'critical' ZoneAlarm Security Update

We have the free version of ZoneAlarm. Starting about a day ago, a pop-up box delivers the following message....

A critical ZoneAlarm Security Update is now available. This update is required to resolve a problem with the Microsoft Update KB951748, which may cause loss of internet access for ZoneAlarm users on Windows 2000 and XP.

...then offers the usual "Update now" or "Remind me later" options.

So I thought gee, I'd better get this critical security update! So, I opted to update now, which took me to this page...

where I can "try or buy" products from retailers who will pay for the product, via their new TrialPay partnership. Whoa! Apparently there's no obligation, I just have to provide my first name, last name, and email address.

Hmmmmm...... is it just me, or do I smell a fish? A *critical* security update is offered but it requires jumping through a hoop to get it.

Has anyone else seen this? I clicked the "Remind me later" option so I can sleep on this overnight.

that does not sound right at all. There is a critical update for zone alarm which you must do prior to getting the MS update mentioned or you will not be able to connect to the internet, there is a very long thread on here about this issue if you search for it, on it I provided links directly to the zone alarm update for this issue. You should be able to go into your zone alarm to preferences and hit the update button in there to just have it do the update from your zone alarm. Most of the people here were able to do that. I would not do the one you are seeing that sounds like a phishing site. Either go to the direct link I had provided or do the update from in your zone alarm settings with the update button.

no you do not ever have to give anything server rights. the thing you MUST allow is generic 32 process that is what would stop you from being allowed access. You can open your zone alarm and click on the programs and change allowances or non allowances for each item there, if you did not give something permission that you want to have permission you can just click on the item there in the list and change your permissions, this link shows how to do that. Firewalls and ZoneAlarm Guide and Tips Next I would go download and install firefox browser and try using it and see if you can get it to access, right after you install it the zone alarm will ask if you want to give it server rights say no and to remember that, then it will pop up and ask do you want to allow firefox access to the internet say yes and check mark to remember that. That is all you have to do to have it set up for firefox to access the internet, it will not have to ask you again unless you do an update to your firefox program then it will ask again since the program has changed do the exact same steps as before. Firefox this will allow us to see if your problem lies with IE it self or elsewhere, if firefox works fine you at least have a good browser to use in the meantime. Its ba a a ccckkk! It came back a couple days ago, but I haven't had time to do anything about it until today. I checked out every thing I could find that was even remotely connected to ZA Help/ Support forums. Most of what I found had to do with wireless stuff. I have nothing wireless. I found a reference to the new ZA version that was supposed to fix the problem, but no link to where to get it. So Google to the rescue; I googled "latest version of Zone Alarm" and got it at Major Geeks. Version 9.3.014.000, the one Zep mentioned. I downloaded it. No problem, did the restart, and there it was again. I shut down. Still there. At this point I guess I will choose the Internet Zone and hope it goes away. I know RC has said many times, and again in this thread, not to allow the Trusted Zone if you don't know what it is. Any last minute suggestions/advice before I hit the ok button? TIA Sue

Thanks. I went into ZoneAlarm and clicked on the "An update is available" icon, and it took me to the same site! If you go to the URL above, it looks bona fide.

It sure does look like phishing, but apparently it is not. I don't like this at all.

Thanks for the link. But, it still doesn't answer my puzzlement over the means of getting the "critical" update.

We have not downloaded the MS update.

Check your 'Zone Alarm' firewall to see what version you have. Open 'ZA'/Overview tab/Product info. If you have version 7.0.483.000 or later you are safe to download MS KB951748.
If it is an earlier version you may have internet connection problems with KB951748 installed.

As you go through the install process just choose the 'Upgrade' option.

I posted the link to the other thread for you so that you could go in there and get the link to the actual fixed version of zone alarm, from that thread here is the link that you would have found there.
Download and install the latest versions which solve the loss of internet access problem here

under that Recommended actions it has the links to every single version of the zone alarm updates if you use the free that would be the basic firewall.
If you click on that link there it gives you the actual exe to download.

What you were looking at on the site you posted was a trial for the zone alarm security suite NOT the free one, if you just look over to the right on that page there is a button for the basic firewall only UPDATE that is what you would want and when you hit that it gives the exe also.

jenn... I had no problems downloading and installing the free update yesterday. The site has a lot offers various products to try. In fact when you install the upgrade, it may ask you if you want to try the pro version free for 15 days--if I recall correctly! :) Simply say no. Always read through the chart headings and select FREE. This is the site where your link took me:

That is the basic free version. ZA has another completely uncluttered site for the download of the free version. (See below) I did a clean install and have had no problems.
