How Many Have Tried The New Bosch Dishwashers

It's been a while since Bosch introduced their new lines of 3-shelf dishwashers made in the USA. Now I wonder how many at this forum have tried one and what their experiences were. I am talking about models like the SHX68T55UC.

Bosch dishwashers have always been finicky, when they work correctly they are nice dishwashers, however when they don't they are normally hard to diagnose, and are usually expensive to fix.

BK - you're so full of hooey one gets the impression you are a Whirlpool troll.

Bosch DWs are fine and their quality control is way better than average. Miele is better, but costs a little but more generally.

Generally, problems arise from two areas: improper install, or user error. Neither of which are the factory's fault.

We put a new generation modle in a kitchen last month and I don't think most people could tell a difference. Best I tell, most of the changes have to do with the manufacturing process, packaging and install ease. They still have that Bosch look, feel, and control features.

My 2¢ on this: I'm inclined to preach about making repairs and not sending workable appliances to the landfill or recycling. Your existing DW might just have a plugged line. However, wanna guess what I did when my early-1998 SHU3xx model stopped working back in 2012? I took the discount for a replacement dishwasher. Maybe an easy decision for me as a DIY project. It really is as easy as Dan1888 says. So the installation should not be expensive if you have to pay for it. A repair will require pulling the DW out, disconnecting and reconnecting, and then putting it back in, anyway. Beyond that, my on-line research back in late 2012 was that Bosch DWs and other higher quality DW brands had average expected lifespans of 12 years but some lesser brands were only lasting 7 years on average. (Lots of posting here with much gnashing of teeth and tales of woe about DWs back then, too.) You have already replaced a motor at seven years, so it is hard to say when you might need another one. My Bosch was 15 years old and had never needed any work. It might have continued chugging along after the board replacement. Eventually, it would have needed other repairs. For instance, replacing the detergent dispenser door when the latch springs wore out. Then a new door seal. Eventually, a new pump, etc. I decided to skip the hassle and bought an SHE55xx series model as the replacement. As far as I could tell, the new one did not have any more electronics to break than the old one. However, the boards are supposedly better built now. The boards from the late 90's and early 2000's were kind of on the cheap side all across the appliance industry. With some legal pushing, Bosch owned up to the issue and upgraded its boards while instituting the program for the board replacement/discounted new units. (Whirlpool also had problems with its DW boards. According to news reports, DWs made back then by Whirlpool were blamed for several kitchen fires. Whirlpool chose to fight with customers. AFAIK, that fight is still going on.) Anyway, my replacement SHE55 runs noticeably quieter than the old SHU. (More sound proofing.) The new one does take 15 to 20 minutes longer for the regular cycles than the old one did (varies a bit between loads.) The new one has more capacity. Also, the new one allows raising and lowering the upper rack, a feature which I find very useful. (I cannot recall if the SHU4xx series had that feature or not.) So, despite my preferences for keeping appliances running, I have been pleased with the replacement.

Just wanted to give an update. I contacted our builder rep who said to put in a written request to the warranty department on their website, which, by the way, says it could take between 30-60 days for the scheduled appointment. I did that last night & this morning I got a call from the plumber saying he will be at the house in 10 minutes. I quickly called a friend who has a key to our house & luckily, she was home, so she let him in. It was just a matter of the hot water line not being connected correctly. So all his fixed & amazingly fast I might add. Thanks to everyone who offered suggestions!

Just to add a data point, I will never buy KA again. Two years ago, KA actually bought back my top-of-the-line dw at full price because the board kept fritzing out and they couldn't replace it. So, because KA did the right thing, I bought another top-model KA (KDTM404) because I'm naive like that. After one year, the new model stopped cleaning dishes. It's out of mechanical warranty by this time and, not wanting to endure any more of KA's "customer service," I and my engineer dad embarked upon repairs. We narrowed the problem down to the pump assembly and purchased another (over $200) to replace it. Get the dw apart and, surprise, the assembly doesn't fit. It's identical to the old assembly, but something is off. I disassemble the old assembly and discover that the metal impeller in the old pump has shredded itself. So we frankensteined the old assembly to the pump from the new assembly and after a weekend's worth of labor the dw now works again, who knows for how long. None of this answers the question of why a pump in a year-old, very expensive dishwasher would spontaneously self-destruct. No, I do not place auto parts, road gravel, or shrapnel in the dw. It also doesn't answer why KA can't make parts correctly. So no more KA. Ever.

