When you're comparing meds with your mother. LOL! I got a blood clot in my leg this summer (they think its because of all the driving I do for work). So I'm on blood thinners. My Mom takes blood thinners for a heart condition. Maybe I should change my initial statement to: if your comparing meds with your mother for the same condition.

Some places give you a senior discount at 55....others make you wait until you are 60 and still others until you are 65.
I got a little annoyed at McDonalds last week when I ordered a small drink....and as he handed me my change, I said..Oh make that a senior....and he said I already gave you the discount.
A local grocery store gives a 10% discount to everyone over 60 on Wednesdays...but they don't offer...if you forget to ask...too bad!

DH turned 50 this summer and he got an offer from AARP to join. It turns out that all of his 50 YO friends have gotten them too. So I guess AARP says 50 is a senior. They would probably make it 40 if they could convince people to join then!

I always thought that corporate retirement age - 65ish - made you a senior.

Where I work, my boss doesn't offer senior discounts. Mostly because he's cheap, but also because most of the seniors he knows are richer than he is. lol

AARP starts hounding people when they hit 50, I think, Jeapordy's senior tournament is for those 55 and up, you can take early retirement at age 62, and start drawing SS payments. But I agree with Lou. "When you feel like one!"

I started getting AARP propaganda when I was 48!

But I think it is as the old saying goes "Youre as old/young as you feel". Most of the time I feel like I am 30-ish, but there are days I feel like I am 100!

A "senior" is someone older than you are.

I laugh to recall my mother reading that paper when she was about 90, and she got quite outraged about a story of an "elderly" woman in a car accident who was only 65. Mother said she didn't deserve the label of "elderly".

One local community here was offering free emergency cell phones to seniors (so they could call 911 when the inevitable stroke or heart attack occured) and the minimum age was 50! I about fell out of my chair. That AARP stuff is rediculous too. Not many people during today's economy can 'retire' at age 50.

But in answer to your question, for men the answer is: When you have more hair growing out of your ears and nose than is covering your head.

I'm a senior if there is a discount involved, or I don't want to do something. I'm not a senior when it comes to doing something I want to do, or cleaning out the barn, or pruning the orchard, or canning, or picking vegetables. When it comes to housecleaning, I'm positively geriatric!

I am far too immature to ever become a senior citizen. :)

When you break your hip like I did, then you FEEL like a senior especially when you have to use a walker everywhere. Though they called me "the youngster" when I was at the rehab center, since I was only 57 and everyone was over 70+.

A senior is someone at least 5 years older than I am.

However, if someone *mistakes* me for a senior & gives me a discount, or if I tell them I'm a senior & they believe it, well, what a smart young person I am!

Booberry, I have one suggestion for you. Compression socks. You will feel younger instantly, and your legs will take better care of you. Yes, I also suggested them for my mother, because I wear them! She has her ankles back.

Well, my dad used to say that it was when your greed in demanding a discount from everyone just because you were still alive managed to surpass your enjoyment in being considered too young for it. I think he was about 75 when he said that.

Oh! Linda, I'm with you. I love a good observation, and Bean's dad had it goin' on!

I'm 39 and I really began to wonder if I was turning into an old woman when I discovered that my grandmother and I use the same brand of bra. Then I decided that no, I am not turning into an old lady - my granny just happens to think young.

I do wear compression socks for long trips. Wearing them makes me feel like a little old lady. Although not having swollen ankles is nice!

Booberry, Well...I confess to wearing them now. Since mine are in basic black, I don't feel like a little old lady. (Not because of those anyway!) I just figure I'm putting on my black socks! If I want to jazz up my footwear, I wear other things over them. I don't know why, but my legs feel immediately better when I'm wearing them, so they're the first thing I do when getting dressed. I woke up this morning with legs aching, so on they went. For me, it's the difference between being able to do something as simple as making a meal or going shopping. Without them, I have to quit too soon. I'd rather keep going!

compression socks - Where do you buy them? I had to wear some white up-to-my-hip ones after my hip surgery and they did make my legs feel better. I would like to get some knee-high black ones.

Clare, I got mine at my local CVS. I like the black Futuro Trouser Socks, since they don't have a heel. It all springs back like new after washing.

I think most drug stores carry them. I think Walmart does too. I bought mine at Kinney Drugs. I have white knee high socks.

I get mine from the VA Hospitital. They even gave me a Metal Rack to slide the Stocking on,
so it is easier to put them on your leg. They are knee length.
