubt it would power the GPS and even if it would, you'd be missing drivers. So you'd plug it in but nothing would happen. Assuming the hardware would work, you'd be talking about installing a new, custom operating system.

Thanks for providing the logic behind your response. After posting the question, I thought about the OS issue. However, I didn't know enough about the USB to even consider the power in/out status.

I'll just stick to an e-reader for its intended purpose. - June
