Paint Design Dilemma Bathrooms

Help with new wall color and possibly painting the vanity

My current wall color is antique rose from Magnolia. I chalk painted the vanity years ago and distressed it. White was too white, cream looked bad, so i just kept mixing til it looked ok. So im wondering if i should go dark with the caninets. Or leave it? Help!

no, don't go dark.

what you could do if frame out your mirror in a natural wood. if you can DIY (look online for tutorial) you can literally make this for $25 or so.

or, try running a wood shelf across the spot like this.

OR, get some wood shelves. you really need something of interest over the toilet. it's just a blank space

these are super easy to do your self. (measure the size you want and have the store cut them for you. don't use those cheap looking ready made shelves. just get a 7" or 8" wide board, cut it to size, sand it, stain it, poly it. attach to the studs, or get some brackets for the shelf to sit on

bring in some art, faux plants, whatever

or try a glass one and decorate like this

even a colorful piece of art, larger frame and a vase w/a leaf in it would perk up the spot

save up until you can afford a new vanity/top. look on sites like craigslist or offerup for deals.

right now, upgrading your vanity light would do wonders. get something that points down with 3 lights.

try a rug w/some color or texture, maybe switch out the cabinet hardware. that would also help

And a shower curtain. keep it pulled closed.

I reaaaaly love the idea of the wood shelves above the toilet. And the upgraded light. Yes, I need that badly. Thanks. Whenever I look at it my first thought is always “what color and what should I paint now?” Maybe it’s time to step away from the brush 😂

nosoccermom, I have considered it, I saw your posts about it and yours looks great! I ordered the samples though and none really looked good in my rooms. The colors that company has are too busy and/or dark for these bathrooms, especially with the existing floor. However I did find some patterned vinyl contact papers I am considering - they have some other granite patterns and terrazzo and marble, too! Check these out: Terrazzo marble brown marble I just am having hard time envisioning an overall color scheme for some reason, I don't want to decide on the countertop without considering the floor and how the wall color will tie it together.

I live in the South where painted brick is very common, and I love it. However, I don't think your brick is ugly at all! Maybe it's the effects of the sun fading it, or whatever, but it actually looks quite nice to me. My concern about painting your brick would be the amount of sun you say your house gets, as it would likely cause your paint to fade unevenly. Also, as someone mentioned previously, painting your brick would just create a different huge block of color to look at, and won't necessarily help to reduce the impression of size. If I were you, I would give my shutters and trim a fresh paint job; Charleston Green shutters and door with a warm white trim would go great with that color brick. Replace the brass door knocker and handle with some something less bright (even antiqued brass would look better). I also like the idea of the planter boxes for the upper windows to add a little softness and to visually break up the facade a bit. You will never achieve a cottage look with your home, as its overall design is inherently more formal, but I think these few smaller changes will go a long way towards helping it feel more cozy and warm and reduce the impression of size. Once you have your house spruced up, deal with the problems of the retaining wall separately. I agree that a painted retaining wall would not look good at all. I like the idea of a stacked stone or similar material.

With no natural light in the room, you want a wall color which will show true when the over head lights go on. Personally, I would wallpaper. As for a paint color, you can choose anything with love to go with Chantilly Lace. With its high LRV, it has almost no undertone.

I added some more photos. if you want to paint,,,,,,,lol. the floor tiles!

I would do the shelves or art, change your hardware to something a bit nice, a new light, AND if you can swint it, the new vanity. (or, go by a fabricators warehouse and see what remnants are going in the trash. you'd be surprised what they throw away. for $50 you could pick something up and have them cut the sink hole for you ($50 for sink. ) Again, look online. I've seen brand new vanities/top/sink for $300. People buy the wrong size, or they move and don't like what's there.

maybe even find an older Oak one w/shaker doors. Now THAT one you could paint. (not chalk paint) Sand it, prime it, sand again, and then paint. (use the spray primer since it's easier. always fine sand w/220. wipe clean. NOW paint. do it outside. )

Or even the black. find an older vanity you can spruce up. painting over yours isn't going to look good