@whirlpool_trainee, I also open my door to let it air dry but the blast of steam that comes out is fairly substantial. It is hot and humid a lot of months here and I always hate doing this in the summer. Plus, I wonder if the sudden steam coming out is good for the finish on surrounding cabinets. I also wish I could say the Bosch remains quiet. It started out so quiet but now it sounds just like any other DW. For $1000, I expected better. You can hear all the sloshing and the circulation motor humming during the circulation cycle. Absolutely no need for a light shining on the floor as I can hear it several rooms away. I complained to Bosch but manufacturer's warranty is expired as the unit is 18 months old. I clean the filter every two weeks by removing it completely and hosing and brushing it off, use the newer DW cleaning tabs that are now available here in the States and run an empty cycle. I have examined the impeller for something that might be stuck but didn't find anything. I am at a loss. I have an extended warranty but complaining about the increased noise level is not grounds for service according to the repair firm. They told me it must stop washing, draining, etc. I am alone here but given the difficulty in the way it loads, the need to open the door to a blast of steam for adequate drying and the now louder noise (way, way over 40 Db), I am very disappointed and will never get another Bosch. I know it is a beloved machine by many, just not me. So to the OP, I think the Miele is a good choice and I hope you find your answer about whether you can add panels after purchase. That question interests me as well.

I just purchased a Bosch Ascenta about 6 weeks ago. It's not a 3 shelf model, but thought you might like to hear my experience with what I did buy.

I had a Bosch previously in another home and appreciated how well it worked and how quiet it was, so when I needed a DW in my current home, I didn't hesitate to purchase another Bosch. (I also am very conscious about where items are made and take that into consideration.)

I must say, this new Bosch is VERY quiet (as they all are), but I am still not sure I am as impressed with its cleaning results. It is pretty bare bones, no fancy settings, only choice between: AutoWash, NormalWash and Heavy Wash I believe and Sanitize (whatever that does). I only used it maybe 8-10 times, but find there is usually a few pieces I have to either wash by hand or put in for another round. I am still experimenting with what wash cycle to use. (I was a bit surprised because I remember being 100% pleased with the cleaning results of my previous Bosch, purchased about 14 years ago).

My other comment would be about the racks: not sure what it is, but it seems to be difficult to get the dishes to stand properly...it feels a bit small or the tines feel too close together--again I am still getting used to it, so maybe I will figure it out. You might want to make sure the configuration is going to work for you in that model you are considering. The bottom rack also feels a bit wobbly and comes completely out of the dishwasher--don't remember that happening with my last Bosch. When you guide it back in, it likes to slam against the back of the washer.

I wanted a white dishwasher and found it extremely weird that i had to "SPECIAL" order it to get white. Times have changed. My last Bosch was Stainless and had to be "special" ordered at that time.

I have the SHV7ER53UC/50 - the 800 Plus model that is now is the SHV7PT53UC with the 3rd rack. I love the 3rd rack, it really increases the space in the lower rack and the silverware come out nice and clean. Overall, the dishwasher cleans well and is super quiet and holds a lot of dishes. I agree the tines seem rather close together, not really a problem but just something to get used to. I'm glad I read the manual: the default setting was to not add the rinse aid, but I was able to change it through a rather complicated and non-intuitive process. I could also change the final rinse temperature so that the dishes dry better.
Consumer Reports says every dishwasher cleans well as long as they are installed properly - the difference between them are the features. In our previous home, we had a GE Profile and a Whirlpool. Both cleaned well, but the Bosch holds more and is so quiet, most of the time you don't know its running except for the red light that shines on the floor.
