Sort of like the time, tandem driving back from skiing through no man's land Nebraska ( sorry Stacy...but you know where I mean!) and son's VW Sirocco started acting strange, cutting in and out.....and at the top of a hill it quit and he coasted off I 80 and into the town of York and into a gas station!
Well you know how they are...it's a "furren car" and I don't know nothin' about it....if it was a Ford or a Chevy I could fix it....but let's see what the boss says when he comes in.
Well, we all piled into our car, left non essentials in the VW and went across the parking lot to a motel.
When the boss came in, he said he had just hired a mechanic whow as a VW expert....likely the only person in 400 miles who could fix it.....and while we had to leave the car, as it needed a part....it got fixed and didn't have to be towed hundreds of miles.

We live in a small town and it's really hard sometimes to get a repairman or plumber and when you do you pay twice or three times as much for travel, plus you didn't have to buy a new one!

Don't you love it when things like that happen? It's like fixing the tv with a good whack on the side. Yeah -- go get those tickets. Your stars are lined up just right.

Only a little thing, but I was buying DH a six-pack of specialty beer the other day, in a warehaouse shop with concrete floors. As I lifted the pack off the shelf, I found the cardboard sleeve was a little torn and the two end bottles slid out of the sleeve and started heading for the floor =:-O. Unable to do anything about it, I was waiting for the smash of glass and the fizz of warm beer shooting all around the place, but... silence! They had landed in my shoulder bag!! Talk about a "whew!" moment.
So glad your fridge got fixed straight away, gbsim! Ours died one New Year's a few years back- and here it's usually 100F+ at New Years :-( Why do things always pick awkward times to go wrong?

What a great thread with which to start or finish a year off.
We travel in a vintage 30 year old motor home of which there were only 150 made. On a trip through the Southern Appalachia Mountains the brakes went out in Eljah, GA. There was no lift in the town big enough to lift the motor home and we were sent to a repair shop way out in the country. I drove there using my emergency brake and downshifting to stop and slow down. When we arrived the shop did indeed have a jack big enough to get our motor home off the ground. The mechanic took off the front brakes, walked into the back room and returned after about fifteen minutes with a dusty box of parts. He smiled at me and said, "I have your brakes in stock." I think it was a lucky day for both of us.

Having lived out in the sticks for many years I know how you feel. Getting/scheduling service is a PIA for sure. Yes, go buy that ticket!!

Annie, it's not really that big of a handbag, but it's stuffed so full I guess it's nice and wide on top, just big enough to cradle the bottles that landed in exactly the right spot. Talk about lucky!

Colleen, you were living right! I can picture the bottles breaking and spending the rest of the day in shoes that smelled like beer! Ick!

My fridge continues to tick along and wow things are cold in there. I hadn't realized that it had probably been too warm for a while now.

What a great story Grace :) We had a long power outage a few months ago and I felt like I won the lottery when at the end everything in our two freezers was still rock hard.

My DS & DDIL have a DCS range. They also live in the sticks & get charged excessively for repairs as well as it taking forever and a day to get parts. The first 6 months they owned the range the darn oven racks wouldn't slide out. The mechanism that makes them roll was defective. That feature was one of the primary reasons they chose the DCS. I listened to their complaints for months! It's fixed now but one of the burners isn't working correctly. (Sigh) They tell me it's like owning a Porsche. You have to expect repairs to be costly & more frequent than a Honda. I say, "Phooey!"

No, NO Sherry, you can't have the Subzero!!

I made do for years with a small refrig/freezer that we bought used when we got married. It was like doing a jigsaw puzzle to get food in and out of it.

A year of so after the fourth son was born, I just couldn't fit enough food in it to keep up with the appetites and went out looking for a new one. Accidentally stumbled on to this Subzero as a floor model that they had discounted. We had to work on the cabinets to build it in and it is only the refrigerator (no freezer) so we have to step into the laundry room for ice etc where our big freezer is, but HEY it is wonderful!!! Huge with four BIG crisper drawers and space galore. One of the best buys I've ever made.

Always a little strange when new people open it up and stand there looking for the freezer.

May have used up some of my luck as today I'm at the hospital with DH who is about to have totally unexpected gall bladder surgery.... but the fridge is still working!!!!
