Pics of DD's Kitchen / Need Ideas for Remodel
Comments (41)Thanks for all the recent posts! It is heartwarming to see all the thoughtful responses. Raenjapan - The kitchen you posted is a standout for lots of reasons, not the least of which is the unusual color combo. Even if they go w/ cream cabs, it offers some ideas they can use - such as removing the soffet and adding simple crown molding. They are inclined to go with the Ikea apron sink that someone recommended in an above post, and your pic shows how much character that could add to a small space. alywa - Thanks so much for posting your before/after pics! Your cabs are so similar to theirs it offers a real life picture of how they would look painted w/new hardware. I can understand why people love your new kitchen. What an inspiration for someone attempting a redo on a tight budget. Thank you for sharing! divamum - I remember liking Celtic Moon's kitchen, too, though I'm not clear on the details...I'll try searching, too. rosie - Groom2b has weighed in on the plan I proposed. The idea of a baquette is a keeper with everyone, though he and DD would prefer it under the bay window as opposed to in the den area. Like you, I think it will be the most coveted seat! A few people have suggested opening the wall between the kitchen and den. Though it would bring in more natural light, and more floor plan possibilities, there's no other place to move the range and hood. Thanks again, for all your help and suggestions!...See MorePlease help me with kitchen remodeling ideas
Comments (16)buehl, question 1, I only got a quote from my regular painter who quoted me $1800 for the refacing. I don't think that quote is realistic as he is not a cabinet guy and simply gave me a low quote to get the business. question 2, I ordered 5 cabinets from Craftmaid to be assembled for my new island. That alone costs me $2500 and $500 labor to assemble. The total cost will be approaching $20k if I were to buy new cabinets, instead of refacing. But I see what you're saying. I certainly don't have a $20k budget but also realize that refacing won't be as low as $1800 either. Another consideration I didn't mention is our living room located next to kitchen has fire place, book shelfs, storage cabinets with exactly the same oak finishing too. I guess those should also be refaced if I chose the refacing option....See MoreHelp: Small kitchen remodel - Granite/Oak
Comments (28)homebodyoasis, solid wood cabs are a nice thing to have. But did you know that you would gain more storage per cab with new cabs? I am replacing my 20 yr old oak cabs and I'm tickled at how much storage space I'm gaining with the same footprint; 3" more depth and width per drawer! In a small space, that would be value added. I'd rather do that and have laminate counters any day. But those are my priorities. I was all set to do a cosmetic update about 5 years ago but once I started looking at my kitchen with a critical eye, I decided to wait until we could afford to replace the cabs. Soooo glad I did. I can not wait to start my remodel. It will be worth the wait. (Our wait wasn't just for f1nancial reasons. We had family obligations arise during that time period and they took precedence.) Good luck with your remodel! Have you done a search for oak cabinets threads on this forum? Updating "golden" oak kitchens has been discussed multiple times so you're sure to find information you can use. Do a search via Google not the forum's search engine (it's rather useless). Comments (2)You poor thing. This sounds like you have so many issues facing a remodel, that you are simply going to have to have professional help in order to even contemplate a working kitchen. You need a professional evaluation of your slab. You need a really good plumber who can help you plan for a location for a vent. If those beams need to stay there, then you'll need a drywaller to cover up the exposed beam. If the cracks are minor and not expected to get any worse (cause of the cracks has been mitigated), then an excellent flooring contractor can help you decide how to handle a floor. But a floor has to be very, very level before almost all types of flooring are laid. I'm guessing that you are on a significant budget? Why don't you measure out your room carefully, on graph paper or using a program, down to the inch or half-inch. Also show a drawing of how the rooms adjoining the kitchen (e.g. the whole downstairs) are laid out. You are not ready to order cabinets of any kind at this point, you have a lot of planning to do. The folks over on the kitchen forum will be a BIG help to you. Be sure and explain what your budget is. Getting ahead of ourselves here: forget the RTA cabinets, and look at IKEA. IKEA has top of the line Blum hardware, easy to plan/build/use sturdy cabinets. They have a sale twice a year (might have just started) and you get even a better deal. What's nice is their Kitchen Planner which lets you see a 3D image of whatever you design easily in the program, and then it prices it out for you. You really can't go wrong with those cabinets. If the doors aren't perfect for you, you can get great replacement doors specifically for Ikea cabs at Scherr's or SemiHandmade. But again, you need to have layout issues and construction issues solved first....See MoreAnglophilia
