As a general rule with fertilizer, more isn't better, either for the plants or the greater world. Excess fertilizer pollutes ground water and rivers from runoff. One of the greatest water pollution sources is homeowner fertilizers since companies like Scotts (who are after all in the business of selling things) have convinced us that we need to use fertilizer on all plants. Now I will climb back off my soap box. :>) Looking more carefully at your photo, I think the issue in your case is likely to be root competition from the Norway maple you seem to have them planted under based on the green flowers on the ground and the tree trunk visible in the background. If you do fertilize, don't just fertilize the shrubs - do the whole bed, but lightly. Otherwise you will be encouraging the maple to send more roots toward the Hydrangeas. It is notoriously difficult to get anything to grow well under Norway maples, so you want mulch and be sure to water the whole bed deeply when the soil feels dry a few inches down to have the best chance of success.

Thanks for the additional input, everyone. Re the city, yes we are very familiar with it. We currently live in the suburbs of that city. The area we're targetting is walking distance to stores, restaurants, parks, a grocery store, and a bike path running through the city that I bike on frequently. A long time ago, before kids, husband and I lived downtown in a different city, and I very much miss that. We have been "wandering" between open houses for a year or so, but started getting serious in May or so. And yes, we have a realtor who I formerly practiced law with, before she transitioned to being a realtor. Husband and I have been planning to move into the city after we retired; the change is that I decided about two years ago (after the early death of a family member) that I wanted to move sooner (while we're both still working). Lovely spouse and I had the "moving train" conversation months ago, and he understands this is a deal-breaker for me. Hubby's "I don't really love it," I've been thinking it means "I'm not mentally ready for this," but after sitting on this for a couple of days (we had some family issues arise), he seems more positive. He does tend to be a "no" person, and I tend to be a "let's figure this out" person. The questions re my being in a rush to move are very good questions. I am definitely an unreliable narrator, but I moved up my time frame some time ago, then delayed it due to other family matters, so this is not a new decision. Just that now, with last child on to the next phase of her life, we can pull the trigger on the next phase of our lives. Developments on the house front. Realtor agreed with hubby that the almost-perfect house that we viewed was a lot overpriced, and that we can sit for a bit, we don't have to jump on it. She's communicated with the selling realtor, who I assume has been told that we're possibly interested, except for the price, and that if we put in an offer, it would be very strong, with only an inspection condition. And of course, we hope the selling realtor will let us know if she gets, or is about to get, another offer. AND, two other houses came on the market that fit what we're looking for, not as wonderful as the other house, smaller, with fewer bells and whistles, but much lower priced. They are both less than one block outside the area we've been looking in, but in a direction that's acceptable to me and the realtor - husband will see how he feels about it when we view them tonight. My list of wants/needs is shorter than his, and I'm a small house philosophy person anyway, so I would be ok with either of these places (if I liked them after actually visiting). Regardless, they will give us something to compare the other house to.

Well, I have once again started way too many seeds, potted out and started hardening off. Now it's supposed to get back down to the 30s Monday and Tuesday nights (I'm outside of DC), so my kitchen and dining room look like a greenhouse. Meanwhile, I did all of this knowing that we were going to be re-landscaping the front area of the house, which is in an ell, and sort of enclosed, and where everything will be/should be going. As I haven't heard anything back from the landscapers for two weeks, I am emailing and bothering them and looking for new estimates. I shouldn't have started any seeds without a proposal and start date in my hand, but when it's 8 weeks before frost, seems like you have to just go ahead and do it. Clearly, I don't have any sense or any patience at all. It will be tomatoes in pots on the patio again, and me going to buy extra pots. When we lived in Northern California, I once let Romanesco cauliflowers go 180 days (to successful heading up!!!) because it was winter and we had space, and I think I expended all of my patience then. Now, since I wasn't able to plant eggplant, tomatoes, okra, etc., there, I am just a mess of nerves and impatience and want it to start warming up NOW. :D

gra8fulgal, I don't know how I missed your answer to my original questions. I see that you have changed your Realtor, which is a good thing given the answers you provided. Every agent works differently. Some are much more diligent/detailed/creative than the others. Sounds like you have found a much better fit for your property. To answer your unasked question: Zillow pulls directly from the MLS. So do some of the other services like Realtor.com, trulia and other websites. So if the listing agent has put in the same photos multiple times in the MLS, that is exactly what shows in Zillow and the other websites. That happens to be one of my pet peeves. When bringing out a professional photographer they shoot many, many photos IME. 100 shots is not unusual. We, as Realtors, don't get all the 100 photos but the best 35 to 40 or so that have been edited by the photographer. My personal POV is show the best 35-40 shots or even a few more but don't duplicate photos. Check with your new agent. She should be able to go back to the photographer and get additional photos so the property and house can be showcased effectively without duplicates. That section you refer to in Zillow is physically filled out by the listing agent after it is uploaded to Zillow. I like to have the seller mention their key points in their own words so it looks like the people that live there and love it have added to the listing. This should be done now. Your new agent can do it with your thoughts. One more idea: when there is a property that is tough to price, it is a very good idea to bring in an appraiser that is familiar with your area. The more complex your property, the more important it is to have an appraisal done up front. Complex can mean several things, including lack of recent comparable sales.

I know mine are. I have little pains coming off the outter side of my right hand. I call it "mouseittis". I've been transfering contact information from emails to a spread sheet for my class reunion this summer.

But I didn't just partner up 60 plus people! UGH!

A few notes..LOL I have a whole notepad sheet of notes. Then rewrote some more specific ones on another half sheet and keep it in my purse. LOL
I can't decided what "local" thing to send.
I've got the handmade/homemade down. I even know where to go for a look at books.......It's the which local item would be best...ISSUE...

I knew I'd have to hit a snag somewhere along the line. LOL

I also have a whole sheet of paper full of notes. I feel like a stalker as well because this person posts in places besides from cooking. Some of the conversations were interesting but iZ think I would have given myself away if I posted. LOL

I have way to many local things to choose from. Being a tourist destination and quaint to boot Vermont has a lot. I really need more info to narrow things down. I figure my partner has until the weekend to answer any questions I may have by posting. What is the likelihood they will stumble upon the info I need? Otherwise I will just guess.

btw, in the interest of Market Research I treated myself to a cup Lake Champlain chocolate Aztec Hot Coco. Yum, but not really spicy.
