Painting Oak Kitchen cabinets - need help picking the color
Comments (7)This is timely because I have similar cabinets. I've been looking for whites that aren't too bright. I just got an estimate from a cabinet painter; his proposal included 2 coats of oil-based primer and then 2 coats of either oil or water-based paint. Here's what I've found in other threads: BM Linen White: SW Alabaster: SW Casa Blanca: SW Dover White: Here is a link that might be useful: Instructions on painting cabinets...See MorePainting oak cabinets--Advice needed
Comments (4)There have been many postings on painting oak that will answer your questions. I recall some saying that trying to fill the grain doesn't always work out that well. It seems they say do a couple coats with an oilbased primer. Even so, your grain will show slightly, but most of the pics posted still look very nice. You should be able to treat your end panels the same I would think. If you wanted to add beadboard, I would think liquid nails with a few finish nails would work....See Morepainting kitchen oak cabinets
Comments (8)I painted the oak cabinets in our first kitchen. I cleaned them, sanded them, primed them, sanded them, painted them, sanded them, and painted them. Held up pretty well, though I did have a couple of chips over the course of about three years. But you could still see the oak grain through the paint job, which was okay with me. If you want no oak grain to show through you'll need a couple of extra steps in there, I think--filler? It is a lot of work. We were young and broke and didn't have kids yet. So it was worth it to me then....See MoreDrowning in a sea of oak - Need help with kitchen remodel ideas!
Comments (18)Hi everyone! Thank you SO MUCH for all of the feedback - beyond helpful and appreciated. So, looking back at the photos, the color/character that comes through on the photographs aren't quite true to the real deal. While the cabinets aren't the typical honey oak, they aren't the walnut with character like the photos look to show. Either way, I'm definitely hearing that many of you think I should not paint them - well noted! We're not quite sold on painting them and have been nervous to do so - we've heard oak doesn't paint well etc. With that said, I think I could have been more thorough in my original post in what I think the kitchen is lacking - which is contrast. While the pics don't show it the best, the flooring is the exact same color as the cabinets - and the countertop and backsplash don't add any contrast. I'm liking the idea of changing the countertops and backsplash (put in by previous owner which I've wanted to change anyways) and putting in runners! Brilliant! As for the island - it is really too small and we would like to have island seating for entertaining etc. - people tend to just stand around the kitchen when we have friends or family over and it would just make it more inviting to have island seating. My thought is to have a custom island made - and paint it cream for a contrast. I then plan on adding a cozy little area in front of the fireplace with a few chairs and eating in the dining room instead of the kitchen - old school style! I like the idea of a hood over the stove - how much does this usually run... ballpark? I also like the idea of white trim - is painting trim a bad idea - would you suggest just replacing it altogether?...See MoreBeverlyFLADeziner
