Painting my vanity cabinets..ideas for color?

hi bathroom forum folks...

I have those orangy oak cabinets in my master bathroom. I was thinking a little paint wouldn't hurt them. My countertop is some creamy white material and my shower is white tiles with light blue accent tiles. What color should I paint the cabinets? I actually am considering a taupe color like sand. My bedroom,which is all connected to the bath, has pale blue walls, white shutters. It has a beachy feel to it all. Any thoughts or other suggestions? I love visuals it you have one!

When you look through the pics in the linked ideabook, you'll figure out quickly that my rec is to go very dark w/the cabinets.

My new bath will be primarily light counters, light shower tiles w/some kind of accent (probably sticking w/a greyish), and my cabinetry will be deep brown/espresso, like my kitchen cabs. All the woodwork in the bath will be dark (baseboards, door and window trim, panelled soffits), and I think it will be great w/marble counters, maybe a light grey glass tile in shower w/pieces of marble for accent. I do want to bring in a color in the backsplash and use it in shower - maybe a light blue?

HOWEVER, the minute I read your post, all I could see was the dove grey cabinetry I've been seeing and have fallen in love with! I'm going to do all grey painted built-in shelving in my library (which is a big step for me, my last house had no painted woodwork, not even any stain - just the natural colors of the mixed varieties of wood I used.)

I totally get what you're picturing about a beachy feel, coming in from your bedroom. My only concern is I've seen several baths lately that mixed taupe/sandcolored tiles on floor and in shower then used blue glass tiles for accents, and they just looked kind of "off" together. It didn't feel like the styles were headed the same way. That's what I'm afraid would happen w/taupe cabinets. Of course, some of that would depend on the style of the cabinets themselves. I hope the pics I found on houzz.com will help - I've added comments to a couple of them to explain why I thought they might be inspirational. Good luck!

thank you so much for your detailed and thoughtful response. The link you provided is great and I will spend some time looking through it.

I also lean towards dark wood and just recently remodeled my kitchen using a very dark stain. I also remodeled my powder room using a dark vanity. Love how both rooms turned out. My first thought was to paint my master vanity black...but then thought it might throw it all off somehow. Now I'm thinking that is the way to go, as I've seen some pictures in your link that I really like and it just might work. I think gray would clash with my creamy counter, unless it is a very warm gray...but then that takes me back to taupe. I definitely need to bring home some samples for visual purposes.

You've given me something to think about...Thanks again!

I wouldn't do that, it's going to make them look dated & unprofessional. I'd paint the cabinets a soft white. It will help open up the space & keep the rooms looking fresh. If you're apprehensive about doing that because the counters are white, add some off white glaze to help add some contrast.

Painted oak looks terrible. The irregular grain surface show and make the paint job look like----well---painted oak. Which looks terrible. I have had discussions with several home owners about painting oak and have a apinted piece of scrap I keep to show them what I mean. So far, 100% have decided painting oak looks terrible. However, if the grain is filled and leveled, then it will be smooth. That takes a lot of work---and is virtually impossible to do with profiles and contoured surfaces. Cleaning up/refinishing is the least expensive and easiest way to try. Staining can be done---darker only and all the old finish has to be removed. Another upgrade is new doors and veneering the face frames of the cabinet cases to match the new doors. The sky is the limit to what you can do using this method---limited only by the availibility of doors/veneers. Veneering is simply glueing a thin piece of wood to something. With newer veneer adhesives, veneer can be applied DIY with a roller and trimmer.

There are some articles online about removing permanent marker from wood. Try to remove it and do simple things first as you may change your mind about what you want to do as you progress. See what you think after the walls are cleaned up / painted. I would next paint the backsplash. I would look into cladding the island in beadboard - not sure if that can be done - there are some construction adhesives that stick to about anything. I have oak cabinets and am fine with them - but I am not living with all the other surfaces. I might remove all the uppers on the sink wall. My kitchen has about half the cabinets yours does and I get along fine - with 4 kids:) This is my wood kitchens idea book with both new and older refreshed wood kitchens. It might give you some ideas as to paint or working with the older cabinets - especially if a few years turns into 10 years and a new kitchen is still not in the budget. https://www.houzz.com/ideabooks/75202366/list/wood-kitchens Sometimes a new house has unexpected expensive cost - new roof or furnace and the more cosmetic projects have to wait. I live happily with my oak cabinets, but I agree that there are surfaces in your kitchen which would drive me batty, and if nothing else I would attack with paint those areas before the cabinets.

no, don't go dark. what you could do if frame out your mirror in a natural wood. if you can DIY (look online for tutorial) you can literally make this for $25 or so. or, try running a wood shelf across the spot like this. OR, get some wood shelves. you really need something of interest over the toilet. it's just a blank space these are super easy to do your self. (measure the size you want and have the store cut them for you. don't use those cheap looking ready made shelves. just get a 7" or 8" wide board, cut it to size, sand it, stain it, poly it. attach to the studs, or get some brackets for the shelf to sit on bring in some art, faux plants, whatever or try a glass one and decorate like this even a colorful piece of art, larger frame and a vase w/a leaf in it would perk up the spot save up until you can afford a new vanity/top. look on sites like craigslist or offerup for deals. right now, upgrading your vanity light would do wonders. get something that points down with 3 lights. Check LampsplusOpenbox for better deals try a rug w/some color or texture, maybe switch out the cabinet hardware. that would also help And a shower curtain. keep it pulled closed. Did you know you can paint and stencil those ceramic floor tiles?
