Is Zone Alarm at it again?

After being away from the computer for several hours, I came back and could not get on any site. Modem light was flashing, but also had the little tray icon telling me there was a local connection problem.

Did a Restart, a ZA message came up saying they had found a new network with IP (long string of numbers) and did I want to add it to the Internet Zone or the Trusted zone.

I chose to let my ISP repair the connection, and I am back on the web, but there is now a small ZA Security Alert box telling me to name this network New Network (optional.) Then it says to share files and assets with network, assign it to the Trusted Zone; there is also the option of choosing the Internet Zone. There is the OK box.

Wherever I go now that message box goes with me.

Is it safe to leave it in the Trusted Zone, and just OK out, or is ZA playing games again?

From what I understand, besides the fact Zone Alarm has always been a Pain to use, install and uninstall.

The New Network issue was Fixed in the Newest Version Of Zone Alarm 9.3.014.000

Zone Alarm has joined the gang that wants to scare you into buying something. I have heard they are pulling back from this but I think the damage to their reputation has been done.

Pinecone, I have known people who just use the built-in Windows firewall, however the downside is it does not monitor outbound traffic. I would like to think that most, but not all, people would agree that a third party firewall that monitors both inbound and outbound traffic is the best way to go. " As Luis stated Zone Alarm will present you with a pop-up window letting you know that an application or program wants to access the internet. It will give you the option of 'Yes' or 'No' and list the application that wants access, such as 'Internet Explorer' or whatever programs you have. There is also a 'More info' button in the alert. If the program is one you recognize and use all the time, you can click 'Yes' and select the box 'Remember this info_______' to keep from being bothered with the same request all the time. If it is a program you don't recognize I would click 'No', but not necessarily select 'Remember this info'. If the request keeps coming up and you don't recognize the program and the 'More info' button does not give you the info you need you may want to 'google' and see what it says. no you do not ever have to give anything server rights. the thing you MUST allow is generic 32 process that is what would stop you from being allowed access. You can open your zone alarm and click on the programs and change allowances or non allowances for each item there, if you did not give something permission that you want to have permission you can just click on the item there in the list and change your permissions, this link shows how to do that. Firewalls and ZoneAlarm Guide and Tips Next I would go download and install firefox browser and try using it and see if you can get it to access, right after you install it the zone alarm will ask if you want to give it server rights say no and to remember that, then it will pop up and ask do you want to allow firefox access to the internet say yes and check mark to remember that. That is all you have to do to have it set up for firefox to access the internet, it will not have to ask you again unless you do an update to your firefox program then it will ask again since the program has changed do the exact same steps as before. Firefox this will allow us to see if your problem lies with IE it self or elsewhere, if firefox works fine you at least have a good browser to use in the meantime. Ta-da!!! I fixed it. For the 31st time (!) I opened ZA and looked through the various screens. I found "Appplication Control" and for Spywareblaster there were red "X's" under "inbound" and "outbound". In this same table SAS (which is updating) had green checks. There was no indication that I could/should click on the "X's" but I thought to do so; a menu appeared which allowed me to change the red "X's" to green checks. After this, when I tried to update Spywareblaster, it worked. Thank you all for considering my problem. Mike_kaiser, you're probably correct, and I'm heavy on the security programs. This computer is about 7 years old and over the years, I've slowly added these programs (and very recently, the router) as they've been recommended here. When one has been recommended I don't recall a corresponding recommendation to get rid of "x". So the list has grown. My computer seems to be running fine and isn't particularly slow so I haven't inquired about what I could remove.

I don't know zone alarms well, nor firefox too well, its not my normal everyday browser. But I do know that firefox will disable any 'Plug-ins, Add-ons, Extensions, etc that are incompatible with it. This does not mean ZoneAlarms is not acting as firewall. It only means that whatever plug in for some kind of added protection beyond the normal firewall rules isn't working. Might possibly be you could uninstall zone alarms completely somehow, and reinstall it completely fresh... hopefully zone alarms is smart enough it would recognize the particular plug in isn't compatible with current firefox versions and not install that plugin, but perhaps maybe a different one. I'm just guessing.. I really don't have much respect for zone alarms from years ago experiences and don't know if they have code writers that would check compatibilities now or not - but for something as popular as firefox they certainly should. Yes, hubby and I have been using ZoneAlarm since dropping our Trend Micro subscription, but are finding ZA increasingly annoying, or should I say, puzzling, to operate, and now we have been getting some of those scare notices, cleverly phrased to make the unwary think at first that just possibly their computer has already been infected with some newly-discovered virus, trojan, whatever. (I forget.)

When I get to Windows 7, I plan to go with the firewall it apparently contains, plus MSE, and drop Zone Alarm.

Vista and W7 have more than an adequate bi-directional firewall so what is the need of a replacement? XP was the last uni-directional firewall that required another firewall.

I've been to Zep's link, any and all other ZA helps I could find, and am still in the same quandary.

I have ZA version 9.2.057.000, and I haven't found any place to update ZA to 9.3.014.000 or anything else.

So I am back to the same question: Is it safe to leave it in the Trusted Zone, and just OK out, or is it best to go with the Internet zone?

I feel like the guy in the TV commercial where the hospital bed is following him around. ;(

I personally would not allow anything in the trusted zone if you are not sure of what it is.
Do this check to see if that number it is showing is your current IP address, I wonder if it somehow is seeing your new connected IP address as a whole new network. An easy way to see your IP address is go to the link below it will display your current IP address see if it matches what is in the ZA question box.

RC, the number there is nothing like the number in the little message box. I thought I probably should not post it.

I'm wondering if any one else has gotten that box, and if not why I have it?

Well, I decided to turn the machine off, and surprise, surprise, the box is gone!!

I had already done a restart and that didn't help, but the Turn Off did it. I checked the IP again and it is the same as the one I had.

Aren't computers fun?

I heard Zone Alarm pulled it because of the number of complaints they were getting.

I allow it in the Trusted Zone. It keeps detecting your wireless as a 'new network.' It is very annoying, but the idea is to inform you that you might be connecting to a public wireless. It doesn't save your connection or 'remember it.'

It does it occasionally on all my computers. I just allow it and it goes away. If you don't allow it, it will block some things as if you were connecting to a public network.

Its ba a a ccckkk!

It came back a couple days ago, but I haven't had time to do anything about it until today. I checked out every thing I could find that was even remotely connected to ZA Help/ Support forums. Most of what I found had to do with wireless stuff. I have nothing wireless. I found a reference to the new ZA version that was supposed to fix the problem, but no link to where to get it.

So Google to the rescue; I googled "latest version of Zone Alarm" and got it at Major Geeks. Version 9.3.014.000, the one Zep mentioned. I downloaded it. No problem, did the restart, and there it was again. I shut down. Still there.

At this point I guess I will choose the Internet Zone and hope it goes away. I know RC has said many times, and again in this thread, not to allow the Trusted Zone if you don't know what it is.

Any last minute suggestions/advice before I hit the ok button?

Yeah, I just switched back to Online Armor free because of ZA's tactics.
